Just popped in to see if there was any news and see that nothing has changed.
Every November/December people seem to expect something new to come out, as though Christmas is what Scawen is waiting for...
I doubt the devs care less about giving players a seasonal update. They seem to have an "it's done, when it's done" approach, which is to be respected, but is a crap way to treat players and won't ever make LFS the success it might otherwise be, if they had released regularly and used beta/test patches to try out new ideas (not just netcode refinements).
Will check back next year, but tbh just expect the continued decay of a once decent racer. Seems the competition has eaten LFS' breakfast and taken the community with it...
Agreed, why would VW pay LFS dev team to promote their 2 year old car in a game where the active users are on the decline and also why would Rockingham pay to be in such a fringe project?
You wouldn't buy a road car based on how well it drove in a track racing computer game and likewise I wouldn't drive the 45 miles from my home to Rockingham for a track day because I'd just driven a 3 year old BMW F1 car around it in LFS. There's very little commercial reason for either party to think LFS will help boost their profitability or profile.
The more you tell people about an update, the more they want it. The longer before the launch you tell them, the longer they have to build up their expectations; so much so, that now everyone is thinking that they must be working on something more than just the Scirocco.
I was thinking yesterday when the servers were being upgraded, what will we all do when the scirocco is launched?
I for one don't want to be left in limbo, with no expected content to avidly wait for, but I think I've found the solution... Ferrari Challenge on the PS3, this too had upcoming content, that they then failed to deliver - there's also a similar lack of updates from the dev team.
So when this is all over, if anyone is left with the nagging feeling that their life has no meaning or direction now that there's no LFS thread to complain about missing content on, head over to the Eutechnyx forum and create yourself an account
No sign of an update makes it very difficult to know what's happening.
I appreciate that LFS is developed by a very small team of people, but the glacial rate of progress and the lack of regular updates on their progress means it's difficult to understand what, if anything, is happening.
I know a lot of people want the Scirocco, but this is probably due to boredom of the exisiting content. If they'd promised a Toyota iQ and failed to deliver it I'm sure people would still have been miffed about it...
Would be good to get some new content to reinvigorate people's appetite for what is now looking a very old game.
Does seem a shame that they can't just release it in it's current state. They seemed happy enough with it to have it at Liepzig...
I thought that the whole point of LFS was that none of it was quite ready yet, that's was the full version of S3 will be right? There are so many areas where LFS could still be improved, why not release one more thing that's not quite as good as it could be.
I think it'd stop a lot of the moaning and give the team time to work on a fully finished model in peace.
I don't know why I am surprised, but it's always the same old threads on these forums. I've taken a long break from LFS and only visit the forums occasionally, but nothing here has changed, same people, same viewpoints, same arguments.
That the website hasn't been updated saves me a lot of time, I just load up and the main website and know that the forums will also be the same.
Games with a community feel generally suffer from players being deluded into thinking that they are as much a part of the development process as the developer. The truth is LFS will be developed how Scawen and co want and this will be done to their own schedule.
I doubt this one will be. I thought Ciph had up and left this forum?
Bob Smith was supposedly working on one, but I imagine he's seen the disintegration of this thread and wants nothing to do with this for the time being.
The way I see it, the part of the community want LFS to be something that it wasn't intended to be. I for one much prefer driving different cars around if LFS. The online racing element isn't really my cup of tea, but I love most elements of LFS, so I look for ways to make it more like the product I want it to be.
If the editing community were ever to get bigger then they'd move further away from the main LFS community.
But it would be nice to get a good application for real players who fancy playing around with the cars, so don't hide the code completely from everyone!
Reminds me of the catholic church in the middle ages, exactly the same thing happened back then... Don't let the peasants read the bible, we'll keep it in latin and read it to them... just the same as don't let the normal people adjust the stats of their cars in LFS, we'll release a tool with preset adjustments for them to use...
Whilst I can see some sense in what you're saying, this seems like a backwards step in regards to tweak's functionality. It would be removing a huge amount of the variety from what is currently an almost limitless program.
No disrespect to you Bob, but we've all seen how busy you are and also how long it takes to program an up to scratch version of tweak. Adding in presets would take even longer and would put the ball in your court for creating these cars and future presets.
I get a huge amount of satisfaction from modelling cars I've driven in real life, as well as cars I've seen or read about in magazines such as Evo. In this month's magazine they looked at the best cult cars from the past 20-15 years. Having read the article I was able to load up tweak and lfs v and model a basic Maserati Shamal and alpine a610.
What I'm getting at is that I doubt you'd be releasing a version of every car out there and so we'd be stuck with a few preset Enzos and Gallardos to please the masses.
I do hope that an unrestricted version of tweak is released for registered users, whilst LFS is predominantly an online racer there is a huge amount of fun to be had from playing the single player game, especially when you add tweak into the mix.
I'm not a huge online racer, simply for lack of free time to spend perfecting setups and racing lines and so when I do have 20 minutes to play on LFS I normally like to mess around with Tweak.
If Tweak stops being released then it'll be a real shame because for me it provides an extra element to the gaming experience of LFS.
I'm a fully paid up owner of both S1 and S2 and have played for a number of years, when there was just blackwood... and what I find annoying is the sim snobbery amongst alot of tweaks detractors. I'm no worse than them for liking to play around with the specs of the cars in LFS, I know it's not up there with spending 18 months getting the very best laptime at BW, but this is what keeps me playing LFS and more importantly for people like Scawen it's what keeps me paying for each new version of LFS.
Can't help thinking that this is a shame it wont get released for a while.
It sounds like the only bit of content in development at the moment. It's always a worrying sign when the only news from the devs is about account security - this isn't RuneScape...
We've got a lot of people who want to try and squeeze a bit more life out of LFS, especially in the absence of any new content and being able to mod cars would certainly help.
Hope it gets released soon and isn't neutered in the process, by that I mean we're only able to mod the demo cars.
I can't help thinking that if the devs just let us know what exactly it was that they were developing, then a lot of this speculative suggestion making wouldn't occur.
Bottom line is many guys who play LFS are now bored with the exisiting content. If we knew what was upcoming then maybe we'd stop asking for new stuff...
Oh and yes I'd love for there to be more tracks (and cars).
