When looking far ahead you can't always tell which way the cones are pointing ... at least I can't. But I might just be blind ... lol. And by room for error I mean that a gate has a defined inside and outside, where an open slalom does not. This allows for different lines .. some good and some bad.

I can see what you're saying about those being slaloms, but I was just thinking something more open ... more room for error without it being obvious.

And the the thing I had issues with is that I look ahead as far as possible. So, I look ahead and just see a row of cones with a vertical thing out to the side, only to find that the vertical thing is the post and not a cone. I just don't see that as difficulty ... I see it being confusing. But, we've disagreed before, right? =)

I'll plan to hop on next weekend too. Thanks for hosting these.

I took this layout for a spin ... my first time. I was expecting something a little different, but I did enjoy it. My friend Vince and I spent a good amount of time trying to get clean laps ... we were never successful. lol.

I had issues seeing a couple of the gates ... one was in a shadow and some of the others had red posts on the opposite sides from the actual gate. I found this confusing as the spacing was close to the gate spacing and I found myself aiming for the wrong place in a few spots.

I think it would have been cool to throw in a slalom or 2 on the course, but that's just me. I had a blast driving it.

I hope you can make an event soon. It's loads of fun.

Autocross is unique because you don't have loads of time to scout and learn the track. In real competition, it's 3 runs and done. If you can't make a quick time or keep hitting cones, you're out ... the next fastest or the cleanest driver takes the win.

Getting to the skill level that enables you to excel in this arena is extremely difficult, and very rewarding.

We're still working on rule sets for seasonal autocross competition, but I wanted to let you guys know about the site before the full release on LFSForum.

http://www.virtualautocross.com/

You can download lots of layouts from the forum and compete in our events (usually weekly). Seasonal competition is in the works, with classes to mimic the SCCA Solo rules. It will be a blast! We are working with Race2Play on integrating the rule set needed for this.

There is also a detailed course building tutorial and a tips and tricks thread to help you build your own autocross courses.

Most all of our members are real autocrossers, so the autocross "vibe" is all over our events and the forum. If you've ever attended an autocross, you'll know what I mean ... everyone is really friendly and eager to help when needed.

Come over and check us out if you are interested. Thanks.

Virtual Autocross (VAX) and Race2Play are working together to host autocross events using LFS. We're running an all day challenge today for the fastest time in the MRT5 on one of our courses. The server is open from 8:00 am CST till midnight. Hop in whenever and run for as long as you like.

You can get more info at www.virtualautocross.com. Come by and have some fun for a few minutes.

We're also working on season points championships and classed competition, just like SCCA SoloII competition. When we get that rolling, I'll put the info out here and get a sub-forum.

Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks for the reply ... yes, I know that these needs are rather specific.

As far as the start queue ... I meant a way for multiple drivers to basically "get in line" to race. So, say 5 drivers want to start, they would be queued and they would pop on to the start once the previous driver is that 25-30 seconds in to their run. This feature would help with confusion at the start line and should also get rid of the "car-in-car" bug.

And, as far as the auto-spectate, that's because we only have 3 or 4 cars on course at a time. We don't want any trouble from people finishing and deciding to loop around to run again in the middle of someone else's run. Since their race is technically finished, doing this would not result in a wrong way kick.

Again, thanks for the responses and answers to my questions. This info will really help us with developing a server for our needs.

I really like the features of AIRIO, and I'm wondering if it would work for a server we're working on.

We are looking to set up seasonal autocross competitions and have some specific needs.

1) Mostly locked setups for stock classes - only a few values can be modified
2) Limited passes on an autocross layout - "3 runs and done" - competitors cannot change name/car and race again after their 3 timed runs, but can spectate.
3) Auto points tracking based on class - Class could be in the driver name ... ASP-M.Williams maybe
4) Time based auto spectate drivers after each run - Maybe 5 seconds after they cross finish
5) Race join timer based on previous car's time on course - next car can join race 25 seconds after previous car starts. The standard autocross start timer can stay at 3-5 seconds.
6) Start queue with configurable timer - This would be spectacular!

If you could, let me know if this would be possible with AIRIO. I'm not familiar with the coding behind these apps, but we are working with someone who is. Thanks!

I don't really want to hop in to the fray here, but there is more to drags than just flooring the throttle and keeping the car straight.

Reaction time is something that hasn't been mentioned at all ... if you think losing .1 on a 1:30 road course is notable, being .001 slow off the tree can make or break a drag race.

Also, with circuit racing, you generally have a few laps to make up for any minor mistakes ... you lose a position you have a chance to gain it back. With drags, you slip up the slightest bit you lose.

I compete locally in bracket competition every so often and it's not the most difficult thing in the world as I only run in the high 11 sec range. But, I have lost in the finals by .008 (as I recall) because of my RT off the tree.

So, i guess I'm saying that it's not easy ... but it's not like circuit racing at all. Every millisecond counts and you only get one shot.

But, like others have said ... its apples and tangelos.

Thanks for the solution Illusion. Sadly, I have no idea how to start a code like that.

It seems like it would be fairly easy to address in a patch ... maybe put a 2 or 3 sec delay on joins to check requests, then queue them. I'm not a developer though.

Jedi is referring to a Pro Solo style setup for a course. Pro Solo events run 2 cars head to head on mirrored tracks with a drag style start. This is why the "tree" is needed.

For now, I'd be happy with just the line level start as mentioned in the big list in the suggestions forum and a grid area. However, if we get the airport area, that would likely be big enough for a Pro Solo layout.

LFS already has a tree in the code for drag events ... it would just need to be merged with the autocross layout and scoring system for this to work ... and we'd need a venue. It's a sweet idea though!

I also mentioned the scoring aspect in another thread ... only upright cones should count against you. Like Jedi said, it's kind of a shame that the rules are close, but far enough away to be a turn off at times.

Autocross Bug: 2 cars start at once
TouringBubble

I've been setting up and racing SCCA styled Solo courses in the Autocross arena and have found a bug. It's apparently possible for 2 cars to spawn on the start line at once while in a multiplayer race.

The cars spawn in one another at the start line. If one tries to move they both shoot away from each other and cause serious crashes.

When playing online, I was able to repeat this issue 4 or 5 times in a row. I assume it is caused by server latency and the app not knowing someone has already started and then allowing multiple starts in this latency period.

BEER, the courses use SCCA Solo II setup practices. If the direction isn't marked, the obstacle is "optional." this means that you can enter on either side of the cone/wall, but you still have to slalom the cones/walls.

I've added more cones than we normally would on a real course to help substitute for the lack of depth and peripheral vision.

I'm glad you like the course and I hope you can make the event Sunday.

NO LONGER A FREE DRIVER

What kind of team are you looking for? Race/AutoCross
Age: 26
Country: United States
Preferred Car/Track: My current favorite is the FXR, but I have a bit of experience with the XFG/XRG from playing on the Demo servers when I was S1 only. I use all cars in autocross events.
Average Laptime on Car/Track: Around 3-5 seconds off WR once I learn a track.
How Active Are You? I average about 10 hours a week, but sometimes play long stints on weekends.
Time Zone: GMT -5 (US Central)
Controller: Logitech Momo Race

I'm fairly new to sim racing and purchased my setup to work on skills for real-life autocross and track events. I split my time between LFS and a few other sims. I have built a few SCCA styled autocross tracks (in my sig) that my local SCCA region guys really enjoy.

I can be fairly quick on most tracks alone, but I really need more wheel-to-wheel experience with people who can tolerate my learning experience.

I also believe in building my own setups and constantly tweak cars after every race. This is another learning experience for me. I know lots about real-world car setup, but translating theory in to results is a different story ... lol.

I'd like to join a team with members that can help me build my skills, and that will take on new members that I can help in the future. I want to race, learn and teach. Who can help me?

Thanks for the input. I'm glad you like it.

I'm considering another sponsor decal or graphic on the rear quarter and maybe something along the aero along the bottom of the door and that should take care of the sides. Maybe some more battle wounds, but that's it. Then, it's on to the rest ...
