Hello there,

I'm pretty new to LFS, been playing the demo for a few days, and I enjoyed it so much I've just bought the S1 license.

The problem is I can't find any server to play : when I select Multiplayer > S1, then "Display list of hosts" the list is desperately empty !

I can't believe there's not a single S1 server out there ! I checked a bit everything, the list of hosts populates when the "Demo" button is selected, I just can't find any S1 game ...

I run LFS S2 ALPHA 0.5Y under WinXP, everything else works fine, I can ping the master server, etc. ...

Any clue about what to do next ?

Upgrade to Y20 so that you can get onto CTRA Race 1.

Also, you can (IIRC) get onto S2 servers that have S1 content

Buy S2.

Sorry to be so cynical, but S2 is where most of the LFS population resides. The server choice is quite good for most hours of the day.

Sure it costs a bit more, bit it's still 100% worth it.

So here is a quick summary of what I did : I was indeed able to display 4 (!) empty servers by checking the appropriate checkbox, but no player eventually came to join me on one of them
(I didn't wait more than 5 minutes).

Then I gave a try to CTRA race 1, installed Join2LFS and ... "Host has a different game code".

My guess is that CTRA provides Y18 server, and I appear to have a Y20 client (not sure about what it means, though). So do you reckon I should try to downgrade LFS to Y18 ? (not sure about how to to that either ...).

As for the last comment, I will probably upgrade to S2 in a few days/weeks, after a quick look at BrowseForSpeed the number of avalaible server is certainly huge compared to S1. It's a pity one can't benefit from the S1 version (since LFS is definitely so much more a multiplayer game than a solo one).

I understand this has nothing to do with the makers of the game (and much with the whole community switching to S2), but then what's the point in selling S1 if it's not worth playing ?

Luckily it's not more expensive to upgrade to S1 then to S2 than to go directly for S2.

I've wondered the same thing myself, and have never heard a satisfactory answer. It seems somewhat deceptive to new customers, because it isn't clear when one buys S1 that there are virtually zero active servers for it.

SilverArrows, thank you so much for your last remark : it made me realize I had missed the whole point about test patches (actually my LFS was vanilla Y version ... I feel stupid ... :schwitz

Now I have roughly a dozen of S1 servers, which is more than satisfactory for my needs right now (and should help me wait a few week before going for S2 ...).

Maybe it would help newcomers like me to mention somewhere on the official pages that it's mandatory to go for the test release ?

CTRA Race 1 and Bump & Jump are always on S1 combos. They'll always have lots of racers (If ever they're empty, join and people will come on), and good clean racing. Worth a look
