Aye, don't worry about that. I'm pretty good at getting out of the way.

I been practising on Blackwood GP. I started off doing a 1:36 but I think I'm getting back into it again with a 1:13. I think I just need to find that little extra push somewhere round the track and I'll be getting back up to speed again
Hi dunno if anyone remembers me or not

Hi all. I used to play LFS quite a bit during the summer and autumn of last year, I was doing reasonably well on the old patch but I quit after the new patch was released due to not being able to control the car too well.

I want to give it another go, but I don't want to cause a pileup and get in peoples way while driving online. So I was wondering what the best servers for newbies would be...

I'm not a newbie to LFS, but I am a newbie to the new patch and for some reason I'm having a lot of trouble getting decent lap times (which is odd cos I'm normally quite good at driving sims), so I'm ideally looking for a server where people won't mind me pottering about at the back staying out of the way (I'll start from the pits if I have to, to avoid 1st corner pileups). The car I tend to drive the most is the FOX

I always start from the back... that way I can hold back a little and let all the crazies dive into T1, and I just carefully drive through the mess and usually gain up to 5 places without too much trouble.

I managed to get it working... Only problem I have now is the steerring is really really slow... Like I have to turn the wheel to almost a full lock before I can get the car to turn... any ideas on how to speed it up?
sidewinder steering wheel

I've been playing LFS using my sidewinder joystick, but it's decided to give up the ghost. I tried to play with my sidewinder precision pro steering wheel (no FF) and my car won't move. It seems like the game is seeing the pedals as pressed premanently half way down and I can't seem to fix the problem. Even when calibrating in windows the wheel appears to have the accelerator down half way and the brake seems to do nothing...

Any ideas?
mansell/williams 86 (or 92) or Senna McLaren skin for FOX?

I've been looking for a Williams skin for the FOX, but I've not been able to find one. Closes I have is a Mansell "red 5" from his Indy Car years.

I'm also looking for a Senna McLaren skin as well... I used to have these when I first started playing, but I didn't back them up and the sites I got them from seem to have vanished :S

My joystick seems a little slow on acceleration and a bit too quick in the corners, so I tend to spin a lot... Is there any way to fix this?
good servers for newbies?

Hi.. I;m not actually a newbie.. but, I've not played for over 12 months or so and my driving seems to have suffered as a result. So I was wondering if there are any decent servers anround for new players... I remember there were a few last time I was here, but now I can't find any.

pete: why not try mouse / keyboard combo? I guess it'd feel weird, but many fast drivers use it...

I tried the mouse control a few days ago, can't keep it on the track. I need more practise

well it's definately my joystick that's slowing me down, cos I just played GP4 and couldn't get anywhere near my personal best. My joystick isn't going full forward so I can't acclerate as fast as a should. And since I can't afford a new joystrick for a while I wont be racing on LFS for at least 2 weeks

I guess we've just been missing each other... no matter, I'm sure I'll see you on there sometime

Quote from AdamW :pete: what server have you been driving on? it'd be fun to get in a race at the same time sometime. I'm on mercury racing team, mostly.

That's where I am most of the time as well.

pete: yikes, you're driving 1:34s without having full accelerator travel? I think mazz was right with the baby alien comment! *runs away*

Don't worry, I've been having a terrible night so far... I've been driving erratically and can't seem to get any higher than mid pack. I'm still doing 1:35's got a 1:34 earlier, but most of my races have been wrecked by someone diving for a gap that isn't there and then driving into the back of me or just plain pushing me off the track

Quote from Richardf :I too use an old MS Sidewinder stick but I can only manage 1:36's at Blackwood in the GTi. I know that the main reason I am slow is that the centre position on the stick is loose and rattly, so I always have some degree of steering input even if I have my hands off the stick. This makes it impossible for me to brake in a straight line so I end up half way across the track when I want to be right on the outside ready to turn into the corner. What I need is a way to increase the deadzone on the stick... or a new stick

I've actually just found that my stick isn't going fully forward, this is what is causing my slow acceleration. I found this out by recalibrating when I got back from work and noticed that the stick is stopping just befor full forward deflection. if I force it it will go to full forward, but I;m scared that it will eventually snap or something.

a baby what? LOL

AeoInus: It's always a pleasure to race against a tough but fair opponent. I enjoy a good, clean but close race.

AdamW: I've had a few first places, but only when the 1:33 guys aren't around.

Quote from AdamW :pete: so did you make it to 1:33 yet? I got to 1:34.19, 1:33 feels like it'll be tough...

Nah, I've driven the wheels off the thing and the best I can manage is a 1:34.8x. Had a cracking race yesterday though. Started last out of 11 cars, doing 6 laps at blackwood and doing consistant low 1:35.0x managed to get to 3rd . The only 2 drivers ahead of me were doing mid 1:34's

One thing LFS has done is made me a much smoother driver than I was previously. Now all I need to do is work on speed

Quote from Rappa Z :go buy a wheel to go faster. I got that same joystick and i know it won't win u a race any time soon

I'm planning on getting one next weekend

Quote from RevengeR :if u drove 1:34 in version P, its ok, but if u did it in S/T its really fast for a rookie. gettin out faster from corners can caused by set differences, or even driving style. for starting, try PBUs set from team inferno, great for start low 1:33s possible w it (patch U)

I'm driving on version U, I'm generally getting 1:35's but every now and then drop into the 1:34's. The only race sim I've played consistently before getting LFS is the Grand Prix series by Geoff Crammond.. but that was getting boring because I find them all way too easy now. That's why I came to race against real people

oh okay... but how do I do that exactly?
a question of speed, or controllers?
Peteuplink

I've had this game now for about 2 weeks and I'm not doing that bad, but there is something bothering me. I spend a lot of my time driving around the Blackwood GP circuit, and my best time is a 1.34.xx, however I can't seem to get any faster than this, even if I drive outta my skin I just can't get any quicker, yet I've seen players doing 1.32's.

These faster drivers seem able to accelerate much faster from the corners that I can, so I was wondering if it's my controller that's messing my times up? I use an old MS Sidewinder USB joystick (not ideal for driving I know). I know it's not my setups because I'm getting setups from the quicker players, and my driving is normally pretty smooth and consistant... so I'm at a loss as to where I'm losing time?

Any suggestions?

Quote from Gunn :Indeed you can defend, but FIA also says, don't swerve on a straight. Changing line is not the same as jumping in front of an overtaking car.

OK, not at any point in my post did I say swerve... there's a difference between wating til the last possible moment and swerving, and moving over to defend your line. I'd actually said "if I see a car pulling out to pass me I will move out to block the other car, and I generally move quite far to the right, but leaving the other car JUST enough room so he's not on the grass" So I am still leaving a cars width enough for the other driver to pass if he feels he can get through.

I am quiet aware of good sportmanship when racing and and will only move once to defend my position. If the other driver decides to change his passing move to going the other way once I've moved to defend I'll NEVER decide to move back on him because this is classed as zigzagging which is against FiA rules.

Thanks for everyones opinions on this, it seems we're all pretty divided on this, so I'll just continue driving the way I am, but not taking unnecesary risks that will ruin someones (and my own) race.
