I just watch vB protect it's self and the server. A little error page pop'ed up saying that the server was very busy and unable to handle the request at this time. I find that both very interesting that 99 guests are causing that much traffic with 38 sign'ed in members and that the error was displayed in the first place. Still, kinda cool to watch.

Also, vB is coming out with version 4 soon, and if you have not seen a beta of it already, go take a look. It's pretty slick from the admin end of it, and it looks like everything is going to be editable from a style standpoint. Very excited, I just got my license upgrade today to the 4.0 suite, cant wait!

It's done on server load, not traffic.
The load value where vB will show that message is editable in the admin panel, or it can be turned off altogether.

there was a mini DDOS last night from this site : url removed - i think ppl got bad ideas.
So you didn't see many users, but there was just one that was hammering so much it soaked up all availavle DB connections which caused vB to show that error message. This site is now blocked and I have mailed the owner.

oh great, they just continued, with three other IPs.

following up, apparently it's some sort of javascript bug in FF3.6 (Gecko at least, as i've seen Safari as well amongst the hitters) the site owner says.
The forum's blocked now at least.
