right iv been tidying up round house, and have come across alot of old computer parts that i forgot about....


700mhz cpu LOL
512 mb ram
lan card
40 gb HDD

right iv just stuck it all in my old case and im currently installing windows ME, as its not gonna hog the system resourses...

my thing is that im needing help with is..

what programs are best for hosting servers, what i mean is am i going to have to keep my moniter plugged into the server unit, or is there a program that will let me run the server through my main pc...


basiclly im running a dedicated server on this machine, but i want it out of way and have a unit set up out of the way with LFS been hosted 24/7...

i also have 8mb internet connection cant remember what upload is, but i can run 11 cars and it not lag.......


if all that makes sence too you guys then through your advice at me oh wise ones

If you're going for ME or below, you can use VNC. There are various versions. TightVNC, RealVNC, UltraVNC. They all do the same thing, but have slightly different features.

If you use 2k or above, then there's RDP. You can enable it under the system properties, under the remote tab.

You'll at least need to ensure that the system can boot without a keyboard, and ensure that the system will run the LFS server on boot (unless you want to manually restart it each time).

tbh, you *might* find it more economical to rent a server from 500servers, or crazyice, in terms of power bill vs the cost of a server from either of these providers, and it doesn't eat up your bandwidth.

PIII 850
256MB RAM
2GB HDD
Windows XP SP2
RealVNC

The limitation is my bandwidth, the server barely gets a workout.

I'd think so. LFS really doesn't use many resources on the server except for bandwidth. I haven't looked at cpu usage while the server is being used but I don't think it'd be much for a PII to handle. Might as well give it a shot, windows xp will run really slow, so mayb 2k would be a better option.

Me and 98 are bad choices because they're very insecure and if you're running a server can become a target. 2k isn't very up to date, in fact I'm not sure that MS suppport it any more, but atleast it's more secure.

In my opinion 98 is better then ME. But i think your hardware will do fine with Windows 2000 or XP too. You've got enough ram and 700 mhz isn't that slow.

You're right about Me and 98 but a lot of company servers still run on Windows 2000. With all service packs it is up to date.

what about security what should i run... ??

I am thinking of building a game+web server with a sempron, 512MB of ram.
