'RAM' was a bad choice of name?
Is it just in Ireland or do people referrer to hard disk space as memory in other places?

My gran for example would say "oh, dear! I need to save this to my memory card for later".
"How much memory does it have?" is a question that is asked Knowing that this person does not understand the workings of random access memory...

My point is; to call it Random Access Memory is wrong and should be called Random Access Capacity because most people save things to memory not hard disks. Memory should have been the name for hard disks and capacity the name for ram.

E;

should of added a poll(j/k lol...)
Hard disk space is memory availible which is 'hard'. I.E it won't dissappear unless you delete it, and even then traces remain.

It's called Random Access Memory because it's access to it is as it says. Random. It loads things when it needs to, drops them when it needs to, and nothing stays.

Capacity by definition is how much something holds, or can be contained (in this context) so it would not make sense.

YOU do not make sense my friend.

Computers were never designed for idiots to use - making stuff simpler just makes it harder to diagnose when you have to ask someone else the questions.

What you think of my question though...it's good point...

I think that it's a little late to start renaming components tbh.

That made me lol.

...i know, simple idea, but true imo.
Well, I do agree that it is a bit confusing, but the reason behind it makes sense. Both of them are forms of memory, but if you are assigning two different words, it DOES make sense to label the hard drive as 'storage' and the RAM as 'memory.'

HDD: Permanent Storage
RAM: Temporary Memory

Its funny when you overhear (as I did at work the other day) two people discussing which PC to buy and deciding which was 'better' purely on the size of the HD, and when I offer my advice are utterly unable to grasp that the one I showed them with a smaller HD is actually a lot more powerful.

On topic, 'memory' is a perfectly appropriate term. If people are naming things wrong, educate the people, don't redefine the word.
it doesn't matter what word is being used to mean what, as long as everyone is clear on the definition.

Also, tell people that if you want to get accurate about something you need to learn the terminology.
