I was thinking about that too, danowat.
All things considered, I consider this a minor problem, but I wouldn't mind putting some cash in a fund for dedicated users who don't have the financial possibilities, assuming the system is well thought and not prone to abuse.
The most difficult part would be preserving the privacy of the users while deciding who the deserving users really are... So this should be a system based only on merit, regardless of a declared financial position.
On top of that, an anonymous fund would be much more efficient than personal initiative.
Im also sure there is lots of people out there that want a LFS S2 licence but cant spend the money on it. Iv been playing the LFS demo since S1. And only just bought a S2 Licence Yesterday.
Thats the perfect example, I wouldnt hesitate to help out for a dedicated user who has financial difficulty getting a license, and is going to use it to its fullest and help/contribute to the community in general.
Thats the thing, if you need to be told you are fighting a losing battle, drive the demo, chat on the forum, help out users, try making skins/layouts anything, just get intergrated with the community and see what happens.
The last time such an issue was raised, there was a user who tried profiting from a situation without any clue, putting some effort in making a page with links to other people's stuff. That was the wrong thing to do, but I guess there are a few ways to gain the respect and the help of the community. Some of us are into LFS very much, and we don't consider it just a game. It's something more, at least for me.
I cannot tell you what would make a user deserving from my own point of view. I think you'll have to decide for yourself, and let other people decide. It has to be natural, for you. You can ask, but there's no use in doing it, in my opinion. You cannot expect anything, since you don't know what other people think about who's a respectable and deserving member of a community, and why. It's down to personal preference, and it's a bit too early. Make up your mind, but do it alone, and don't force events.
Kirmy, like I said, anyone else than yourself can pretend to be in need of help.
So helping anyone who merely seems to need it would randomly land on either someone who truly is in need, or anyone else. Which would work against the purpose of wanting to help only those that need it.
This forum is really not a good place to find this sort of help.
And about the proposed fund, we should think about it very seriously. Assuming the developers have no opposition to it, they could manage a fund since they already have all the means to manage payments in a safe way. It may take some time, sure, and it's an initiative that could have some potential downsides, so it has to be really well thought out, but you can count me in for that.
Funds and their management wouldn't be a problem as much as choosing who gets what.
So far, IMO, it's probably best to let each person do as they wish. It might work as a common medium to arrange splitting license vouchers between consenting users.
E.g. Tristan and I agree to split a voucher for Kirmy, we could each just fill out a form saying so, and presto, Kirmy has his license, or voucher code, whatever.
