Thanks, it made all the difference (4s per lap on RWD cars, too)! Unlike another post here
I wouldn't have noticed the problem if not for the wheel visible. Not only does the cockpit w. wheel look more natural, it also gives me a better idea of what the computer is doing - especially in ISI sims, with some combinations the lag is more than with others, and then I know I have to watch out. Or reduce graphics next time.
Aaand the new wheels in LFS look soooo sweet! Great job on the interiors.
Now, if only the devs could figure out static shadows under cars...
I have just said hello again to LFS, after quite a while. Gotta love the way it looks and sounds now, with patch Z. I still find this sim trully unbeatable in certain areas But...
I'd always found LFS to be great at steering accuracy - so much better than rFactor with its steering lags. In LFS, I always found the on-screen wheel to be nailed to my physical controller. Not any more...
I now have a TERRIBLE wheel lag, it looks like a particularly calm student driver is holding the onscreen wheel trying to follow my moves. I can jerk the wheel abruptly, and that other guy starts turning slowly, and ends the movement smoothly a second or so after I end my move.
I have a G25, 0 steering angle compensation, on-screen angle the same as on wheel. Framerates are 70-80 most of the time.
Ha! Funny thing is that I have found the exact same cockpit for my system. Thrown out near the trash can by someone who brought a leftie from the UK (it's a British version).
I didn't go as far as taking it all, just left the dials section and one dash vent (the single one is on the right in my case), where the G25 shifter will go, eventually.
Looks great - now you just need to put some proper LFS gauges where they belong - it would only make sense, having gone this far
Myself I'd like to put a LED bar tach and a gear indicator there.
It feels good to see you back here
To answer your question, and I said it before, I do feel quite a bit of inaccuracy in response of the wheel. I love the carlike smoothness, weight and torque of the wheel, and have always wanted that from a PC wheel. But what I have here is too much, movements close and beyond traction limit are very imprecise and slides are nigh impossible to control. The left downhill kink after the long straight on Nordschleife, a bit of a "mutkurve" - I spin out almost every time, whereas I get it right every time on the G25, at full speed (corvette c6).
I have been blaming the centering spring, which somehow is always on, so that could take away precision (wheel returns to center when car is standing). But probably it's more than that, maybe it is the inertia after all.
IMHO, whatever you can do to make the wheel a little more responsive, you should do it as quickly as possible. I may be biased, but I think most agree as to this deficiency of the wheel, and it will become a part of the general opinion about it in the future. Most of the other things can be ironed out with time. A backprop for the pedals to keep them from flipping would come in handy. So would a choice of better plastics / better dies (without barbing at cast edges) for the pedals (they just cannot look this way at this price point).
Just one thing I think I have never mentioned - in my view, the top row wheel buttons should be smaller, with their upper part separated and left solid - they are pressed too easily while turning the wheel.
Wish you all the best in what you're striving towards, hoping you'll get there (even if it takes learning to yell in Chinese )
I wonder why? Maybe because:
- it is not called a beta test
- production items have been delivered to happy full-price buyers, and beta-tests tend to be pre-production
- unlike in a beta, we are supposed to publicise, film and be outspoken about whatever we think of the wheel, rather than report it quietly to the devs
I am not complaining, because it exciting to try the first hi-spec wheel of the very promising company catering to the need of simracing fans, and Fanatec are user-friendly in this (although they never responded to my lengthy review/request I sent them).
But a beta it's not, so if someone feels sarcastic, they are authorised to do so, if I understand the tester instructions correctly.
Okay, ArrAssAdor, but the main point about the wheel, as seems to be the consensus among testers, is that its FF is LESS accurate, not more. Also, many testers seem to agree that there seems to be some centering spring at all times. I have centering spring off everywhere, and the wheel keeps centering itself when the car is stationary in rF (will check back with LFS in a while). The speed of the wheel is not an issue, as seen on kamkor's drifting video - the directness and accuracy of FF is - as expressed by kamkor himself, and confirmed by myself and others.
I was driving the Corvette C6 in Lienz for hours on your wheel, trying to have fun fishtailing it a bit. But I could never catch it, couldn't feel the edge of traction on the front wheels and apply that little understeer when needed. Then I changed to G25, and it was as though someone took a blindfold off my eyes and shackles from my hands - the inputs became legible, I knew instinctively what's happening with the wheels.
So, while it feels nice and realistic to have a "heavy" feel on the wheel, I'm not sold on it unless the inputs become clearer, and I am sure that one way to do that would be to do away with that centering force/damper thing.
And I cannot use the wheel anymore because it keeps going off-centre every lap or two - I am confident, however, that it is a minor niggle that can be dealt with through new drivers.
And a question to other users - are you experiencing the problem of pressing the top row buttons inadvertently all the time? I think they are too big and too close to the rim. I have de-assigned the outer-upper buttons, (1, 7), but still I press buttons 3 and 5 sometimes.
Having said all that, I love the wheel for how it is built so well, I love the H-shifter, and the whole idea of making a wheel better than the best so far. I think that it can happen if a few things are addressed.
Same here, kamkor. The uber-tight Meganes in rF suddenly felt limp after I changed back to G25. Actually, turns seemed more difficult to make (contrary to the Corvette with countersteering situations). Yet, lap times improved by 1 second on a 1 minute lap, on average.
The reason for the good on-centre feel of the 911 is simple, however. It always seems to have a centering spring/damping mechanism on, regardless of controller settings. So, it feels nice on the easy side of the slip curve, but is out of ideas where more than the basic, linear force feedback is in order.
I wrote to Fanatec that they should give us an opportunity to try the wheel without the centering spring on, haven't received a reply yet.
Only thing is, you are much better off leaving the top corner buttons unassigned - I keep pressing those (look R/L) when least desired, e.g. when countersteering.
isamu, you seem to be forgetting one little detail - take Frex wheel, Frex adapter, Sparco/OMP wheel, Frex or VPP pedals, TSW or Frex shifter, and it costs you what - 10 times as much as this set? You can buy a nissan 200X for that and drift and race it like you stole it.
Also, let me tell you, it is much more difficult to make a decent wheel at a realistic price like the Fanatec wheel, than to make a monster machine a few maniacs like yourself will buy regardless of the price.
So kindly put your money where your a..e is and leave Fanatec alone, will ya!
Good thing the wheels are vibration-resistant
For those not in the know, that's Polish army equipment on that photo (OMG, is that grand treason I'm committing?).
Reluctantly, I have to agree Maybe I'm used to wrong physics, but the drifting is nfs easy for me. It is better than before, but I was hoping the new physics would blow the competition away, as I have a lot of sentiment for LFS. Unfortunately, for me the new tyres feel like they are made of something spongy and sticky, rather than hard and 'biting'.
Still, I hope the new physics will attract many beginners to LFS, who were once put off by all that twitchiness of the old cars. The new ones must feel great if one hasn't been through GTR or the rfactor PCC mod.
Well, in mine, and I'm not alone in this, the gas pedal sometimes (about once in a two-hours session) dies for a while, have to release it and get on it again. I'm not good enough to do endurance or league racing, so it's not a big deal, but it happens. I have read from some folks who have the same problem.
