File Synchronization Software?
Basically I need some software to sync files between my PC & my laptop via LAN.

At the moment, I use synctoy - it's setup so that I open it, click "Sync" and it compares all my work / pictures / videos. It then copies the newest across whichever way it needs to go, renames any renamed files etc.

Unfortunately, it sems to hang on a certain folder with my new laptop - made a new folder, and moved the pictures around but still it always hangs on something.

It needs to be done via the network (I doubt my connection would like 200+GB of files being transferred...), and I need to be able to select a folder, but deselect subfolders (i.e. I want everything in "My Videos", but not my films)

Any suggestions? I'm happy with SyncToy, but i've tried adding / re-adding the folder but no joy
Could it be a particular file its having trouble as opposed to the folder thats causing this mate, finding which one could take ages mind you.

Is there anything unusual about the folder or the files on which it keeps hanging? Can you enable debugging information or view logs / system events? How long have you left it hanging before killing it (and how long did it normally take to run before you created the folder it keeps hanging on)?

Just a folder with a few pictures in there, ~5 MB or so. Transfers the first ~10GB of pictures no problems.

Each picture takes >1 second to do, and i've left it for 20 minutes and it gets no further.

As it is, all the files are on both drives anyway - even running it in "preview" mode (i.e. just the comparisons) and it hangs there.

No longs related to Synctoy.

Are there any differences between permissions on the files?

What version are you using? The few posts I've read about it all seem to be >= 2.0 and mention File -> View Log to check the log details. Also, the post by Ping Lu from here has more logging information, including this:

Quote from Ping Lu :SyncToy supports a verbose level of logging for helping troubleshoot issues you may be having during synchronization operatons. To enable verbose logging, you'll need to manually edit the configuration file named SyncToy.config under the SyncToy install location (by default installed to "%PROGRAMFILES%\SyncToy 2.1"). Open the SyncToy.config file in your favorite text editor and change the value property of the SyncToyTraceLevel switch from "Info" to "Verbose", e.g.:

add name="SyncToyTraceLevel" value="Verbose"

Ok, i'll have a look in the morning thanks
I use dropbox. May not be exactly what you want, but I love it, it also has a LAN function.

Dropbox doesn't do what I need / isn't large enough. Don't want anything internet based.

Tried the Verbose function, but didn't help as it just logs that it started, then I stopped it - it doesn't fail, it just stops, so theres nothing in the log
Why not to use rsync?
Because unix tools aren't the answer to everything and generally have the usability as a dildo with nails hanging out of them.

But Shadowwww, if you wish to use rsync, fill your boots, but don't complain when you're bleeding from your vagina.
Quote from E.Reiljans :Why not to use rsync?

Yes its the correct tool for the task. Wrap it in a script to keep track of what you want to (*.avi, *.mpg, pr0n* etc) and limit the bandwidth so you can do other stuff while syncing.

There are many variants of rsync, like cygwin and some native ports.

Let those who do not understand better use crappy tools if they like.

New laptop, exactly the same problem, same folders as well.

How weird.

Think I fixed it last time by re-installing.... I think...

(and I couldn't get on with rsync - SyncToy is perfect (...when it works...))

Turns out re-installing it and then leaving it *aaaages* at the stuck files seems to make it work
