Ok. Before i start. Yes ive used the search button with no results. I have problems with lag. And ive looked on google and tried some of ther solutions. They helped a bit but thers still lag. Ive tried changing router settings for security from low to none. Ive port forwarded xbox live thinking it might make a little diffrence. So can somebody tell me how to fix this lag. I dont promise this will be my last thread but if i fix this i wont need help with much anymore. Sorry im a noob and need a bit of help. Thanks-
Firstly I'd sugget you put your security back on. I highly doubt that normal WEP or WPA-PSK security will affect connection speed. Personally, I've had no problems using 128bit encryption on either of those. Try a more complicated password incase anyone has guessed it and is leeching from you.
Are you playing LFS with XBL on? That would be the first and most painfully logical starting point. Try disconnecting your Xbox from the connection?
If you play alot on XBL, maybe you are over your monthly download limit or fair usage policy, capping your speeds.
Other than that, normal anti virus scans, spyware and the like.
Failing all the above, call your net provider and enquire about any engineering work that could be affecting connection speed.
i have ports forwarded for xbl to help fix lag on that which it did. And no im not playing on xbl while playing lfs. And i'll go and turn it on and i have my connection locked so that no one can leech off of my connection.
Most probably you already did that, but have you checked how fast you connect to the net? What's your actual (not promised) upload speed?
Might be that your WLAN has trouble in the room you are. I have a room in our house, where I have trouble getting WLAN working fast enough, meaning less than 10% of the normal speed I have in other rooms of the house. Strangely this is problem changes over time, so sometimes I have 30% of the speed and then it drops again and recovers within minutes.
It's 1mb, from seeing everyone elses in America, it looks painfully slow.
However that's a very simular speed to me, and I'm having no problems.
However that is probbably because I'm in the UK, and the majority of the servers are either in the UK or that server super-continent we call Holland.
It could be that you're on a faster connection (say, 16mb, as most American ISPs give good download speeds compared to Europe), but as I said before because of the amount of time you may spend downloading/playing on XBL you tripped your download limit and are suffering poor speeds and a low priority on your pipe.
Still, ring your ISP provider and enquire about speeds and any download limits, and if they have some ask if you've exceeded them.
Ya i dont know how many new LFS downloads ive did lol. Im goiing in and gettin my computer cleared of all viruses and delete all files i dont need cause i think my virus protection isnt working good enough. Anyways thanks for the help =)
Whoa, that is a lot of ping... I only get 23ms and have a connection speed barely faster than yours. One possibility is that your ISP's network is pretty bad. Other possibilities include people sapping your bandwith (i.e: neighbors leeching your Internet, siblings or parents using another computer connected to the internet, etc.) Check for other things in your computer that require an internet connection like instant messengers and other programs and shut them down.
Remember that if your computer sends that info to the host quickly but the host can't send it back quickly, then you get high latency. If your computer can't send info to the host quickly, then you would also get high latency because the host recieved that info slowly and now has to send it back to you.
I'm probably going to be wrong somewhere here so don't kill me for being wrong.
Indeed. Above a certain point (and that's a very low point in reality) download and upload bandwidth become irrelevant to your connection lag. The problem here appears to be a massively high ping. If you're pinging 230 ms to a server only ~150 miles from you there is something seriously wrong. If you understand your network setup can you please provide us with as full an explanation as you can as to its architecture (include a diagram too, everyone loves a diagram...).
Also, run a couple of pings and traceroutes from your PC to well known sites to check out how your ping is there. To run a ping, press Windows+R, type cmd and hit enter. Then type in ping www.google.com and hit enter. Copy the output you see (right click, click on Mark, highlight the full output and hit enter) in a post here so we can see. An example output would be the following (for me):
Reply from 66.102.9.147: bytes=32 time=56ms TTL=243
Reply from 66.102.9.147: bytes=32 time=54ms TTL=243
Reply from 66.102.9.147: bytes=32 time=55ms TTL=243
Reply from 66.102.9.147: bytes=32 time=53ms TTL=243

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

To run a traceroute, leave the command window open from the ping (the one you opened with the Windows+R and typing cmd) and type in tracert www.google.com. It will produce a lot of output, detailing each step in the path from your computer to the server where google's site is hosted. Again, copy the output and post it here. A sample output would be this:
