Quote from Gills4life :Thank god rally cars do have heaters. Rallying in the UK weather would be unbearable. When I went rally driving in Shropshire I was eager to get into the car, but not to drive, just to warm up !

only the basics in rally cars.... everything that's unnecessary is gutted from the car - heating stays since it takes heat from the radiator and requires no extra heavy accessories to function...

you'll often see A/C controls, power windows/locks controls etc..., but everything behind is gutted so none of it works.... though i have seen a couple of Production class cars with working power windows....

imagine driving without a heater in quebec.... -30C....sometimes down to -60C with windchill factor... when Francois Duval ran the Charlevoix rally here a few years back, he staid in the car the whole time, even during services, with the car jacked up :P ....wuss....

Quote from CharlesMartin :This is great!

3 little questions :

#1 : Is the layout of the actual oval track precise? Might be fun to run this online with the FXR, kinda like the Sport Compact that run there :-P

I was crewing for a Sportsman team that practiced there this saturday and man, this look so small in the game LOL

#2 : Was that a Solo event (asphalt) or an actual rallycross?

#3 : Any pointers to other real QC layouts?

Finally, thanks alot, great fun!

#1 i think the layout is slightly smaller than the real thing, but not that much, it's not super precise either, but it will give you an idea
#2 it was an actual rallycross, though pretty simple (compared to this weekend's rallycross at sanair which was much more like a true rally)
#3 i'm looking for good reference plans for the sanair track, both the circuit and trioval, so that i can make the rallycross layouts

St-Eustache rallycross tracks

I just made layouts of the CASDI Rallycross Series runs at the Autodrome St-Eustache (just north of Montreal) race track. The purpose of the whole event is to allow the teams to get a glimpse of how a rally works, for the drivers to get used to following pace notes and for the co-drivers to learn how to read pace notes and handle the rally procedures and paperwork.

The first one is a run on the oval part of the track (top part in picture below) and the other one on the circuit part of the track (bottom of the picture below).
http://www.cherrypickerracing. ... cks/steustache_aerial.jpg

Each layout is ran 3 times total, twice the first one, then twice the second one, then each one once again

I've included a plan of how each layout is ran.
Just follow the lines in order (red -> yellow -> green -> blue)

or, read the instructions:

Oval:
Start
-> turn right onto curve B then left onto straight 1
-> after the hairpin, get onto the curve A and onto straight 2
-> then curve B and onto straight 1 again
-> this time after the hairpin go right onto straight 3 for a full lap around the oval (B -> 2 -> A -> 3) and from straight 3 turn onto straight 1
-> after the hairpin, turn left onto curve A, onto straight 2
-> FINISH

Circuit:
Start
-> keep right onto straight 1
-> turn left onto straight 2
-> turn right and left into the roundabout
-> out of the roundabout, go ahead onto straight 3
-> turn right onto straight 2
-> hairpin left onto straight 1
-> turn left onto straight 2
-> right and left again into roundabout
-> out of the roundabout turn right and right again
-> FINISH

You can find the results (including lap times) from the 2 events so far at:
http://rallyscoring.com/results/2007/St-Eustache/index.htm
The first one started on asphalt but after 2 runs it got snowed up so that's why there is so much difference in the lap times. Based on those times, I suspect my layouts are slightly smaller than they should be.

Also, some videos (outside and in-car) from my runs during the second event -> http://rancid.ca/modules/articles/
photos -> http://rancid.ca/modules/myalbum/viewcat.php?cid=55

P.S. If anyone wants, I can TRY and extort the road book from my co-driver and post the pace notes here

go hijack some other thread peeps illepall

so i installed vb6 again and after 2 years of not touching it, everything still is in my head, google helps to refresh the memory but after an hour of coding i'm almost back in shape....

so i've got the basic structure for the lesson editor setup, it reads the .lll and .lsn files and displays a nice little list of lessons with all of their info. i should be done by tomorrow if nothing comes up.

is there any way to impose constraints in the layout files? what i mean is requirements, like reaching a minimum speed before braking?

the plan for now is to modify the layout i made of the closed circuit course that we use to teach parking and make it into a lesson or even multiple lessons for each parking type (i know it's not the best tool for that, bla bla bla, but i want to give him a sort of a link between the game and real life)
another set of lessons will be a few laps around the skip pad in different cars to demonstrate the different handling of each drivetrain
then a lesson in emergency avoidance of an obstacle

any other ideas?

Victor:
LFS would be used commercially, either as a standalone lesson that you pay for or part of a more complex training course. That's why I said that my boss will be the one contacting you guys IF (hopefully WHEN) he decides to use LFS. But let's not get ahead of ourselves. Just as a side note, would you guys be willing to create an extra car or 2 to fit our specific needs (not for free of course), just in case the boss asks ?

Is there any other 900degree wheels other than the DFP?

For the display, I was thinking of a projector or multiple screens. Any input on this? (price is very important)

About TrackIR, is it suitable for multiple users or do you have to calibrate it every time a different sized person uses it?

I want to gather as much info as possible so that I can show the full potential of the game to my boss. (hopefully i'll have a shot at teaching using LFS)
Also, the budget is very important, driving schools in quebec work on a VERY tight budget, so the cheaper the better.

I don't want to bother the devs....yet.

First I want to show the game to my boss and see what he thinks. If he likes it, he'll be the one contacting the devs and working out any details. I guess I should mention that I'm a driving instructor.

I just had a quick look thru the lessons files and it all seems pretty simple at first glance - a list of lessons, each lesson uses a text file, a layout file and an image. I'll try writing a small proggy to edit the lessons files and create a couple of them, just so that it has a nice interface when I show it to my boss.
LFS for teaching

I was wondering if it would be possible to use LFS to teach driving.
The most obvious thing that comes to mind, is teaching control of the car.
I've suggested this to my boss and it turns out that they're currently looking for a computer simulation to use.

It might be interesting to use the car park and set up a course with cones and barriers. A slalom, an emergency braking course, and even maybe something basic, for beginners, where they can practice their turning and stopping. Our school currently offers a skid control course which is 3 hours theory and 1.5 hours practice in a modified car, i think LFS could be added into that to make the course even more appealing and constructive.

Can we currently design our own driving lessons or do we need special software for that? Any chance the devs have anything to say about that?

I will be doing a demo for my boss sometime in october, any suggestions?
I'm thinking of setting up a slalom/emergency braking/emergency turn course in the car park and another on the skid pad, and of course, I've already created the setup that we use for teaching parking so that he can more easily compare real life to LFS.

How are your parking skills?

I'm a driving instructor and one of the courses our students do is a closed circuit parking course where they're practicing their parking skills.

So I was playing around with the autocross editor and got the "super bright idea" ( illepall ) of recreating the layout of the closed circuit. Then I added the starting line, checkpoints and the finish line and......voilà!

Check out the picture to get an idea for the general layout.

Lemme give you a general walkthru of the closed circuit.

First, you have a 45* forward parking spot, so just get in there. Then back out the same way you came in.

Then then go towards the next spot which is a left hand side, 90* forward parking (CP1). Drive in, then back out, again towards the way you came from.

Next one is a 90* reverse on the right hand side so just back into it. Then go forward and turn left to go past the next parking spot.

This one is a 45* reverse (CP2). Go in, get out and go towards the next one.

Now you're at the right hand side parallel (in reverse of course!) so back into it.

Next one is a simulated parking besides the sidewalk, so you just want to try and get close to the green cones. There's a checkpoint here as well (CP3). Once you're done, go to the next one.

Another 90* in reverse. Back into it in reverse as usual and then go forward, slightly to the right, around the last parking spot.

The final one is a parallel on the left hand side, again in reverse and the finish checkpoint is in there.

It's pretty simple in real life, but the lack of stereo vision really shows when you try and do it in the game.

After a few quick runs, I can do it in about 1min 30seconds

BTW, it's on the Blackwood carpark.
