Not sure if this has been posted here before.

After a race at South City I discovered a barrier which became invisible when I got close to it. The collision worked properly though.

Just came here to say thanks for the much needed progress report!
I wish they were more frequent but Im not really in the position to complain nor criticize.

Keep up the good work and Merry Christmas!

The brakes (at least on default setups) are shit. Other than that it would be an awesome car to race.

@Inouva

Actually, stealing any internet account can be amazingly simple. For example, if you have a dead (deleted, not used etc.) e-mail account which is still related to some of your other accounts you might have forgotten. All one needs to do is claim that e-mail account. It would then be pretty easy to find hints about your other accounts (usernames, possible passwords etc.) which ARE active.

And thats pretty much the easiest way to do it... hackers are usually much smarter than that though.

Remember kids, anonymity=/=safety!

You guys could help by mentioning the fact that there is no S3 content right now.

Youre not being clever nor funny. If you dont have anything useful to say then keep it to yourself.

I have to somewhat agree with the main topic.

Im a fairly slow driver I admit but I pay a lot of attention on the track and driver as cleanly and consistently as I can. Thanks to that I have won a few races which involved people who are a lot faster than me.

But its really annoying when some push too hard to gain a place or try to race you in places where its a bit inappropriate. Its not even because they dont pay attention where you are but because they just take stupid risks. Racers need to be fast AND patient. You cant win if youre stuck in the gravel.

Also, most drivers should know by now that the first corner is extremely crowded and that they should start braking a bit earlier when they are behind someone. So, why dont they? The distance signs are beside the tracks for a reason.

Quote from Jos[NL] :Hi , when go get the new version lfs out ?
I have a few askst :
  1. I have a 3 weeks ago buy a lfs s1&s2 license but now is me told that s3 coming out , What are the prices for s3 ? Can you upgrade from s2 to s3 ?
  2. What are the new cars & tracks ?
  3. Is it word to buy ?

Well, S3 hasnt been announced officially AFAIK and no solid info on it has been released.

1)Most are guessing that it will be a similar to the upgrade from S1 to S2 (which is like 12 pounds?).

2)Rockingham will probably be one... no cars nor other tracks have been announced for S3.

3)Dont know.

Stop being such douches... all youre doing is pushing possible customers away.

Quote from logitekg25 :the scientific part intrests me a little too, but i want to know how exactly he codes this, i am a basic coder, that wants to learn, too bad i cant really relate c++ to visual basic

The logic behind a program doesnt change much but the syntax is a bitch.

I should put some more effort into studying it as well.

I dont understand the stiff opposition for the idea.

Nobody HAS to write news every day but were talking about slient periods which last several months. Suggesting people to check Scawens posts in this forums is fairly counterintuitive also. Finding something refering to the current state of development from his posts isnt exactly easy if you just want to "check whats new" for a couple of minutes (because most of his posts are related to bugfixing and sometimes tend to be heavy on technical jargon which the majority of users wont understand).

"LOL FAIL" doesnt help either because some people really are in the black when it comes to news in LFS development (I mean, people had to ASK for a news update on the front page of lfs.net).

I think an official blog which occasionally mentions what the devs are doing (is Eric even alive? what is Victor doing?) or perhaps discusses how a game is developed in general and what problems occur or may occur (the debates about physics and whatnot are quite interesting in this forum). Theres no need to spend a whole day on the blog... even occasional 15 minutes of the devs time would be plenty.

Black Mesa Source has a twitter channel for example... granted they do post some old material (like videos of earlier builds of effects and guns)... but you get an insight into the development and know that they are still busy.

Personally, Im pretty sure the development HAS stopped... because its holiday time... almost nobody works during that time.

Things should start looking better a few months into the next year though (I hope).

@Ivo Georgiev - The circumstances were a bit different. The small developing team had to cope with almost endless stream of new technology. Its hard to develop something AND make it compatible with new hardware every few months (LFS developers dont have to deal with that).

Also, from what I have gathered, creating a fully working OS (even on a solid basis) is a bit more difficult than making a game and some maps every few years (just look at the development of ReactOS).

Personally, I was pretty certain that there wont be ANY new patches coming in near time (Id even assume the nearest 3 months considering the amount of stuff to be done) when I read Scawens post.

Funnily enough... I do the same thing when I have no access to the internet.

Its a bit annoying that the AI doesnt know how to restart an engine nor stop properly if someone is right ahead of them.

I think its more to do with the number of particles than their longetivity.

Just as people can overkill a map with barriers/cones/etc. they can abuse particles. With that said, its definitely an interesting idea. What makes you so sure that this will work and that people arent going to be able to circumvent the "hiding smoke" bit though?

Quote :The biggest issue is once an incompatible patch happens (either with or after an upgrade to the graphics engine), the older versions become obsolete and players with low spec systems can essentially no longer player LFS as it was intended (i.e. online). Now eventually this is inevitable, so there will come a point where you have to drop support for these lowest spec machines, but you have to do it when the proportion of your userbase is effected is very small.

Maybe with Windows 7 proving popular, XP machines will start to reduce in significance much more quickly, meaning it would be sensible to switch to the latest DX version in maybe just a couple of years.

But isnt that the whole reason why you can change settings in menus?
If I remember correctly you could revert to Dx7 in Call of Duty 2. Theres no reason why we shouldnt be able to do that in future releases.

I think LFS looks fairly OK even by todays standards though (only thing letting it down right now are environment shadows). Its not Crysis but it doesnt make you want to gouge your eyes out either. Its a good sweetspot between eyecandy and performance. The fact that its one of the few games that manages to run on my Radeon 7000 is testament to that.

To be honest, I cant even be fussed about the suspension setups, I usually try someone elses and see if it fits me.

Whats the point in messing with every bloody detail when you could easily be spending that time racing (which is essentially what I want to do in the first place).

Actually, it felt more like Racer. The handling was a bit smoother perhaps but in general very similar behaviour.

All the cars also seemed awfully overpowered. But I guess thats the whole point of drifting.

Quote :What if AI uses apexes instead of lines. That way it will be more flexible.
It will calculate the line real-time using the apex. It will get braver and braver, and having later braking points. It can also learn where to place the apex to get the ideal line. It can also learn better throttle control, better/later braking.

The problem is that sometimes hitting the apex is much slower compared to another line. Plus, youd have to define what an apex is. Youd also have to find the perfect turn in for it to work properly.

Well, LFS is about providing as realistic racing AND driving experience as possible. ESP is definitely part of the experience (as is ABS).

I wouldnt say no to a feature which I could turn off at any moment if I felt like it.

Quote :It has, racers would not want to wreck their aerodynamics, neither would drifters.

As far as I know, racers also prefer not to crash...

IF dynamic weather/day-night cycle etc. ever becomes a reality then Im sure it would be the most sensible solution.
