Overheating batteries?!
Well, here's the story: I was watching tv tonight, holding a remote in one hand when i suddenly felt like it wen't a bit warm. I thought that it would be my hand heating it up at first, so i put remote on the table.
After 10-15 minutes (wanted to change volume) i took remote again and it felt extremely hot, so i dropped it, was a bit suprised, probably thatswhy i spilled it. Batteries rolled out, but since i've taped them inside (i've lost cover ages ago), it seemed a bit impossible. After i took a closer look it seemed like batteries, or at least one of them, had melted through the tape. I also attached a picture of it, taken few minutes ago.
Is it possible them to burn up until it bursts into flames? I'm afraid to leave batteries on even when i leave home now .

Any ideas what may cause this?

Change the batteries. Even in the best (fail) case they could leak and it's no pumpkin juice inside.

Wrong type of batteries? Although I can't really think how that could happen.

Perhaps the remote itself has an electrical fault.
Add a fan with heatsink.
Check the polarity of the batteries? NUmerous times I've put them in the wrong way round (i.e + to - ) and thats caused them to heat up quite a bit!

Alkaline

oh...
licking them clean was no good?

Quote from pacesetter :Alkaline

DEFINITELY an acid in batteries

EDIT: Or is that car batteries? :S

EDIT 2: Small Batteries are Alkaline.
Indeed, potassium hydroxide isn't very nice, although its actually the complete opposite to an acid, it is a strong alkali, although the results are much the same if you get it on you, it can still burn.

It doesn't seem to burn the skin too badly if you get it on your hands, just a little slimy, just don't put your fingers near your mouth or face in general as it stinks and is bad for you if ingested, and for gods sake nowhere near your eyes, that stuff hurts like hell!

Car batteries, acid, AA batteries, not so, it is alkali.
My sister had that happen in her camera.
We still don't know how it happened, but it could be that the 2 parts that deliver the energy weren't seperated anymore.
So if those batteries were fully charged, they would lose all of their energy in a lot less time, generating heat.

Then it wouldnt just work.

Havnt experienced any failed batteries myself, but if there is any fail. Change them because even 1.5v can fire up the flaming banana.

My guess would be you forgot that the duct tape is actually conductive and the heat comes simply from the electric current discharged from the batteries...
Did you charge unchargeable batteries?
i once powered a discman for hours by a 9V battery, until it started burning a hole in my pocket.
protip: dont short your batteries
protip2: hot batteries are great for frostbitten fingers after driving or flying some rc thing
