Quote from arco :Wouldn't surprise me if they know each other then. Especially if your uncle is also flying online on Vatsim.

I fly and control on VATSIM
I went as far as downloading everything needed for VATSIM. I'm still weirded out about talking on voicecoms. Besides that, when I'm on the computer, my daughters are asleep and the computer is in the basement below their bedrooms with virtually no sound insulation between me and their rooms other than the wood floor above.

Headset and communicating with text commands kinda works.
What does VATSIM do? Is it an automatic voice-regognition system that can be used to control your own airplane, or do you use it to communicate with other pilots/towers?

That. There are folks working the towers directing traffic and others piloting following the dictated traffic, landing, and takeoff patterns for their flights.

I think my problem would mainly be trying to follow the taxi directives around the airports. I have trouble making out the signs for the taxi ways. I would like to jump into a session just to observe sometime.
I love pottering about in my little Cessna on FSX, cant really admire the scenery since i havent really got the funds to spend on scenery

Can any of you fellow 'simmers reccomend any free aircraft/scenery addons please ?

Thanks,
Sarge.

Good idea. You can learn a lot from just observing and listening to whats going on. Most of the die hard simmers do have airport and landing/takeoff maps though, which they use when planning their flights according to what kind of weather/winds it is.

Controller A loggs on as Schipol Tower to a server that supports high work-loads and voice comms..

Pilot A loggs on to this server also and goes to Schipol.

Controller A sees the pilot.

Pilot A send a flight plan

Controller A gets his clearence ready.

Pilot A calls for clearence.

Etc, then you have push back and engine startup, taxiing, taking off. You could get more complex when you add Controller B covering Approach or Radar; or even 'CTR' Control in the UK or Center in the US.

Btw, you can communicate to these controllers via text and voice.. they are real people

Sarge - head to; www.avsim.net <-- all you need for free.

For the lad who said they would get lost due to the taxiways etc; you get something called Charts!

that's why you should go download some charts, airport chart often come with one with every taxiway marked.

Ok, ok, I get it! I'll go download some charts, get off my back already....

And to SCORacer, me ain't no lad....
Quote from SCORacer :Thanks Sam

In terms of FSX and addons its rubbish. I can rull it on full capacity graphics etc and still get 40-50 fps.

I prefer FS9 due to the high volume of addons and the still yet demanding popularity over FSX.

how does online work for fs9 now? i stoped playing a long time ago but want to get back into it now that i have a slightly better computer and good internet. the last time i played was before zone stoped their service.

I cant recommend any free scenery for FSX i'm afraid, as i went back to FS9 and haven't kept up with FSX scenery development.

If you do find some money for some payware addons (or find 'other methods' of obtaining the software) I would highly recommend You get the Orbx Australian scenery here http://fullterrain.com/ It's stunning. (FS9 users should check out VOZ, a freeware Australia addon...its fantastic. Google it)

A great GA plane worth buying for FSX is The Dornier DO-27 (http://www.flight1.com/products.asp?product=DO-27) My favorite plane for FS9. Ideal for those aussie bush strips.
Only just noticed this thread and i've not read it all, and don't know if this has already been mentioned. But if anyone's looking for new scenery files then there's only one thing i'd recommend, and that's Tileproxy. As far as i know there's versions for both FSX and FS9. Not used it myself for sometime, and Google Maps and MS Virtual Earth had tried to put a block on the amount of tiles you could download in a certain period of time. But if you find an area of top quality maps then it's simply unbeatable for scenery. Give me a few mins and i'll try to find some vids.

Heres one for starters http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v= ... -9GVI&feature=related and thats with crappy quality Youtube
Heres some screenies http://forums.avsim.net/dcboar ... c_id=251&mesg_id=1363
Some more http://edtruthan.com/tileproxy/keys/floridakeys.htm
Another vid, but crappy Youtube again http://www.online-video.net/vi ... -trackir-alternative.html

There's a fantastic high quality vid somewhere on the net of a guy flying around the Canary Islands and The Grand Canyon, but i'm not having much luck finding it...
But here's some screenies from it http://edtruthan.com/tileproxy/
Just noticed the vid is in he link at the top of the page
