Lags in Multiplayer Races
Hey there,

I downloaded the demo of live for speed a few days ago and I'm really thinking about getting a S2 license.

But there is one question.
The cars in Multiplayer races stutter pretty much, which is propably caused by lags. I'm using a wireless connection to get online which is not so good, I know. But I've also played GTR2 online very much and never had any lags while playing. It was always very smooth in GTR2, the opponent cars almost didn't stutter and I was able to drive very close to opponents without having fear of crashing into them.
I just wanted to ask if the demo-servers are worse than the servers for s1 and s2 and I only experience those problems because the demo-servers aren't very good...

I just wanted to ask that before I put some holes through my walls in order to get a network cable to my pc.

And as I said, I only experienced those problems with the LFS demo, I never hat any of these lags with GTR2.

Thank you all.

Ah and those stuttering cars are propably not caused by my computer, cause it should handle lfs pretty well and I have absolutely no stuttering in offline races.

I also play LFS using router ( laptop ) and I've no problems. Check your firewall, or other applications that can slow down its speed.

lfs probably got the best netcode you will find out there. of course you still get some glitches now and then but i can drive side by side with anybody from my part of the world without any fear of a lag crash. i'm also on wireless, if you have a good connectivity and stable data transfer you shouldn't get any lag.

the multiplayer experience is the same in demo and s2 (technical side) by the way. did you check the ping to the server your racing? everything under 100ms should be ok to drive on, heck you can even race without a lot of problems on 200ms servers.

S2 is well worth the money you pay for it, if your still unsure go and watch some videos with online action from various races and leagues. here some links:

or just go to youtube and do a search for lfs

Thanks for the answers.
I watched those videos and found another one that totally convinced me.
Here it is, really awsome vid

After I saw those vids I had to buy a license immediately...

All I need now is the g25, I'll get that next month propably. Till then I'll have to play with my old Microsoft wheel.

See you guys online.

Thanks
While on the topic -- what exactly does "multiplayer optimization" or whatever it's called actually do? Does that affect lag?

I think that option is for PC performace. It hides cars that you don't need to see, to increase FPS. I have it turned off because when making movies, having cars randomly appearing does not look good.

Actually the reason I asked was because I heard you mention it in a live broadcast a while ago, asking someone to turn it off. Cheers for clearing it up for me.
