Forum Improvement - More PM Slots
Idea:

Base number of allowed PM's on post count - Your allowed 100 PM's with 10 posts, and then 250 at 50, and then 1,000 with 500 up, and if your officially sad enough to break the 10,000 mark you get an unlimited number of PM.

Reason:

It's approaching the third time I've had to wipe my PM box because I've used up all available slots!
You don't need to delete them, you can save the PMs to your computer if you tick the box next to them and use the little menu at the bottom.

Why do i learn this now?!

Ok, i'm a n00b but it still wouldn't be bad - wouldn't use that much bandwith imo either, and i'm sure the mods must recieve the same (or more) PM's than me!

Erm... get in less arguments? I've got 103 and have only cleared out the ones that I'm never likely to want to be able to find in the future. I really don't see a need for allowing more than 250. It's not as though you get spam or pointless automated messages through PMs (my Hotmail account has 446 unread e-mails ).

Reaching back a bit now, but if I remember correctly, it's not bandwidth that's the issue, it's that as people's in/outboxes get full it starts to slow the whole forum down due to the load on the server increasing. At least it did on older versions of vBB, maybe they've done something about it by this time, but maybe not.

that doesnt make any sense at all ... if anything we should limit the storage space per user by keeping the sum of posts + pms below 6000
I would have thought 200 message slots would be enough for the majority of users? Given it's taken 2 years for someone to ask about it, that's probably true. Admittedly I struggled a bit with that limit, I like to keep interesting PMs if possible (had a few technical discussions over PM). I'd cleaned my inbox twice over before becoming a mod. I didn't know about the saving feature either though.

FTR mods have 10 times the PM limit; I'm currently at ~500 messages.

Small sample below - I never keep my reply. Usually their techy questions, every now and again i get some random insulting PM's although it's been over 6 months since that team did that...

Small incentive to make a contribution to the community

I haven't ever removed any PM sent to me on LFS forum, not even when it was still just small section at RSC, that is because I don't have social problems, I'm genuinely unsocial
Jep, more Slots would definitely be Handy. Altrough the 250 Slots we have now are nice, considering that on most other Forums you have only 100.

well i do think jack has got a point (even though youll never see me publicly admit to it) since i too am getting dangerously close to that 250 limit
tbh about 1/3rd of my pm space is taken up by a ~80 pm long conversation about tyres with todd but i refuse to delete that
Unread 0, Total 18 and I've never deleted any - I don't think there's anything I wanted to receive in the first place though.
I've been conversing back and forth on a nearly daily basis for over a month and a half with a certain team leader; have not deleted any of the PMs (mine or his) and still only have 93 messages.

Of course, I delete everything else anyways; Unless it has something important in it, it gets the recycling bin treatment. I've probably had about 400 in total on this forum, maybe.

Once the business with this team is through, all those messages will be deleted as well. I don't see the need in keeping old PMs?
I always find as soon as I delete them, I need them, so I try yo keep as many as I can.
I just delete all the ones from people I don't like, keeps the total down to single figures.

There should be 10 PM limit for users that have 10000+ posts..

how much was it before then?

250.

An improved PM limit is hardly going to cause people to post more, from memory my last PM was because I was in trouble for something (the first year I joined the forum), but don't hold me to that because I delete PMs once the comms have ended, with the exception of those containing important information, but these days I'll just copy that into a text file.

There isn't really a need for vast PM limits, you just need to clean your room a little better.

I noticed that too. I used to have to delete personal messages, but now I don't have to anymore. Thanks Vic
I mentioned this to Vic in IRC one day and he increased it. I guess he hadn't seen this thread previously.
