The online racing simulator
I only have Antivir installed, the buildin XP firewall(SP3),a simple firewall in my router, and once in a while i make a search with Ad-Aware. I never have big problems with virus, and my system(s) keep running for years without having to reinstall Windows.
No firewall software here, windows firewall off, AVG Free, but of course firewall activated in router. no incidents for years and years!

edit: ...and spybot once in a while

edit2: ...and give a wide berth to anything that starts with 'Norton-' and other bloated crap!

Screw it - I have enough RAM and cores.

Just installing Avira now - I have Windows Firewall and Windows Defender off. What should I use (for free)?

EDIT - Thanks for reminding me about Norton - will pick Norton 360 v2.0 from work - £59.99 normally, £53.99 with staff discount. BARGAIN!

</sarcasm>
Get NOD 32 internet security. A bit cheaper and uses less resources and a bit more picky about viruses. I am using it for 2 years as of now**renews subscription** none found except that damn starforce shit used by EA

I don't really feel like paying - if I did i'd just go and buy AVG (as it is my Dad has a 3-user license for AVG Pro + Firewall for a year, and if you make it a 5 user one it barely costs any extra).

...shure, people like your dad and however many casual pc users will pay for it, it's 'nice' to know that what i've payed for is telling me i'm ok, and at very worst I could ring someone too, or atleast get instant messenger help from customer support...

but why do you need all that anti-vir crap?

...is it because you know /b/ is out there?

tbh iptables keeps me assured and at worst this local account is only 30 mins old... so who cares if it happens once....

Lock that shit down and move datas around...

OT:

Anyone seen those beagle boards???

thinking of making somethin for my kids, supports HD resolutions , everything and is very mobile...have'nt checked cost yet

My Dad runs an PC business thingy "on the side" and so has to try and find ways of stopping stupid people from being stupid on the computers.

Also, my Mum is the sort of person who thinks smiley central is a good idea.

and you?

Stuck running Windoze applications into oblivion i see

What do you think of Linux?
#34 - Jakg
I think Linux is great as a program, but when you treat it as an OS (i.e. where you use it as a base to run your apps on) it fails miserably.
#35 - CSU1
...apps that came with your mobile phone or software you've payed for/work?

what apps do you need to use that doesn't run in kernel???

I want to run Office (yes, Microsoft Office. A legal copy. And I want to run 2007) - oh no sorry, it's Linux, I have to use OpenOffice.

I want to use Photoshop - oh no wait, it's Linux, I have to use Gimp.

Let me just open Chrom- oh no wait, it's Linux, I have to use Firefox without most of my favourite extensions.

At least I can settle back and play some games on my 1337 PC- oh no wait.

Linux is a great program, but it doesn't let me run MY apps so I find it pretty useless.

For it's use Linux is very good. And no Jack, it's not a program, but an OS.
I agree that as a desktop OS for the masses it's not there yet, but still, you can accomplish most of the same things there as you can in Windows. It's true strength however is on the server side. And there's a good chance that one of your digital devices, or one that you buy in the future has Linux in it.

If it hadn't been for LFS, I would be perfectly fine with Linux as my primary OS.

I shall give you one word: WINE.

And "without most of your favourite extensions"? Care to list any Windows-only Firefox extensions that you use?

Chrome is working via cxChromium, also.

Before you start bashing Linux for not working, do some reading up
#39 - Jakg
WINE always seemed a bit dodgy for me - maybe I was wrong.

Still - Can I run the software *I* want to run such as Office, Photoshop MPE etc?
Hardware firewall in my router and AVG.

I also have Ad-aware and Spybot S&D which I'll run every few months.
