Gentlefoot.com Track Guides
Finally I've have completed the first track guide. I'd love some feedback so please go to my website - www.gentlefoot.com to see it. It would be much appreciated. I have recently added a lot of content to my site. There is now a full LFS section which you can get to by clicking the LFS logo in the top right hand corner of each page on the main site. Track guides include nice images of each corner and onboard footage of me doing a half decent lap. Also speed traces and track maps.

So far there is only the one guide for the FO8 around KY GP Long. I will add more in time.

My server - GentlefootFormulaRacing is set to this combo and you could also use the FOX if the FO8 is a bit much. It's set up for the Gentlefoot Formula Challenge (GFC) that will launch once patch X is released.

If you are interested in the GFC I have also created a section for it on my site. There is now a forum where you can read about the event and sign up if you want to. There are no details about rules etc yet because I've spent my time building the webiste but it'll be there soon. Need a break for a few days now though Been flat out on it.

I'm hoping a few people may read the guide and then go turn a few laps. It would be interesting to see if it makes people learn the circuit faster.

Anyway, have fun lads. Hope to see you on the server tonight

btw - there's a clip of me in the Golf round Brands Hatch on the About Us page of my main site too. Might be worth a look

Great, looks very good! What's the plugin needed for the videos? My FF doesn't even know what to suggest

e: works with IE so who knows...WMP11 & FF 2.0.0.3 is a bad combo I guess

great stuff

You may have to wait a few moments before they kick in. There's a lot of data on that page. They are just AVI files and I used the XviD MPeg-4 Codec for compression.

If it still doesn't work try downloading Virtual Dub which is the tool I used to compress them. Page works fine for me.
I thought I had just about every codec installed on my box, I can usually play ANY media file I throw at it.
I also have Virtual Dub installed... but for some reason Firefox doesn't like your clips...wont play them and cant identify the codec
Just tried it in IE7 though, and at least it works...must be a FF problem ...

Btw...text is garbled/overwritten at about the Turn 4 paragraph!
Sorry!
Yes, the embedded videos seem to be Firefox incompatible. Or whatever other reason there might be for not finding the plugin (or actually needing one in the first place).

Anyhow, I'll give this a look...

E: The text at "Turn 4" is also garbled.
T4 text - aah yes - I took a section out and thought I'd selected everything when I moved it up but missed a bit. Re-publishing now. Thanks for pointing that out guys.

I've got a video expert working on a way of making the clips work better. I would like FF users to be able to see this stuff obviously.

I'm on the case. Nothing like live testing eh!
The videos don't work here (Firefox, VirtualDub installed). The WDG validator throws errrors on the format for the EMBED tags ("Error: element EMBED not defined in this HTML version").

Seems like IE is more forgiving in this respect than Firefox.
This is very useful to me, thanks! It's just what I was looking for.

Seems there's a problem with FF. Working on it.
I'm using Opera and having the same problem with the vids. You might have a piece of IE-only code there... Maybe the codec is just missing here though...

i have about every codec known, its just a firefox plugin that doesnt work. just make them in FLV format so everybody who has a flash plugin can view them, which means firefox, opera and IE.

Me mates working on it now. What is FLV format? Not sure I can add those into my website builder program - certainly no FLV format in the list.

Think it might be the tagging that FF doesn't like. Gonna check the HTML with that validator tool.
Quote from Profi :In fact I had that one already and reinstalling it didn't help.
Good luck to you finding the FF problem anyway

Sure I will.

Storm_cloud (one of the fastest FO8 driver in the world) gave me some additional tips for Kyoto GP Long. So I've created a section in my forum for the really fast guys to post their tips on the tracks I feature in my guides. His tips have helped me already. Check 'em out.
I really dont like the way you've numbered the corners. On your map you've given KY GP 7 corners which is obviously a lot less than there are. You should number all the turns on the map even if you dont talk about them.

First of all, good job on the track guide, looks very promising

It's the same format as used on a lot of video sites like youtube and google.

Sure you can add them, but maybe you have to do it by hand if your editor doesn't have any predefined stuff for it.

What would be most convenient and simple (I think) is to upload your videos to youtube for example, and there will be a piece of code right on the page you can use to embed it in your page. It will save you the bandwith as well

example:

<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/YAUwOwowKBA"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/YAUwOwowKBA" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

you can find this on this page: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAUwOwowKBA (see the embed code in the box on the right of the video)

the <embed> tag isn't part of html specifications, it's code that only IE understands. The correct way is to work with <object> tags.

The other turns are so simple as to not need any guidance. I don't bother numbering turns that are just flat acceleration zones. If you don't like it write your own guide. lol

Thanks for the information dude - very useful feedback. I'll experiment with the stuff you suggest. Much appreciated.

Cool - I'll have a look through your site later. If there is some crossover then a reciprocated link is a no brainer
OK my video expect (DBP Stoney) has sorted the video problems for me. I will update the Track Guide tonight and download a copy of FF to check all works fine. Will post to let you know when it's done.
