A kind of "free roam" mode
BlackSheep720
S2 licensed
South City has so many streets, but usually most are blocked off because they aren't part of the layout you're using at that moment. I think it would be cool to make all the streets available for use (couldn't have an official race this way, just a free roam [practice] mode); this would open up a fun aspect of the game and greatly improve the City Driving and other fun servers. What do you think?

I'm using an old Micrcosoft Sidewinder joystick, and I feel just fine. Not only are wheels expensive, but they take up space. A joystick is the right choice if you can't afford a wheel but don't want to use the mouse .

Actually I never realized. Go on and flame me though. Been playing about 2-3 months and have never blown a tire like that.
There are flat tires in LFS!

Did you know that under extreme tire wear, your tires can actually can actually go flat? It's pretty funny . (Picture attached)

EDIT - Duplicate post, please ignore if you want. Original post link in the reply below

Actor Eddie Griffin crashed a Ferrari Enzo while driving it at a charity event "Race for the Cure" on Monday, March 26th at the Irwindale Speedway. Guess hes a n00b!

Nice job on this. I know the reply's a little late though. Could use a bit of cleaning up perhaps .
Mouseover setup tips
BlackSheep720
S2 licensed
Here's an idea: If enabled, when you mouse-over a variable in the setup (take downforce, for instance), a small pop-up would come and tell you what adjusting that would do.

For instance, you mouse-over the wing angle bar, and the pop-up comes and tells you: "Wing angle adjusts how upright (or flat, for that matter) your wing is. A higher angle means less speed but more control, and a lower angle means higher speed but less control." Of course, my blurb may not be terribly well written, but you get the idea.

This would definitely be a great help to anybody wanting to make a great setup but not knowing what everything means.
Increased packet rate, or packet smoothing
BlackSheep720
S2 licensed
The current max packet rate (6x) is way to choppy to make a decent movie out of a .mpr file. Additionally, every time there's a packet update, the car moves choppily to its updated location. I think we should increase the max packet rate to somehting higher (10x perhaps?), although this would be tough on servers and player connections alike; OR (this is a better idea), create some kind of packet smoothing feature so that the car doesn't look all jerky because of the lowish packet rate. This would improve possibilities for movie making and would just make the game look better.

In summary, for those who don't want to read the whole thing - Make a higher packet rate (perhaps 10x), or create a packet smoothing feature.

Player unfairly banned? No chance to explain himself?
BlackSheep720

Player jetstream01 appears to have been banned for making an AutoX layout while he was a demo user. (Post can be found here: http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=21010) Is it possible that this user was actually using a 3rd party AutoX program such as LyTe and never actually hacked the game, or that he merely made the layout for other's enjoyment? While I'm not suggesting either scenario, I just think it's a little unfair that he was banned without even getting a chance to explain himself. Perhaps I'm wrong, in which case you may correct me. What's your take?

and mind me asking how this guy got a world record after bashing his car over the edge of the curb at the exit of the T1 chicane?

how do you get such a cinematic effect and such smoothness? My recordings look washed out and you can see the edges in the graphics.

Why do people try to get so involved with the demo? It's purpose is to let you try out the game. If you're enthused enough to start a "demo clan" and host a humongous 11 person race , you may as well purchase S2 cause you get way more cars and tracks, plus the ability to host a 23 player server (and did I mention fewer noobs?). If you're not, well then you wouldn't have posted this in the first place.
Globalization of F1 Racing

I'm doing a project on the globalization of F1 Racing (how it has spread throughout the world). Any tips that might help? It would be appreciated.

Idea: LFS Donations
BlackSheep720
S2 licensed
Would you be willing to pay a donation of 5-10 dollars (about 3-5 pounds), or a license surcharge of the same amount so that LFS could be developed faster, have better features, better physics, real tracks/cars, etc? I certainly would. What's your take on it?

League servers aside, the best servers are the 'Redline Racing' servers. RR uses the FOX and usually has 2-3 servers running on various tracks, making for great fun. STCC is also okay, but it's kinda boring since you have to drive crappy cars unless you have a silver license. Other than those servers, I just race in what's popular at that moment. The 'Caribbean Cruise' servers are also quite good fun if there aren't any good race servers going. Hope that helps.
Setup Field's setups
BlackSheep720

Just how good are the setups found on setup field? Are they perfect, or do they often require tweaking?

Also: Is it true that all the really good racers use almost the same setup? Thanks!

as a drifter, you don't really want to be fast. if ur fast, it means you have a weak angle, which just looks plain stupid. my suggestion: use a higher setup so that the car doesn't have too much downforce and can turn sharper.
Cool FOX Crash @ Blackwood

Commentary - Although this crash might look real, in that the driver genuinely lost control, I actually planned it out to look like that. Still, it shows just how realistic LFS's physics are. I think the game could benefit even further from parts of the car that could go flying off the car, such as wheels, wings, etc; I'll save that for an improvement section discussion, though. Please reply to comment on the vid! Thanks!

What do you mean it freezes? Do you mean the interface, the game, or your entire computer? If you get bad lag or the interface stops responding: Sometimes it seems that the server gets a bad case of the hiccups when a player is connecting, or if a player makes an inquiry. It should subside after 30 or so seconds, but if it doesn't, then you might have a more serious problem. Hope that helps.

Perhaps, although I've never tried it, it would be possible to unpack to another computer and then unlock it there? Just a notion.

I've found that the switch you're talking about (commonly used for engine power in flight simulators) cannot be programmed for anything in LFS, as the game doesn't recognize the axis that the switch uses. Hope that helps.
