What Car Do you Race ?

I know but the whole slalom thing looks rather boring as u don't really speed allot and compete with others on a racetrack

I think when im older im gonna look for a small FWD Racecar to drive on trackdays

How does this looks?
Renault 5, ready to race and equipped with the following

2.0 liter laguna 8 valve with oil cooler
OMP rollcage, well mounted
OMP Renault sport seats with "ears" and FIA aproval
4 points FIA aproved Sabelt belts
"plastic windows" (dunno what its called in english lol, not real..) ramen
Devil damper(exhaust damper?)
Biltstein Cup dampers
500 pond veren voor
16" inch OZ rims
All stripped down and weights 820Kg with full tank
Price without slicks € 3.500,--
That's a lot for the money but I'd ask yourself whether you want it to be a road car or pure track car? If you want it to be a road car I'd go for bucket seats without high sides and 4 point harnesses and maybe a limited front rollcage/sidebars. If you want a pure track car go for 6 point harnesses and the high sided seats ('ears'), they're very good at preventing very serious injuries in a heavy T-bone or a hard hit side on to the barrier, thankfully both of these are rare though, for road use they limit visibility too much. I wouldn't fancy a home built conversion and would question whether all that power actually improves such a car.

If you want a cheap road car for trackdays it may be better to look for a stock hatch type race car, championship regulations are normally tight on the lower classes so you know you've got pretty standard parts that'll be far easier to sort out than an engine conversion that's probably past its best.
Its pure track car, not for the streets
oh lol, the guy would give 15" race rims with new slicks for the same price instead of the sixteeners
ICC now KZ2 shifter kart.
dammm always wanted to try a shifter kart.

I'd ask yourself what's the point in having slicks for track day use, they're some what less forgiving, you'll have to carry wets and you'll be far more likely to bend the car (or burn out a set of wets) in damp but not wet enough for wets conditions. If you went for road tires you'd save cost, probably tire wear and time and effort spent changing them all for the sake of lapping a bit faster.

I agree. I only ever use slicks on qualifying. For the races, i only use slicks on rare occasions. Apart from that, i use advan a048's. I would reccomend them highly. There semi-slicks, last quite long providing your not driving like a cock, and there road legal, so providing the car is road legal, you can drive home on them too.
I'd second that. Whilst slicks aren't that much less forgiving - indeed they are pretty damn progressive and predictable - they are more expensive, generally softer, rubbish in the wet (trust me on this!), so you'll need to carry a second set of wheels, they're not street legal so you WILL need to trailer it everywhere, and they're much easier to puncture, especially in a grubby paddock during a trackday.

Road legal tyres, even if they are 'semi-slicks' are much more resiliant and reliable, not that much slower, much more fun (bigger slides at slightly slower speeds), and much cheaper, plus they are reasonably decent in the wet (although standing water will give a few clenches ).

If the car was designed to run on slicks, then use slicks. If it wasn't (and it isn't) then don't bother for track days.
so semi-slicks or the way to go on that thing?
lol at AJP, you sentence always start with " I'd ask yourself "

IMO, yes. As i said, i use semi-slicks almost all the time, and i do actually enjoy them more than slicks. The things with slicks is that there great for qualifying and what have you, but unless your running a SERIOUSLY powerful car, then there is no real need for them unless you have some major competition.

If i was you, i would go for some good semi-slicks, and some lightweight wheels. That way, once the race is over, you can drive back on them providing the car is road legal and the tyres have enough tread on them. Or, you could just have a few sets of slicks on another set of wheels, and use them for racing, and then use normal road tyres to drive back on. I tryed this for a few races. Proved very expensive

Quote from keiran :Hopefully I'll be sprinting & hill climbing alongside my Dad in this beast (Locust kit car)! Currently car isn't ready, the 1.3 fordy cross flow is out and a Suzuki GSXR 1000cc is now mounted in it. Dad reckons it should have about 170bhp behind it now!

170hp, that should be plenty Nice. FlyinMiata (www.flyinmiata.com) in the US are the official US distributor of the Westfield that's based on an MX5 Miata, and they're sticking one of their turbocharged Miata engines in one of the Westfields. 260rwhp no problem, 300+ if they add a couple of parts and turn the boost up

As for cars I race...

First pic: I have been autocrossing my '90 Miata in stock class for the last couple of years. Lots of body roll but lots of fun Not the best picture but it's the best one of me driving right at the limit with a bunch of body roll :P

Second pic: This is me driving a friends '97 Miata. He has a turbo kit from FlyinMiata, and the car makes 260rwhp. Great car, absolute BLAST to drive. Very little lag and great powerband, not at all peaky, which is perfect for autox. I won the CSP class at the Canadian National Autoslalom in this car last year.

Third Pic: A friends 996 GT3. Been an honour to drive this car, but so far it's only happened in damp or wet conditions! Doh! This year he has told me I have to drive it in the dry so he can see how much I can beat him by when it's not raining, and I have graciously accepted! This pic is the owner driving the car, not me.

I have raced a bunch of other cars in autocross too, including a 450rwhp Nissan 240 (), but these are the only cars I have raced on a somewhat regular basis.

Wow! You race a Mercedes? Or is it just to show what your kart looks like?

Michael, you do know I'm going to haffto steal your Miata one day and go Autocross it up and kick your ass
i race xf gti

Got a shot of my mates 125cc 6 speed gearbox kart a couple weeks back, has like 45bhp!! No. 33 to be exact. Absolutely nuts, I've driven a few different classes but nothing comes close to that. The acceleration once it hits the power band is insane, as soon as it hit like 9000rpm it rocketed off. Such a smooth gearbox as well, really nice to use. Mate says it hits about 90-95mph by the end of the straight. Had to be raining so didn't want to give it too much welly around the corners cause he didn't want to burn up his wets, needs them for this weekend.

Don't think I could race any other kart class if I was to get back into it!!

KZ2s are great fun to drive, awesome in fact, but lack the purity of experience you get with a 100cc. You simply can't beat 20,000rpm

Mind the first time I drove a KZ2 was back to back with an Aixro XR50 hitting out more than 50hp... helllooooo.. both incredible!

It's a shame really we don't have the tracks to race them properly like over in France, Spain, and Italy coz I'd be joining ya!!!
Ah, i remember this thread. I just read through it again, and lol'd at Sam and his bike "crash".

Anyhow, i don't race the Mini no more. I stopped at the beginning of this year. Most of my funds are going into a workshop i run, and i don't have time for it nowadays. As of now, the Mini just sits in the garage. I made it road legal and used it for fun little drives every now and then, but even after 15 minutes, the noise from the lack of carpet/sound deadening gets annoying (Yes i know. I'm a big girl. ). I'm now in two minds whether to take the cage and race seats out, and put a sensible interior in there, keep it as is and use it for trackdays, or sell it. I've had a few offers from family and friends and i get tempted, but every time i get in it and drive it, i decide to hold onto it a little longer.

We shall see what happens.
Well you missed the Mini Action day @ Combe yesterday then. Redditch mini club went as did my bro's with their mates. I wanted to go but i dont have a mini & they would not confirm if there would any non mini sessions that day.
Nor would they sell me an advanced ticket, bit of a downer tbh.

On topic i hillclimb my fiesta & sometimes my dads classic formula ford.
