Traceroute output question
Hi, below is a copy of a trace route I ran moments ago. Pings to any remote destination are around 200ms, and surfing the web is as slow as. Could a tech-head tell me does the below trace route output indicate the problem is my router, or line congestion to the 2nd node (i.e. ISP)?

If it makes any difference, pinging the router does give <1ms pings (although occasionally also times out) but trace route always times out.

Thanks

Trace complete.

well as a "low-tech" i'd try to boot a "dummy-system" (a system that can be infected, but isn't a productive system) and try the trace route without your router.
alternatively i'd try the same trace at another time of day.
or ask a friend living nearby, to do the same...

hope that helped a bit

I think there's something wrong with your hardware, or your pc is being used by warezors/spammers/something. I have 50ms ping to your 2nd hop...

Or it might be that your neighbours/people living in the same area all use DC++/BitTorrent etc programs 25/8. It can happen if your ISP is oversubscribed or near the limit.

I have 108ms, and thats from the US!
@Micha: I can't really go on the net without the router. It's downstairs, I'm upstairs, an alternative is a DSL modem but that's USB. The only active phone socket is downstairs But if I can't otherwise find out the exact cause, I'll drag my PC downstairs and try the modem.

@Krane: Is there any way I can distinguish whether it's a router prob or congestion, without replacing the router?
this is what i get from berlin...

I'm beginning to think it's the router, because non-cached DNS queries are resolved 1 sec before I send it I'll carry the PC downstairs in the morning and try with the modem.

Thanks all y'all =)

Congestion you can try sort of check by trying ping in the early morning 6:00ish.. Then the net usage is the lowest usually.

The spammers/etc you can check by closing all programs using the net (ICQ, Messenger, Skype, Google Talk, P2P programs, etc) then wait a moment and run TcpView, the list should be almost empty.

I can't think of anything you could check the router without changing it... one thing worth a try is to disconnect the power and restart it.
Yeah the sysinternals stuff is good, I have & use all their free apps

Unfortunately that doesn't help, I restart the router quite frequently anyway because I need to change IPs. Never has any effect though.

Thanks

You may also want to reset the modem. When it's first connected to the DSL line, it negotiates the most noise-free frequency band to use with the DSLAM. If your line suffers from intermittent noise, it could help to make them re-negotiate.

I take it you didn't find anything with TcpView that shouldn't be there?
@bal00 : I've done a physical reset more than once since the connection started working, but it didn't help Long time no see

@Krane : Nah, nada (which is a small miracle since I have no FW/AV/ASW installed ).
