Hot Lapping
The absence of a proper manual is still confusing the hell out of me. What is 'hot lapping', or more specifically what is the purpose of it? Can't see any difference between hot lapping and sinlge player mode other than if you go off in hot lapping it tells you your lap is invalid. Am I missing something or is that just a really dumb question?

its a really strict (lap invalid - you broke the "rules" by cutting a corner or hitting a wall etc), the idea is that its to see how fast someone can get round a track - World Records are based off this
To continue from what jakg said.
Hotlapping is where world records (WR) are set. Do a lap and if you go off track or hit something the lap becomes invalid. Do a valid hotlap and you can save the replay and upload to LFS World and compare your time against other hotlaps on that car/track combination. Obviously the top hotlap is the WR time.
Understand now - Thanks guys
And you can download and watch everybody elses hotlaps. Great way to get faster. Then you can use all the analysis tools (F1PerfView, AnalyzeForSpeed) to see the WR lines and braking/throttle etc.
tkaing this thread I have to ask something, what means HLCV? HotLapC?VALID?
hlvc is the "hotlap validiation control" iirc.
thanks
