I updated my comp some months ago but haven't kept up with the development after that. Iirc you don't get much power boost from quad cores unless you multi-multitask. Even in games the differencies were pretty small. As for 900$ to spend on mobo and processor, you can pick pretty much anything for that money. But I'd guess after the 400-500 $ mark the benefits are very small sompared to the added costs. The psu is good, should be silent but for the same specs you could get something cheaper as well...

That's the proc + mobo + RAM? That'd be cool! But anyway I'm not planning to buy until January. I need to spend on some stuff for Christmas.

I would say get a better graphics card if you have $2000 to spend. I paid $360 for the 280 and it is loads faster than the 8800 I have in the bottom slot

If you plan to play games then you should definitely invest in a really good video card. You say that you want your computer to last for a few years, but keep in mind that the 8800 is a 2-year old card. You're better off buying a more recent video card.

That i7 processor is overkill for just gaming unless you are running a SLI setup. Will you be using this for other things beside gaming? (video encoding, etc..)

Since you're buying this in a couple months time, I suggest you don't think about it right now. Let the prices for Core i7 drop, then we'll talk. At the moment it's just too expensive, so expensive that you'll spend $1000 on the CPU, motherboard, and RAM. If you're gonna be gaming a lot on it then you should go for a Crossfire/SLI setup of video cards, as Core i7 can finally push multiple cards to the limit.

But like I said, there's no point in talking about prices this early because they're sure to change after the holidays, especially if AMD releases the new Phenom 2, it'll push the Core i7 prices down.

Nothing is overkill. You just won't have to upgrade as soon.

Hate to burst the bubble there but you've coupled an LGA1366 board with an LGA775 processor. Bit of a no-no, since it won't work

Oh damn, I forgot to relink to a 775 board when I was making that post. I started putting links to an i7 build in, but since it was too expensive, I went to 775.

Is there a specific reason why u want a 20" LCD?
Because I would certainly spend 600-800$ on a monitor(24-26" IPS or PVA panel) and use the remaining 1200-1400$ to build a more then adequate computer.

If u spend alot on the pc hardware or not it will be outdated in 2-3years, while a good monitor will last u over double that long and provide more enjoyment at the same time.
Basically it's never worth the insane rise in costs to get the latest in Pc-land, compared to the extra performance and lifespan u will get out of it.

Well, we have two computers here and both are 17'' CTR big ass ones. We had them since 2004 and they always did fine. I just wanted something bigger than 17'' and 20'' sounded right. I dont really need a 34'' monitor.

i have a 22" envision monitor and it rocks,rly is nice and cheap too it was like 300$ a year ago
