Anyone know any free icon making programs? I just want to take a transparent .PNG file and turn it into an icon for my desktop and such. Want to clean up my computer and sort out stuff properly for once, and everything I find is either severely limited or it throws a "TRIAL" overtop of the icon graphic.

Why not use The Gimp? You can save any file as an .ico (icon) file...right out the box.

How about a plugin for Photoshop or any other photo editing program? I've not checked but theres bound to be some out there.

i think so, you just have to make them as different layers... might want to google that though for the layer names and stuff.

yes, it does, Just separate layers (guessing the same way it would be in PS)

Hmm.. I've found a plugin for PS, but it seems clunky and the end result isn't very crisp (unlike my image, which is and is properly scaled).

My only hesitation with installing the GIMP is my familiarity with PS and the fact that I like to keep as little on my system as I can (which reminds me, I really need to do some digital spring cleaning....).

I had come across that one a couple days ago, but the outcome wasn't very nice. It didn't seem to maintain alpha transparencies well. I've come across Sib Icon Editor. I tried the PS plugin from the same guys, but wasn't able to get what I wanted. It has a trial period, but with a bit of fumbling I was able to get a nicely rendered result. Now I'm off to the races!
