Fully agree with everything Becky said. Luffield's a great area for spectating, the section just before Bridge is pretty good now too. I'd say on the Friday (as it won't be too busy), just travel light and spend the day walking around the circuit stopping at different sections for each support race etc. Then you'll get a feel for where you'd like to be sat, and it's worth seeing the whole place anyway.
Have you got Grandstand seats? If not take deck chairs and get there for when the gate opens if you wanna be able to choose where you sit / be near the front.
Have had many a car-park BBQ to let the traffic ebb away, although the road improvements over the last couple of years have made a considerable improvement.
The campsite near the circuit is handy but don't expect much sleep. I didn't mind people sitting up having a drink and laugh but the a$$-holes setting off fire-works and air-horns at 3 in the morning really got on my tits! I think the further out campsites are supposed to be quieter, although you've then got a walk / to take the car anyway.
Good tip is to take a radio with ear-phones so you can hear the commentary throughout the race (the cars drown out the tannoy) and then put a set of big ear-defenders on over the top.
Have fun.

Basically if you were to draw a line lengthways through the centre of the suspension coil then caster angle is the angle this line would meet relative to vertical (so if the spring is directly above the centre of the wheel then caster angle = 0).
Increasing caster improves straight line stability, increase the self-centring effect if you let the wheel go and increases the effect of camber when the wheels are turned (so improves grip whilst cornering but without impacting on straight-line speed). However increasing caster can lead to slightly less steering response (ie. slower turn-in).
If you look for the set-up guide in the LFS-wiki, that'll probably explain it a lot better than I have!

Quote from JJ72 :check the videos on youtube, it's much more than just a widescreen now.

Yes, I've just been having a read over lunch, seems it's something that's developed a hell of a lot in the last few years. There's a place a Bicester charging 7000 euros a day for hire of their kit!!
Specifics about the software they use are pretty scarce though, other than a few vague detials about laser & GPS surface scanning and the like. I guess it's all very proprietry. I'd love a go on one though!

I had a go in a Williams simulator a couple of years back. They bought into work as our company were doing some windtunnel work for them and provided some small (drivers helmets) sponnsorship.
It was basically just an old Williams F1 Chassis with a cutsom FF wheel (resembeling a proper F1 wheel) & pedals, with a widescreen attached to the top running what looked like F1 Career Challenge, (complete with ABS and auto gear shift driving aids enabled!). Gotta say after having just started playing LFS shortly before I wasn't particularly impressed by it as a simulator!

Dunno if they have a different rig for the drivers to use, or if they'll have updated the one I tried recently as it wouldn't have had the new circuits on, but I think most of them are probably based on your commercial driving "sims" . All the drivers say they're ok for getting an idea of which way the track goes, but not much more than that.

FJR (up)shifting
Si01
S2 licensed
Hi,
Having recently got my Nat A licence I've been having a few races in the FJR, but have noticed an annoying little irregularity. When i change up from 3rd-4th or 4th-5th I have to do so with either moderate revs (no more than 2 outta' the 4 rev / gear shift lights illuminated), or with the thing bouncing off the limiter. If I try and shift up with 3 lights lit or just as the final (red) light comes on (but not on the rev limiter) it cuts the throttle / the clutch comes in, but it won't actually shift up the gear.
It doesn't do when upshifiting 1st-2nd-3rd & isn't so bad 5th-6th. It also doesn't do it if I use the F08 on other servers (ie. without the intake restriction / ballast).
So my question is basically is this a bug / glitch (& if so is it something specific to my PC and hence can it be removed by changing a setting - I have tried playing about with the gear de-bounce setting or whatever it's called), or is it a product of the air restrictor or something on the FJR (& if so why?)

Cheers,
Si.

Quote from Zyrez :Well you all pretty much mentioned every car there is to mention, it all would be great in its own way. I cant decide which i would prefer over others. Think im for some V8.. wrapped in a 4 door saloon outfit

Why do you have to choose 1 car? As there are ~10 cars in S1 and ~10 cars in S2, it doesn't mean that there will be 10 cars in S3 but I'd bet (& seriously hope!) there'll be more than 1, and probably at least half a dozen. Be greedy and decide on a few mate!

Yes personally I agree with comment on the drag car, dunno how many people actually 'do' drag racing (don't myself!), so it might be a waste of effort that could be put to better use, but some people might like it.

Re: "elise" type car; I'd just like a mid engined car that you can really chuck about, and I think it'd probably compete against the LX4 quite well. Would be almost like the RaceAbout but with no turbo and less power, thereby elimating the peaky power delivery so you can really man-handle it.
(Gotta say I quite like the RaceAbout now, it seems to have been toned down a bit from the animal it was when I first started playing LFS a couple of years ago, or maybe I've just got a lot better!)

Yes the XRG/T shape might get a little over-used but it seemed the logical car to make a RWD entry into the "touring car" class.

My 2 pence worth.

Definitely should be included in S3:
- A large capacity normally aspirated (say 4l V8?) front engine RWD car to rival the FZ50
- The GTR race version of the above to compete with the FZ50 GTR
- A moderate power ~1.6/1.8l NA mid-engine RWD car (like an entry level Elise) to compete against the LX4
- A XRG GTR - A race version of the XRG (non-turbo) to add a RWD car to the 'touring car' (UFGTR/XFGTR) class
- A LMP1 LeMans type car
- The LX8 - gotta be done

Others suggestions (as S1 & S2 both conatian about 10 cars so 10 for S3?):

- A large capacity front engine saloon (like a Vauxhall Monaro (aka Holden Comodore) or the new M3)
- A largish capacity mid engine (4l V8 again or ~3.2l straight 6) car (as oposed to FZ50 which is a 911 style rear engined really)
- A 4WD version of the FZ50 (maybe with a turbo?!?)
- A dragster - for those who like that sort of thing!
- RB4 WRC - a lighter weight ~300-350Hp version of the RB4 for the Rally-X circuits

Possibly reduce the power of the XRTGTR & FXOGTR slighlty (to say ~400Hp) to give a GT3 type class (with the FZ50GTR and the new large front engine GT car making a GT1 class).

Digressing off topic somewhat (though that's probably for the best!) where did that avatar originate from Hankster? It's really bugging me.
I vaguley remember it from the good old days of my Commodore 64 owning youth. Was it from a Bruce Lee type game?

The button assignments for the paddles, and the 'shifter converted into a sequential' are different. You need to switch between the "shifter / sequential" in the control options, and then goto the button assignements and configure which 'buttons' you use to change up / down. - The paddles are buttons 4/5, where as to use the stick as a sequential its buttons 8/9 I think (which is the same assignment as 1st/2nd gear on the manual). So if you go for this option you then need to re-assign 1st and 2nd gears if / when you change back to the H-pattern maunal shifter.

HTH.

Given what you've got on there already, I'd say some Feeder (suggested: Just a Day, Shatter, High, 7 Days in the Sun, Yesterday Went Too Soon), The Frattellis (Chelsea Dagger, Baby Frattelli, Got My Nuts from a Hippy) and Foo-Fighters (god there are so many, Monkey Wrench, One by One, Stacked Actors, DOA??) are absoulte musts mate.

Other suggestions: Artic Monkeys, Hard-Fi, Stone Roses, Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Star Sailor, Kaiser Chiefs, Muse.

I was racing on one the CTRA servers, on SOtown Rev. I haven't played the reverse of many tracks for some reason. Anyway I got to the last lap, and got a run on somebody out of the hairpin onto the main start/finish straight, and egded alongside him round the final little right hand curve. Coming outta' the kink the other guy drifted across track slightly and gave me a little touch, giving me a bit of a tankslapper. I didn't bother controlling it as I was only ~20m from the line so I just let it spin across the line....... only to come to halt and wonder why I hadn't finished.....then realised that 'the line' was actually the start/finish line for the 'normal direction' track I'm used to racing on, the finish for the rev layout is another 100m up the road....Doh!!

If you're on a public server and the race length is only 5-8 laps then the only time you're likely to be lapped is if you joined mid-race or shift-S 'ed and started again from the pits (unless you're pretty slow and there are really quick guys are on-line). In which case I always pull well out of the way as I tend to regard any race I've joined half way through as more of a practice session than a proper race, & hence I'll do everything I can to avoid compromsisng the race of people who are racing for a decent position.
If you're in a longer race and you are 'genuinely' lapped (ie. have been running from the start but the other person is lapping you) then I'd say it's more accetable to keep racing until you can let the other person through without comprising yourself too much. But on a public server it's unlikely you're racing for any meaningful position if you're being lapped so just move over.

Yes, sorry, there was no real question or point to my post, I had just had a couple of beers and was being chatty.

The decals on the dash (fuel gauages, digi dash on the fox) seem a little neater / higher resolution, though it may be I have just inadvertantly changed the graphics settings when I was arsing around with the audio settings.
Sounds after patch w update
Si01

Just had the patch w install itself, started lfs up and all the car and menu sounds had a really bad nasty echo to them.
Just realised (having spent 10mins playing with all the sound options / editing) that for some reason the EAX settings for my soundcard switched itself to "cathedral" effects as the patch installed! lol.
Like the new dashes anyway. Off to see what the new sound effects are really like!!

Cool thanks guys,
I do have to share the connection with an i-pod wielding girlfriend, but other than that it doesn't really get much use other than general surfing, so I should hopefully have enough bandwidth to satisfy my addiction then!
Adam 100GB a month mate? You use it to watch TV or constantly downloading videos or something? Thats huge.
I'm hooked / thanks to the team inferno guys.

Just thought I'd say hi, & let you know I'm totally hooked on this awesome game!! I only got broadband just before Christmas, so downloaded it then, but got caught up playing GTL up until a couple of months ago. Then I finally got bored with GTL and haven't stopped playing LFS since. What have I been missing? never played on-line before but it's ace!! & most people I've come across are really sound, you can't beat car freaks!

Gotta say a big thanks to the Team Inferno guys, was getting a bit disheartened as I intially stuck to the simple XFGTi / B'wood & could do only 1.37's despite having what I thought was an ok set as it handeled fairly neutrally, downloaded the Inferno one & instantly went 2 secs. faster.
That inspired me to get racing with some of the quicker cars (FWD pah!), & again the Inferno website came in handy! Have become a bit of an FOX addict now. Quite frighteningly I've already clocked up over 300 laps on SOClassic. My lap times are gradually improving, got down to a 42.0x the other day, which whilst hardly troubling some of the incrediably quick dudes, I was quite please with.
Right off for some racing. Look forward to locking wheels with 'ya soon.
Si.

PS. How much band width does say an hours play use? Kindda worried I might end up exceeding my 3GB / month restriction as, as I said I'm getting kindda hooked probably averaging playing a couple of hours most days.
