Long time lurker here too, I don't visit as much these days, kind of lost interest with the lack of progression, and moved off onto iRacing which i've hit a similar disappointment with lack of major progress given there budget / team size (sure they have done alot and content is great, but something still doesn't feel right).

I recently booted up LFS to remember the good ol days, but sim physics have moved on. I hope they can get back to there hay day with the physics update but there's alot more competition these days.

I've had LFS working under ubuntu. Theres a couple of issues but nothing that doesnt make it unplayable. It was quite a while ago i tried this.

some shadows look funny, not layed / rendered correctly
sound sometimes lags / clicks / pops
lack or force feedback / device support under linux

Piddy, first of all thanks for eastern creek. Second if the devs dont want to open up the game to outside editors, how about for the community to work with the devs and give them the content to put in game. I.e devs set a format of the track to be imported say 3d Max, community provides it. Devs review, comment and finally release it when both partys are happy. That way they maintain complete control.

I remember when Driver Emporium or ASS first opened that there was going to be a outside car added created by Sketchi. But it all seem to fall apart.

Quote from tristancliffe :I have yet to try an rFactor mod that is even remotely like real life (except of course Niels 'Vette ).

I'll stick with GPL - at least you know you have a decent physics engine underneath.

And no matter how flawed the physics engine, the same thing rings true - crap data in = crap data out. You can't fudge the input data to make it work properly. It might end up 'okay' in ONE scenario, but in a 10 lap race a simulator has to cope with thousands of different scenarios.

Maybe one day... but I'm not holding my breath.

I don't know if you've tried the catherham mod with realfeel (alot of work has gone into getting the suspension correct), but ive done a couple of seasons in that now. along with the vette and 79 mods thats the only ones I think are close in rfactor.

I just recently got one of these to go into my new machine:

ASUS P5K-E
Intel Q6600
Zotac 8800GT (660mhz)

Haven't got the machine working 100% yet, I can't get my DDR2-6400 to run in dual channel mode. but more than pleased with the current setup seems to run everything full res (1680x1050), full detail.

dpcars, Interesting stuff, congrats to the work you've done so far, DP1 looks like an awesome car, and I wish you all the best with its development. Sounds promising that LFS might see it in the future at some point too. Hopefully it will be more successful than RAC (raceabout) (which seems very much unloved online) but one of my favs as its the closest layout to my elise.

Some of the cool stuff in LFS that I love playing around with are the onscreen layovers, these can be accessed in replays too, I don't know if you've seen them heres a quick run down:

F = force views (see what forces are being applied, acceleration cornering)

F9 = tyre view (shows tire/tyre load, tire/tyre temps IMO)

shift-L (I think) = suspension view shows what the suspension is actually doing

These combined with F2 & F3 to speed up slow down the replay view. Have really help me understand vehicle dynamics from in a picture book way. Which has really helped my driving loads.

Revs then (revs +4 tracks) on the BBC B was the first game that got me hooked.

Then progressed through:

test drive, F1GP, GP2, vroom on Atari ST
indy 500, icr, icr2, nascar, nascar 2, GPL PC
Gran Turismo, GT 2, GT3, GT4 on playstation / ps2
Forza on xbox

i've tried to curb my habit of buying consoles for 1 or 2 driving games and concentrated on pc. Mostly LFS and rFactor at the moment.

I think the devs have already said something about the reasons why LFS is not released on cd. I think it mainly comes down to distribution costs. Cost to develop and get cds and packaging, plus the retailers cut = less money for the devs to use to develop. I think anyone that is serious about car games / race sims will have heard about LFS already via word of mouth. Its clear there current distribution is working quite nicely.

Theres no progression, I can come along as a complete noob and jump straight into a f1 car. Yeah right how many actually get the chance to drive that kinda car. most people will start off in very simular matched karts, formula ford, feistas etc etc

I think there should be some kinda unlock license for online racing. Optional on servers or course, but based on your experience, laps, offs, crashes etc etc. The better the driver you are the quicker your advance. A bit like nascar IPL jobbie but not so strict.

It would make people a bit more respectable to get in the higher cars

I remember there was going to be the first addon car external to the LFS team, announced in ASS I believe done by sketchi, anyone know what happened to that?

Anyone tried patch V under wine? I managed to get it working pretty easily

ubuntu 6.10 desktop (very impressed with it so far)
wine package installed

LFS seems to work more or less couple of issues:

- no sound (maybe vista stuff thats been added)
- shadows issues (minor)
- no real dial display

Something to maybe think about if your not into racing online with people, is hot lapping.

I have done some of this and it takes ages to do each track in each car. I usally start by just doing a clean lap and posting the time up. Then after i've done all the laps find which one im slowest at and concentrate a bit on improving my time, normally pretty easy at first, learning the car / track then tweeking around with the setup. I can normally get within a few secs of the WR on the shorter tracks.

I find it a personal challange to become better.

Looks really good, and its good that you've spent many hours putting this together but Im not sure its excatly correct. I could be wrong.

"The softer you make a shock absorber the faster the weight is transferred."

I think it is the other way around a hard damper forces the quicker the weight is transfered. I've spent ages trying to understand car setups and there are still many things i dont understand fully.

"I can make the rear compression damp harder so that less weight is
transferred to the rear".

Dampers are for controlling the speed not the amount, the springs control the weight that can be transfer front to back /side to side, increasing rear damper force you'll increase the speed in which weight is transfered.

think of it like this if you had a solid bar instead of a spring/damper the weight would be tranfered to the wheels instantly.

Prolly a good reason is working for yourself or somebody else. When your working for yourself your setting the priorities and have control over everything, working for someone there setting them. look at what happened to west bros and empire, thats an extreme situation but things can go off the rails at any point.

Im sure that must be in the devs minds too about where they go after they have finished LFS. Maybe they will go on todo licensed material (wasnt there talk about licensed rally material?) with a solid game engine they have created, maybe incorporate licensed material into the already existing frame work.

Licenses for cars and tracks are subject to who owns them. Some people will encourage the use while others will want booko bucks for it. I read a long time back on the racing legends site that team lotus didn't need any licenses thats why they were able to use and display the creation process of the lotus F1 car. While it was pretty common knowledge they were also modeling other cars which weren't shown (ferrari leman style 333 maybe?)

Look at LFS already 2 real life counter parts (raceabout and MRT), im sure they were done as side projects and included into the release. I think the main problem here is information, its all well and good trying to recreate a real life counter part, but the information (and resource) to get all the information is probably beyond the LFS team at this stage. Im sure that in future releases that content (cars and tracks) will outweight features (physics) when it comes to decide what will be done.

Heres mine. Only had it a couple of months so car is much faster than me at the mo. Box standard s1 which needs a sports exhaust to make it sound like a car and not a sewing machine. This is the car of my dreams its great to finally get one.

I used a cheap steering wheel cover from halfords, but msff is very thick and didnt go all the way round, it also needed to be cut coz the wheel is tiny. main problem i found was it made a wheel even thicker and uncomftable to hold.

Then the missus sugested a DFP after much hint dropping so i jumped at the chance

I just found rotational steering technique the other day. Its surpose to be very very good and give you good control over knowing where the steering is. You only ever take your hands off the wheel twice to get lock to lock on a 2 1/2 turn wheel
