Quote from Impreza WRX :Here's what happens when we get our license:

1: 20 question multiple choice test, mainly about what the road signs are and why you shouldn't drink and drive
2: Drive around a parking lot, do a 3 point turn, and go reverse without crashing into anything
3: Park it, "Gratz!", you got a license.

That's it.

Are you serious, is that the only things you have to do to get the lisence in America?
How many % of the people that are taking the lisence doesn`t pass?
Quote from dougie-lampkin :lol like the idea! my suggestion - an actual freakin race sim thats REAL!!! (no black ice for instance!) the reason other sims dont have it is because it aint freakin real!!! REAL tracks dont have black ice, thats what marshalls are hired for, to test the condition of the track. everyone bought lfs for the reality factor, didnt they?

There's realism regarding the reproduction of real race events and realism regarding the laws of physics. It's probably just me but I really don't care about the first one.

And what I find interesting with simulations is that we can do things we couldn't do in real life not because it's physically impossible but because it would be too costly and/or too dangerous!
Yes that is for real. And yes there are people that don't pass even that. These kind of people I wouldn't trust with a mechanical pencil!

Thats insane!
Here in Norway, on the final driving exam, there is like 50% that fails first time. I belive this is not only caused of bad drivers, but because the last exam can be redicilous hard.

The lisence here in Norway is like this :

A therotical test, where like 3 of 4 fails at their first attemt.
Then there is like, well at least 8 times you have to drive with a teacher.
Then you take courses like nightdriving, how to drive on slippery roads, on a test course and some other stuff
A long distance driver, you drive for many hours
AND in the end the driving exam, do a little error, like braking too hard or to accelerate too fast can be enough to fail, very hard. And in the end it probally takes aprox some months, maybe even a half year before you get the lisence.

And I belived this was the standar way to get lisence :/

Oh and btw, it costs you almost 20 000 NKR (norwegian krones).
Sounds nice?
No..

Pretty much how it is here in Pennsylvania as well. No mandatory training at all. You can get driver's education in high school, but all that amounts to is road signs and the laws of the road. No training on how to actually drive is available.

About the most indepth training that pertains to actual driving would be....

- Put it in "D", which is drive to go forward
- Put it in "R" for reverse
- wear your seat belt
- look both ways before pulling out onto the road.
- use your turn signals
- use your mirrors often.

I think that's about it. See, nothing pertaining to actually controlling a heavy piece of machinery that you will be moving at a high rate of speed. The training comes the first winter after mom and dad allow you to drive when you go to the closed mall parking lot with your friends and have fun .

Very serious, and quite a few % don't pass. They can't pass the question/answer part because there are about a million road signs and laws regarding school busses and stuff.

Driving over here isn't really a privilege any more. It's a necessity. There is a lot more rural area then there is urban and you can't expect everyone to be able to bicycle the 30 miles to work every day.

WTF...?!

Even to get my CBT license (which only allows me to drive my bike as a LEARNER for 2 years on a 50cc bike) takes a whole day of training
Ok, then we have answered that, Americans are really bad drivers..
Well not completely true, but it`s insane that they can call the a lisence test?

Why is it so? Why do you let people who obviously can`t drive, drive?
Do you want to die behind a wheel or something?

A lax test doesn't mean you can't drive, merely that no-one has ever really checked...
Quote from Jakg :A lax test doesn't mean you can't drive, merely that no-one has ever really checked...

which given how many fail in other countries with proper tests and training (norway finland germany et al) and given that its unlikely that americans are born better drivers than europeans means most of them cant
i guess this at least explains why no one in america knows how to turn right ... no one ever taught them how to

First, there's no way I would take a 50 cc bike out on the road. That's insane.

Second, talking bikes, if you have a valid driver's license, which we've proven is far too easy, all you do is walk in, pay $7, and you get a motorcycle permit. You are limited to not riding after dark, not allowed do ride on the interstate highway (4 lane), and not allowed a passenger. Oh, and in a few states without helmet laws, you have to wear a helmet until you have 2 years experience and are 21 years of age, I believe. Of course, as long as you have that motorcycle learner's permit, you are allowed to ride any bike that you want from a Vespa to the VTX1800 beast to any blazingly fast sportbike you want. Now THAT is scary!

Heh, That's one way to slowly thin out the population...
Driver's Ed ain't that much better.

1: Learn the signs
2: Learn why drinking and driving is bad
3: Learn how to drive a car with an auto
4: Driving at night
5: Why you should not drink and drive
6: How to drive in bad weather
7: Drink + drive = evil
8: Jump start a car the right way
9: how to handle an over / understeering RWD car
10: Take a guess... yep, a section on drinking and driving is bad
11: Actually driving the student driver car

1-4 basic stuff, can be had easy
6,7 Important to know, because NO ONE actually does this right
9 because in Florida, EVERY ONE drives a Truck or an SUV and no one will ever drive a front wheel drive car
2,5,7,10 it's the biggest and longest section of driver's ed that gets drilled into your brain with a plasma cutter, but people still do it all the time
11 yay

Notice the complete lack of car control for FWD and 4WD, and how to drive a manual!
I have a bad weather story for you.

Last month I was doing a last minute delivery of Chinese Food (because there are people that eat dinner in the wee hours of the morning ) and it was raining. I turn left onto US1, push it down, and get up to speed. I am met shortly thereafter with a wall of brake lights. !!!BRAKE!!! as hard as a Cavalier that has crappy weak stupid poorly thought GM brakes can stop, and I find myself doing 25 MPH in a 45 MPH zone! Why? Because a MILE AHEAD someone was in the right lane with their four way flashers on. NO ONE is in the left lane, which is clear and void of any hazards besdes a little rain. Nobody has the guts or the balls to attempt a pass because it's raining some. It wasn't blinding rain, it wasn't a downpour, the Keys doesn't flood unless there is a big hurricane that pushes the OCEAN into the island, and it wasn't windy like a hurricane either! What is up with that?!

"OMG it's raining I have to go 5 MPH or I might hydroplane and crash into a tree and die a horrible death!!"
still better than ours ... my theoretical drivers ed was mostly about funny stories of driving tests
