Ideas for a program
I am really bored, and have nothing to do. So I decided that I'm going to make some sort of software. I don't yet know what I'm going to make though. It will most likely be written in Java. Does anyone have any ideas of what kind of program I should make? I do not want to make a game. I want to make some sort of software that is actually useful. So does anyone have any ideas of what I can do to cure my boredom? And, I don't want to write an insim application by the way.
U could try to make LFS Server program, there was one program ... Dont remember the name. Program like, that u can join servers on desktop

And a very useful thing would be, that ...
Mouse steering is already in. Why not making a acceleration and braking system on mouse. Saw 1 game with that system. In center of screen, nothing happens. If u move up, it will accelerate. Down is brake, and steering is like it is.

Second is worth to try, i gave this idea for Victor too. It could be in new LFS as as chooseable system.

I think your talking about Racer good (kinda) free (better) game. But I could not quite get to grips with the Steering and Brake + Accelerator going though one what feels like the same axis. I know the Steering is by X, and Brake and Accelerator is from the Y axis but really it terrible you only have half an axis to use for your Accelerator, and the slightest movement in the Y direction will mess with your steering. I feel that the Mouse1 for Accelarator and Mouse2 for Breaking is much better, then Mouse3 for Clutch and MouseWheelUp for Shifting up then MouseWheelDown for Shifting down just works! One hand racing, so your other hand is free to do anything else! Like drinking (Water / Soda) and driving, great for long events!
A program that sends/receives LFS-data to another pc in a lan network, so that I can have a rearview in realtime through a second pc.
If a had a program that can do that I'm planning to use a second pc and a little monitor as a rearview mirror.
I hope you understand what I mean.
You could make me some software that can accept large (15MB) CSV files, allow any two (or three) columns to be selected by column header name, and plot them in a graph with custom axis and labelling (3D graphs with three columns).

Yes, Excel does this, but it's a chore to set up and it doesn't work with large files as Excel complains.

That'll keep you busy and quiet
edit: irrelevant.

You could try to write a program that generates random autocross layouts for LFS based on specified criteria (LFS track, length, track width, twistiness, surfaces).

Generating rally pacenotes for these layouts and a program that reads them while a user drives (this would require InSim, however) could be next steps.

A programme that downloads porn for me at timed intervals
you can make a program thats will make random pictures of milka cows, and then it makes a movie of them...

its called matlab
Pfff, I don't have Matlab (though that's not to say it's difficult to get hold of a copy). I also developed an allergy to it at Uni, as it's hardly 'user friendly'
Quote from DarkTimes :You can write a GUI program that builds and executes Django commands for me. It would have a little drop-down box with items like 'syncsb', 'validate', 'startapp', 'shell', and a textbox that allows you to specify arguments. Then when you click a button it will make a command like
python manage.py startapp blog

and execute it on the command line. The output from the command line, stdout and stderr, should be redirected and printed in a window inside the program itself, so the actual shell window should never open. It would also need to allow you to specify the working directory to carry out the command in.

I think I might give that a try.

Don't get me started on MATLAB...

clearly you have never used proper languages
matlab is easy and extremely well documented

more important as for your i suppose telemetry... theres nothing that makes ploting as easy and pretty as matlab
Grudgingly looks for somewhere to... acquire... it.

Edit: It's fecking huge! I'll struggle on as I am methinks.
Quote from DarkTimes :Cool.

Send a shout if you need any help with how the commands should work in practise. I've been thinking about such a program for weeks, I have a lot of ideas. Sadly WotLK stole all my free time.

I have part of the GUI done, and the running command silently and putting the output in a nice window. All I have to to is figure out the rest. Im going to make the other half of the GUI, and post a screenshot of it to see if it's what you were thinking of. Should only take me a few minutes to add that, a drop down box and text box.

I Updated the GUI. Is this what you want? I figured I'd make a basic GUI and show you a screenshot before actually taking the time to write the code for all the action listeners. I'm sorry about double posting, but firefox decided to mess up again and the post edit feature doesn't work when firefox acts up on me.

dont forget that it also comes with anything you could ask for to analyze the data

Quote from DarkTimes :Only other thing of note is that the textbox that the stdout is printed in needs to allow you to freely copy the text. This is because some Django commands only print out the SQL that you need to run on the DB, so its really useful to be able to just copy and paste that into the database app, instead of having to transcribe it.

I didn't have any time to work on this program today, because after I got home from school I had to run out and get a voltage regulator and 9V battery for a little electronics project that I am making for school. But, yes, text can be copied from the output. As for the path/working directory, I will add a textbox for that and try to get it working at some point when I have spare time.

No, PHP is really the only well documented Language out there. There is a central resource, where all information can be found. All of the other langues really lack this (Althought, you know I would LOVE to be proved wrong, but if you do, share with links to these so called resources.) Oh, and I'll add Python to the list as well, that's pretty well documented in a single location.

But, anyway, I digress.
