Computer help... [Solved, thanks]
Hey guys. I got my new computer yesterday and went straight installing the Windows XP there because i didnt get any program (Linux/Windows/Mac) with the comp. Unfortunately i threw 2 days ago my old computer where was the Product key and i dont have it anymore anywhere. So im stuck there...
I just burned Linux Ubuntu on my CD after going to shop 2 times because Nero doesnt burn DVD-R types for some odd reason

How can i install the Linux now? (I've already changed order to startup CD first, then sata; no changes there)

Most likely thing is that the DVD you burnt isn't bootable.

Ok, the media might not be bootable then. How did you burn it? The easiest way to turn a bootable iso with Nero is to just open the iso file up directly with Nero (i.e. right click -> Open With -> Nero). I have quite a lot of bootable Linux LiveCDs burnt onto DVD-Rs and they work OK.

Burnt with NERO yes. heres the log file (finnish part is unreadable for you) but most of it is..

You get the same error as before or a different one or nothing at all when you try to boot it?
at Nero Startsmart and choose "burn image to disk", you did it that way?
Isn't there a windows installer for ubuntu available? Or does that too require a cd?

ehm.. they say its 4-6 weeks to ship me the disc so i can install it

yeah, all same.

@ Scrabby - yes..

Typical unluck for me once again
Have you verified the Linux iso after you downloaded it? If not, use a program like this to generate the MD5 hash of the iso file then compare it to the MD5 hash which should be posted next to the download link on the Linux site. If those match then your image is OK, if they don't then there is corruption in the image. Also, did you verify the burn(s) with NERO?

i did verify the burn(s) with NERO, but im not sure if i've verified the linux ISO, thanks for help i go look at it

@ hyntty - thanks, but i need to get all things on CD because i need to move them to other computer, this thing only installs it only on own computer

E: Amp, it always crashes every time i open it

Stupid vista :S
There is (quite unlikely likely) possiblility that the DVD-drive in your PC where you intend to install Ubuntu is faulty and refuses to read bootable CD's properly (it actually might be some odd BIOS issue too). I've seen this problem before. So when you download the Ubuntu ISO image and burn it as other guys described here, check whether any other PC can boot off this CD (if you don't start the installation process itself nothing will happen to your data).

EDIT: Are you really sure that you are burning the actual ISO image and NOT just the files this ISO contains? I briefly read the log.txt you posted and there are few clues which make me thinking you did it the wrong way. "TAO burning mode, multisession enabled, disc hasn't been finalized"... any bootable CD should have exactly opposite parameters (DAO, no multisession and it must be finalized) in order to work properly...

uhh, so i had to use multisession on? i thought if i put it on then XP doesnt boot it...

E2: youre right, i actually havent burned the actual ISO image, burned the files that ISO contained. But im veery confused with this stuff. Could you tell me how to do that? :dunce:
Just follow this guide, it applies to Nero 5 but it should be the same in Nero 7.

+1

Exactly what I was thinking.

Imgburn works perfectly for creating bootable installation discs from ISO files.

It took me ages to find it too, so many other (free) programmes just copy the ISO as is on to the CD/DVD without actually extracting the files in it.
