back in october there was an interesting discussion about framerate vs steering lag. i was sure the two were totally independent in LFS but of course that is wrong as you can feel sometimes the laggy steering in a full grid start.

Unless you have a 120Hz monitor, more than that does nothing for you

Untrue. Your eyes do not see a difference but when you have an interactive image that ultimately you dictate you notice a big difference in control input latencies etc.

so i got to thinking would FFB really be better at 144hz? i had seen some 144hz lcd monitors a while back but it was too expensive. but if FFB in LFS would be better...

so i bought one and i can tell you, it really is much different. not only is the scenery moving by smoother, but more importantly the suspension movements feel much clearer and the traction breaking and regaining is much more immediate. as to whether this matters to you, that depends

so is it true "real men only need 20 fps"? well if someone can get a WR at 20 fps then that is a real man lol
I thought LFS force feedback was generated at 100Hz, the same as the main physics loop. You can't really get it any smoother without running the physics faster or you wouldn't have more data to calculate it from.

Also, this is probably on par with the fidelity available on most wheels over USB (given that USB, by default in Windows, samples at 125Hz).

As for low frame-rate problems, I would imagine if your game was CPU bound (would need old hardware) then it may interfere with force feedback resolution.
FFB rate is definitely affected by the frame rate in LFS. The difference between 60 fps and 120 fps is noticeable.
It must run on the same thread as the rendering then (assuming LFS is threaded at all).
my hunch is there is no better solution to vsync than "wait for refresh". in a single-threaded program that is literally a CPU wait.

this post is for anyone who is undecided about buying one of these pricey screens. if there was no difference in feel i would be very regretful of my purchase.
