I would assume that the reason behind thinking it was mk3 was that you maybe forgot the mk1 and mk2, I wouldn't be surprised if you haven't heard about those, because you're from USA.
They were the best Escorts, RWD, made from '65 to '80. MK3 was the first FWD one. mk1 with mk2 RS2000 behind it, the mk2 has x-pack bodykit and RS2000 double-lamp front. mk2 with wide rally arches. mk3 RS Turbo. mk4 RS Turbo.
And finally the mk5 RS Cosworth, what was based on the older Sierra Cosworth platform. Even it's engine was longitudinally positioned, different from the FWD Escos. I also want to show you a picture of the earlier 3dr Cosworth Sierra, pretty similar to what I own, just not a real Cossy that is. All those Cossies were basically the same under the hood, just with different looking body and the mk2 Sierra had also 4wd version and the Cossie Escort was only available as 4wd. Cossie Escos also had a later T25, model, basically the same car, but with different turbo and other tiny differences. There is also mk6 Escy, but it didn't have a Cossie version. Both mk5 and mk6 had a RS2000 version tho, N/A engine with around 150bhp, FWD but also more rare 4wd versions exist, engine was diagonally positioned and it was based on the normal Escort platform.
Plus there is also those weird looking US version, but I dunno anything about them.
Rare cos they are rusting away in someones backyard just like that Fiat you dug up in YOUR back yard. Mk1 GTI isn't even Turbocharged and could still keep up with, if not better a XR3i.
They are rare because they didn't make them so much. the mk4 RST S2 is more popular. ALL old cars rust. I wouldn't say that as an excuse of selecting Golf over Escort, because those old Golfs rust very badly too. BTW I can't really tell what you are saying because of your writing style, but XR3i and RST are completely different cars, XR3i is N/A.
BTW you can get pretty good bhp out of those 1600 CVH turbo engines. Actually too much for FWD car anyway.
Oh BTW mk1 GTi is a one second slower 0-100 km/h than RST s1.
That's a Fiesta, probably mk2. Again dunno what you are saying here? Bet that from crash like that the Golf wouldn't being survived that better.
The Golf is a better car than any Escort, the guy before was saying he liked Volkswagens AND Ford. The fact of the matter is. 0-100kph the RST Escort is turbocharged and is only 1second faster. That's poor. Sure the difference between N/A Petrol and Turbo-Petrol engines aren't as severe as N/A Diesel and Turbo Diesel engines but it should be more than 1second over 60mph, that is more than enough time for the Turbo to kick in. But having said that, Ford don't really know what a turbo is, the Transit van's are supposed to be TDi but only act like an N/A Diesel.
Not much point arguing with BlueFlame, he is under the impression a MK1 Golf would wipe the floor with anything. Then again all he's driven are some landys and a mk3 golf or 2. Great argument there.
Why is it that every month my Ford mag is filled with turboed cars producing 700bhp+ in most issues. I guess Ford really don't know about turboed engines. Then again VW produced the MIND BLOWING engines such as the 2.0 8v in the mk3 producing a, frankly huge, 114bhp. Awesome.
BlueFlame do you actually realize that one second difference on 0-100 acceleration is huge? It feels and is a lot faster.
IE. Car what does 0-100 in 9 seconds, it wheels solid good for every day use, but you don't really feel the seat in your back. But a car what does it in 8 seconds, seriously feels faster, sporty and you can feel your back getting pushed to the seat a bit.
And doing an argument like "Golf is better than Escort" is just stupid. It's just what the person likes. It's like saying "meatballs are better than stakes, because I like them more".
For me, I just don't like Golf's that much, or any other VAG products either.
Yea I know, but well I can't resist it sometimes. BTW if he really has just driven a normal mk2 or mk3 I don't understand how he can like them so much. My friend had a normal, stock mk2 Golf and it was just a horrible car, very soft.
No point in arguing with blueflame, he hates fords, we hate him...everyone loves cake.
Imo, with the golf GTi and the Escort RST, you get the best of both worlds. GTi has light nimble handling, Escort has power and great interiors.
What blueflame did'nt mention is that since the mk1, VW lost the plot with the GTi and slowly made worse and worse Golf GTi's, and now have the fat bloated one we got now.
Ford had a little trouble with their turbo diesels until recently, but their new twin turbo system is much better. More of a bi turbo setup I think, runs in stages, good for a very heavy truck.
But Ford has a past with turbo's tho, perhaps not overseas, or maybe so, I wouldn't know, but the Turbo Coupe Thunderbirds were great cars. Also the Turbo Mustangs, same engine, 2.3L Turbo, they pulled as good as the H.O. 5.0L Stangs and Birds, just add a big turbo kit, and a few supporting modds, and easy 400whp, which was a lot back in the 80's, early 90's.
If you had told someone 5 years ago that a car like that was being put into production they would have had an incident in their underwear. But because everyday cars now have concept car styling it doesn't stand out as much. I would still consider having intercourse with those sport versions, it would probably give birth to a VW Beetle.
