Vista Beta 2
Has anyone used / using it? I downloaded the 64bit version last night and burning it off to DVD as i write this post but i dno if i should install it.

Formatting my HDD and installing an OS aint a problem for me, done it countless times but is the Beta worth it? My mate all the games he tried, worked on his. BF2, HL2, LFS, C&C etc and quite a few programs. Also what worries me is that becuase is new, your bound to get some dick trying to hack into it and i dont really feel like being that candidate.

So yeh, to install or not to install, that is the question. Also if you are using it, what protection you got like anti-virus, spyware, firewall etc. Apparently AVG (free or full, cant remember which) dont work on Vista.

Cheers, Dave

Well it depend on your PC specification I would say.Windows Vista need a lot of memory.I would say 1GB is minimla for smooth work and 2GB preffered. What CPU you have?
For what Vista offers, which is more eye candy, the extra workload and money needed for hardware does not make the upgrade worthwile. I bash people using themeing systems on XP, but I'd rather have that then the bull Vista uses. The OS alone has the same specs as most games. I like my OS to run in the background unnoticed, I don't want it to eat into half of what my system has to draw fancy crap I don't need.

Feckin' A! Windows Vista (or Fista as I like to call it referring it to a certain sexual act) will be the fattest, most obnoxious bloatware ever to hit the market. Yuck...
#5 - ORION
One of my uni mates installed it on hist laptop (Centrino 1.6 - 512MB RAM - x300 mobility (half the speed of a 9600M) - freaking slow HDD), and it was running better than I expected, even if you have a couple of programs open.
However, its quite silly that the screen saver is stressing the GPU to the max. Baisically, all the hardware is fully loaded even in idle...
I didn't see any reason to upgrade when I had a go with a beta2 CTP before it was released to the public on the MS site. It does everything XP does but nothing more that I particularly need. I don't have a super-duper PC and even with Aero off and everything else off too in the GFX section it was a bit sluggish in general.

Why would you want to use Vista now? because
- it's new
- it's got IE7
- to test its security
- nice GUI
- WMP11

but you can get a theme (although not Aero), IE7 and WMP11 are obtainable if you're really desperate, and as a bonus it doesn't melt your PC down to a smoldering heap of metal when you leave it idling on your workdays

Stick to XP unless you're into always having the latest technology updates, even if they're still in beta, is my recommendation.

I agree with you there.

A couple of my friends are running it, one has an athlon64 3700+ 1GB ram 2x6600GTs etc and apparently it was using no less than around 700mb soon after bootup - GREAT

I totally agree. I tried the Vista beta 2 for a few hours and switched right back in to XP. Vista just eats way too much resources.
Well i've got:
AMD Sepmron64bit 3200+ (2.0GHz)
40GB @ 7200rpm HDD
1GB DDR400 (PC3200)
256mb ATi RADEON x800 GTO (PCI-Express)

The main things Vista needs and i semi swamp it.
I remember saying the same when 95, 98 and XP came out, bottom line is, we will all upgrade to the latest OS at some point....

That said, I can never understand why anyone other than dev's would want to install a beta OS...

To see what's new? It's good to try out Vista also because Explorer (not the internet browser) is so different than in XP. When I'll have a better PC and Vista final is out, I know I won't be totally lost at trying to figure out how to use everything as I've already learned it in the beta.

But those people who use beta operating systems daily as their only OS, that I don't understand.

Dan,

The difference being is when XP came out and the respective 9x systems came out, large ammounts of people had hardware which was well over the specs, Vista however is overly bloated, from memory XP is 2,000% bloated, and that is a little system heavy, so how much bloat does Vista need?
Lets just hope Vista pushes games developers onto Linux!

95 was created because NT was a resource hog. 98 and ME were developements from there, and by that time hardware had caught up for NT5 (2000). I much prefer 2000 to XP, however it's nowhere near as secure, nor does it run games well, so XP I use. With the classic start menu and classic look, of course. And I've removed IE, WMP, MM2, System Restore and all the other rubbish that comes with it.

My main gripes with XP are that the "slipstreamed" install process installs everything, so you have to take it off again afterwards, and it's still bloaty. I can get it down to about 800MB without the service packs (plus swap file). Why does everything have to eat MB/GB these days? LFS excluded, of course.
Oh another fun thing about Fista. It has a silly feature of using USB memory sticks as additional page swap, so soon enough we'll be back in 1988 with...

Dan,

Its indeed only supposed to be used by developers, but sooo many people downloaded it just because they were curious how it'll look like.
BTW, IE7 sucks
I would say im part of the curious crowd.

So far so good, not had a crash or blue screen as yet Not even hung once, so not to bad so far.

Games wise i dont know, haven'd had much time yet.

The thing is with anything (OS, DX, hardware drivers etc) you have to have the latest one to make something better, or somehting like that.

For example, their are many games out there today that say you NEED Windows XP. Games need the latest Direct X and graphic card drivers etc.

Note: I am in no way saying the latest is the best, just meerly stating what most companys and shit say.
As the current, legal Vista beta is free to download will it still work after Vista goes on sale?

stops working in nov 07 i think
Yeh, will have full content, genuine advantage etc untill November 07 which is when the full, proper Vista goes on sale. Then you would obviously buy it and install it over the beta.
