The online racing simulator
Major Improvement Request - comment if you like it
Hi guys!

First, let me say that LFS is Awesome, Good, Great, Cool, Best, and I love it! I'm sure you love it too. Thank you for creating this great game!

I have been thinking about it for a while, and want to share my idea in hope that some day it will become a reality. Imagine all the great graphics, Phisics and racing experience in LFS and put it on a large awesome map where you you have bigger scenery and lanscape, where you pass over bridges and climb twisted mountains, where you go through tunnels and rush through tight mud roads through forests. Imagine going down hill with 2 lanes steep with a sharp right turn in the end and passing over a tight 1 lane bridge to rush into a tunnel, imagine rainy day where road is slippery and icy day when you slide around. Imagine Jeeps with hight suspension and massive wheels throwing mud as the pass through the forest... etc..

I guess.. All I'm asking for a few changes in phisical logic changes in game to allow cars to jump, maps that are much biger and scenic, and a few rally cars or a jeep or two... It would be so awesome...
What you suggest requires a substantial reworking of the graphics engine. It will take a long time, and Scawen would have to drop everything he is doing and concentrate on that exclusively. It's not going to happen and 99% of LFS'ers don't care for it anyway.
sounds like cruiser shit to me
Would it be fun? Yes.
Does it have anything to do with racing? No.
Does this have even the tiniest chance of being implemented? NO.
It could possibly be possibly implemented, IF a route was selectable for a race? As in, the whole map isn't open, but on setup you can choose a route. But it wouldn't be from a pre-defined list, like the current tracks. You could select on a map exactly which roads the racers have to go, and the routes going off of those roads are blocked with railings or tyres or whatever...

Possibly not exactly what LFS is about (track racing), but it would still be awesome. Or at least if the dev tools are ever released at S3, then it could be done

It's a brilliant thought though, I'm fairly sure even the hardcore racer fanboys amongst us would love that. Imagine the endless combinations :hyper:

As Scawen has explained before, S2 physics/graphics wouldn't support this...But maybe it will be re-written for S3
flymike91, no man, it's not cruiser shlt, it's a longer map, with bigger track and it's rally.

It's definitely worth it even if the engine will need to be redefined. Lets talk about ways to achieve it and not why it's hard to do...

I dont think the size of the map itself should be the problem, you know how they have it in games with big maps, the sections load as player approaches them... I wish there was a development kit for maps, I'd definitely contribute.

That would be interesting, load a new section of track every now and then, perfect to distract you from the race itself. I really don't know if the loading would work in multiplayer.

There is no developers kit for maps, and hopefully never will be. LFS doesn't need people "contributing".
While the idea is good in theory, I'm not sure it suits the track racing that LFS is designed for.

Massive elevation changes and tunnels and the like I'm 100% behind. But it shouldn't verge into NFS where you have shortcuts and areas where crashing is likely - if you have 2 seperate roads joining together to enter a narrow tunnel, that's exactly what would happen. That's not racing, that's carnage. Now if it was just road markings then it wouldn't make any difference since the racing line would cross them anyway.
It's guaranteed that long point-to-point races - or rallies - (think hillclimbs, original NFS, I liked especially the Alpine stages :nod will not make it to S2 final due to the complete reworking of the rendering system at the very least. It is racing though and very much hope to see something I'd like to see in S3.
You and me both. If LFS could do rally stages like RBR did, AND keep the road racing strong (with point to point included) I would never need another PC racer.

But I would need a new wheel
The infamous Rally Pack!
