I actually think that this is a good suggestion: When my G25 shifter is in neutral, the LFS car should be in neutral too. And when my G25 shifter is in third gear, the LFS car should be in third gear too. However, it would be even cooler if there's an awful grinding noise if you put the shifter into a gear without clutching...

And when on the subject: It would be very cool if we finally get real racing /dog gearboxes for the GTR's/single seaters...

There has only been one 'good' diesel (in Le Mans last year), and it was only good because the equivalency rules gave it a massive advantage. In real life a petrol engined car is massively quicker over any race distance above 50m than a diesel.

I wouldn't say that... A diesel BMW 1 series (120D) finished 5th overall at the 24h of the Nurburgring! They declassed a lot of Porsches, Astons, Lambos etc. in a relatively underpowered car...

I'd like to see a muscle car in LFS, something along the line of the Roush Mustang (spelling?) seen on Clarksons 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly' DVD would be cool! It's supercharged and puts out about 500hp. Because it is heavy and not so much of a handler (it looses a race against an Elise), it could be competitive in the LRF class...

Quote from AndroidXP :I absolutely don't understand how so many people can vote the FZ50. I never see it driven online, which is probably down to the fact that it handles awfully on any track that involves corners. Most favourite car, eh?

I voted for it... It's amazingly fast if driven properly (I'm faster in a FZ5 than in the LX6 or RAC). You just have to drive it correctly: Go very slow (it must seem too slow for you, then it's right ) into the corner and power out of it.
And it is very funny to drift around, too...

So the car is wonderful to drive, but unfortunately there are not a lot of servers offering FZ5 races, and often there are people that can't handle the car and drift all over the track... So it's more a hotlapping car for me...

Well I'd really like to see a 'supercar' class with higher power road legal cars power-to-weight-ratio about 500hp to 1500kg). There should/could be

-a mid-engined car (maybe a RAS(port) with a turbo'ed 6 cylinder engine, think the new Noble),
-a FZT (4wheel-drive and turbo'ed FZ5 a.k.a. Porsche 911 Turbo) and
- a FR car with a big V8 (think Corvette Z06).

And it would be nice to change the engines of the XRR/FXR: I don't think that there are racing cars with 4 cylinder engines that put out almost 500 hp. I know that it is possible to have 4 bangers as powerful as that (I once read about an Evo with 1000hp) but I doubt that there are actual racing cars like that. The only ones I could think about would be the JGTC Imprezas, but they put out only about 300hp.

Otherwise I want a FZ5 S, a FZ5 4S, a FZ5 Turbo, a FZ5 GT3 and maybe even a FZ5 GT2... I hope you see what I mean :-)

Quote from JTbo :Hmm, I don't know what you mean by unrealistic values, but with tires, maybe, however I have not seen many that really understands those tire curves and how real life curves and rfactor curves corresponds to each other as rfactor curves do not contain absolute values as reallife curves do, so there is not enough knownledge and specially that little is not made available for public so that everyone could understand them so no wonder 99% of mods are not realistic.

Put real values and you get real like handling, as well as engine is possible to make it, but you have to find all real values and how many can find and show me spring rate, damper rates, suspension motion ratio etc. values from Peugeot 206 for example? None, there is no such data available at least not from google, to get data you need to get connections make favours, threat, torture and still you miss some bit.

Fantasy cars are much easier to make, you need to decide real like values and do calculations based on that.

I would say that you can make pretty damn good feeling car, very real like, but it will be off, as is car in LFS too, there is too much limitations still.
Also you must remember that even car would act 100% like real, feedback what you get, what you see, hear, feel is going to be off and car won't feel still like real thing, but car that is less real may feel more real because of limited senses that are off more than most of us think.

Oh yes that physics thing, really wondering where that word has came to use, it is parameters of car what is meant when people say physics, quite misleading indeed, but that is standard term I think?

I know that not all needed values are known... I tried to find all needed data for the 350Z in Racer 2 years ago, so I know how hard it is to get all the needed data...
The fudging I talked about is most obvious with the tyres: The controversial NAPP mod for GTR2 (that feels very real according to some individuals) for example used tyre curves with 2 peaks, something that is completely unrealistic as far as I know, but you have to talk to axus or Todd, they are the 'tyre gods' in this forum....

And when you say 'I would say that you can make pretty damn good feeling car, very real like', I have to disagree... This is just my personal opinion, but I haven't found a car in an ISI based sim that behaved 'realistically' (as I would think it should), especially when sliding...

Quote from frokki :
I'm quite certain that if LFS is ever moddable, no-one has (and can't!) touch the physics - you just have to set parametres for suspension geometry (if not mounting points) and tyre properties, etc.

Obvously, correct me if I'm talking nonsense, as I have no experiennce of modding a game.

That's how it works in RFactor, too: You can just change different parameters (suspension layout, torque curve, aero layout etc.)...
But it seems to me that you have to use unrealistic values to get a car to behave appropriately in all ISI engine based sims. This is the so called fudge factor

So if you see somewhere something like 'this mod features completely new physics', it refers to the parameters mentioned above...

And I agree, it's a rather stupid term, since there is only one 'physic' in reality, you can't change physics...

Quote from Shinrar :I'm pretty sure the clutch isn't the primary issue with the grinding noise.

On my bike, sometimes when downshifting coming to a light I try to drop it into first a little to soon. The revs would, if I did shift, hit 4 1/2 thousand RPM on a 6 thousand redline. However, if I try this, when I tap to downshift the transmission grinds and I end up in neutral, the bike refusing to drop into first.

This might have to do with the gears. If memory serves, I belive in my bike the first gear's teeth are straight while the others are at an angle. This aids in shifting while moving, but obviously the first gear is a lot harder to slam into gear at high RPMs. And I don't revmatch on my bike, so possibly I might be able to get it into first at those speeds if I tried. Possibly.

I figure, the grinding noise comes from when the gears don't line up right and end up not sliding into place. The faster they're spinning, the harder it is for them not to catch. The purpose of the clutch is to aid in the catching of the gears. Thus, without the clutch, the game must assume the gears aren't catching (which, with a racecar, I'd guess is easier since most everything is spinning faster than on my bike).

Its all a guess, build from my personal experience and my limited understanding of automotive mechanics. Oh, and incase you're wondering, my first gear is fine. I haven't noticed any effect of the grinding noise (other than me shuttering).

OK, looks like a lot of people can shift without the clutch and without grinding gears... So I think it's best to forget this suggestion... But thanks for everyone's reports on his experiences with clutchless shifting...
I think I have to try it again, maybe I was doing it at speeds that were too slow: I wasn't too comfortable trying stuff that I don't know about the outcome at too high speeds...

I tried it in a Volkswagen Transporter (a big van) But I haven't tried it more than a few times, so it's quite possible that I did something wrong...

BUT: In GPL and in Racer shifts without the clutch result in grinding noises, so I assume it can happen, or why would the respective devs have taken the time to implement it?
A small suggestion: Add gear grinding noise...

I do sometimes find myself wondering how the game would have turned out had SimBin/Blimey licensed the LFS engine instead of relying on ISI's.

We would have THE sim! Best physics engine so far with nice real life car and track models...

Quote from BuddhaBing :
Apparently Blimey will be using their own in-house race sim engine for their next title, Race, which depicts the WTCC series. Race is due to be released this November and I am very much looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

This is not correct: RACE is being developed by the new Simbin and not Blimey and it uses the (modified) ISI engine (rain effect from GTR2 is in for example)...
Blimey is indeed working on their own engine, but they haven't announced anything yet. We only know that the project is rund under the codename FALCON...

First of all, sorry for starting a new thread, I don't know why I missed the HARDCORE mode one...

Quote from deggis :
According to this, Scawen might be working on it right now: http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?p=159720#post159720

I know that the gearbox simulation for each car is being improved... I meant that the server should be able to force the use of a H shifter controller on H shifter cars... At the moment you can use sequential shifter controllers for cars that use a H shifter in the simulator (in fact, every car uses a H shifter/synchromesh box right now...).

Quote from deggis :
I don't understand what's the point of some kind of hardcore mode, LFS is a friggin' sim and we don't need separate semi-hardcore and true-hardcore modes. I suggested a month ago or so removing auto blip/cut completely from cars that would never have those in real life (thread here), but majority of people disagreed with me. Kinda funny that we pretend to play a true simulation and still everyone wants to use driving aids... don't get me totally wrong, of course it's pretty hard to use manual clutch without a third pedal, that's why I'm not saying manual clutch should be forced. But everyone can do blipping and cutting manually with a regular 2-pedal setup so it definately doesn't make things unfair.

I'd really like to see a hardcore sim too! I thought that nK PRO would be a no compromise sim, but even there an auto lift/blip option exists

I find it a bit irritating to read all these negative comments (well, it's more bashing than negative comments :really about ASS. I highly respect these guys for writing a whole magazine every month in their free time...
Sure, they are often enthusiastic about some things that are not so well (RFactor review, nK previews - the review was pretty good!), but nonetheless the mag is interesting to read (at least for me). And when you compare it to printed game magazines, I don't see that much of a difference: You'll often see games wildly hyped in printed mags that are just crap...
To sum it up: Every one has a different opinion, it is rather likely that you dislike something that another person loves... And every 'objective' review has always a big subjective part...

More on topic: So you guys don't like the style of the comparison? You think it's crap? Well, go on and do your own! The RFactor demo includes the BMW-Sauber, download it and do a comparison yourself, write your observations down, add some nice screenies and tables and diagrams and submit it to ASS. I'm sure they'll include it in the next issue...

Server should be able to force aids off...
severin_schoepke
S2 licensed
Hi all!

I'd like to see the ability to force (selected) aids to be off by the server. So for example the server could 'say' that brake and throttle help are not allowed, neither is auto lift and auto blip, but auto clutch is... It would be cool to also be able to force cockpit view.

A list of aids that should be able to be forced off would be:
-throttle and brake help
-auto lift and auto blip
-auto clutch
-sequential shifter*

*a remark here: It would be cool to define for each car what kind of gearbox it uses (at the moment sequential or H shifter) and then force the type of gearbox on the server. So for example the XRT could be defined to have a H shifter and the server should then have the option to force the use of a H shifter for this car...
I suggest this because of the availability of the G25 wheel and I think that a lot of LFSers will use it. And I assume using the H shifter on it makes you slower than using the sequential shifter (shifting takes a longer time and is more difficult -> possibility of misshifts), so it would be cool to force the same rules (using the H shifter) for all...

I know that this last suggestion might seem like an overkill, but I'd like to hear your thought on the matter :-)

Quote from Woz :Oh yes, how I want LFS ported to a DRM infected OS that eats 800Mb while idle and does not trust the user and locks them out from core areas . At least it allows the likes of Sony, RIAA, MPA in to install any DRM etc they feel like and also scan your machine when you want to use content to see if feel its secure enough to let you use the content you have purchased.

At least Sony will not have to worry about root kits any more they will have the keys to your system given to them by MS. Oh joy

I also dont want to be able to use any virus/malware/spyware protection apart from that created by Microsoft because we all know the great track record MS have in that area.

Sorry, but I fail to see how people get excited about Vista. Have none of you looked at "Trusted Computing" and what it ACTUALLY means to YOU the user?

This should highlight where MS are going with Vista... The new Zune system will NOT play the current batch of MS WMA DRM infected files that are covered by the MS "Plays for Sure " initiative. If you have any of those DRM infected files then tough, you need to keep hardware that plays them along with a Zune player.

Or how about the fact that MS can take months and months to release patches and bug fixes unless the issue is in their DRM system in which case they get the fix out the door in 3 days. And when that is cracked a new patch follows 2 days later.

Just get yourself a nice Mac Pro or install Linux for all your work. Then dual-boot into a Vista partition only for gaming (if you ever need it for a game that needs DX10, which will be hopefully not before 2008 or so and till then there are maybe alternatives...)

Quote from The Dide :Best Motoring videos of Japanese GT Series show, they do use heel&toe..
don't know about FIA GT, though, but I guess, they don't need to kick the clutch for shifting...

In the 'JGTC Official Guide' DVD it looked to me like they don't heel&toe, but do rather left foot braking and blip the throttle with the right foot... In some in car footage you see the driver's right leg move up and down while downshifting (must be the blipping) but the left doesn't move (so they seem to not disengage-engage the clutch but rather seem to press the brake pedal the whole time).

But on the main topic: I do heel&toe in the GTR's (and I use the clutch). But it would be very nice if LFS finally implements different styles of gearboxes: the already available synchromesh for the road cars, a dog box for the GTR's and a semiautomatic dogbox for the single-seaters. I hope this makes it into S2 final...

I think Bump Mapping could be added in a week or so... It's really not that hard: Like it was said before, you just have to load the shader file, create a shader program from it, switch the resulting shader on and pass some arguments... And shader code for bump mapping can be found all over the net.

But for me personally LFS looks good enough for now, I just like to see a bit more detailed cockpits... Nicer lighting (bump mapping, specular mapping and HDR) can wait.
Maybe Scaven just isn't so much into graphics programming so that he doesn't bother to learn shaders, and that's perfectly fine for me...
