Concerning the security in LFS...

I know people just don't want to hear about Phlos anymore, and I know he's not welcomed here for good reasons, however, from what I know (which is what he said himself), he didn't hack the forums for no reason, but to help point out that there are some holes somewhere. Well, since i'm pretty much clueless about all that, a few questions arise to me:

1. Was he talking about holes in this forum only or in LFS itself (in which we can suppose there are holes since he did crack it after all).
2. I know that this can seem pretty much stupid, but Phlos seems to know a bunch about computers, he did some stuff that most people are incapable of. Because of this, and because he claims that he wants to "help" the community and LFS, shouldn't we sometimes actually listen to him? As Vykos was saying to him in that chat he pasted on the other topic, Phlos must have found quite alot cracking and hacking it himself, so just fixing these holes (if they have not been fixed already) would be a good start (?).

Also (and I know there's a contradiction here), the hacking concept is somehow useful :/ It proves that there are holes in something, so isn't it better to work with people that can achieve it than ban them everywhere and not listen to them? And it's like that because hackers usually follow a pattern:

1. They will hack what is hard to hack (in a way that it's not called vadalism anymore)
2. They will hack what nobody has hacked before
3. They will hack what is said unhackable

Point one and two basically say that you're best to work with them and point three says that you should work with the best...

Anyway, i'm not totally sure I make sense... What you guys think? Imo, there's certainly something to learn or do here...

edit: oh and please don't turn this in a "he's stupid" post, it's more of a constructive threads about what should be done about hacking.

In my opinion, it's hard to define what would or would not make LFS old. I mean, we all agree that some of it's elements are a bit old (graphics, for example), but some elements are still the best there is.

For that reason, we just can't say that LFS is "old". It's not even finished. However, if some other guys decide to make something better and they put 50 person on it, LFS will probably get old quite quickly...

Here's the thing. I was on CLC server the other day, and at some point, I stopped on the side of the road. At this moment, some random guy comes on the side of my car and begins to poke it, then reverse about a meter, then poke my car again.

Anyway, I was on the handbrake because I didn't want to move, but I noticed that as he was poking my car, the tires were deforming side to side, which is normal, but it really seemed exagerated to me. I mean, if you take a car and poke it a bit with another car, the tires would not deform themselves so much, right?

I don't have a screenshot, but trust me, the tires were deforming alot as I was being poked by the other car, who was moving maybe 5 kph fast. I'd reckon it would be more the suspension's job to absorb that movement, not the tires themselves...?

And this applies to a bit anything in LFS, it's really great to see the tires deform, but sometimes it just seems a bit too much.

Indeed, you can pass them but the only reason it should happen is because they really crashed their cars. In a real race, it would mean that they gained a whole lap on you, therefore the only reason you can pass them is because they crash (or they just passed you and make a bad turn).

However, in LFS, there are some situations in which this might happen. If, for example, you come out of the pits in Blackwood and there's a car. Of course, you let him pass. Even if he's a lap or more ahead of you, you soon realise that he's really bad and you can pass him. Well, if he's that bad, just wait for him to crash :P If not, just try to pass clearly!

imo, it's two different things. You can't really say that the non-organic tomatoes are worse because they simply are better! They're redder and probably taste technically better. They're bigger, stay red longer and you can even wash dish with them.

The fuel is a different things. You can't really say that any is good because they kinda all do the same job. You can't say if ethanol is really better than normal fuel, they both make your car work the same, or in a very similar way.

The solution to that is to bring something that is both better for your car and the environement, which is probably electricity, and NOT ****in hybrid cars, what a waste these things. It's like saying: "uh, we're making the fuel stay with us longer". Is that any good? IMO, just use all of the fuel, than once there's none, the situation will not get worse, we'll all die but 2 people who will have to do the human race again.

How about when the qualification ends, no restarts allowed for the wr time of the track + an x number of seconds that would allow somebody to finish a respectable lap? For instance, let's say wr on a track is 1.50 with a certain car, you don't allow restarts at the end of qualifications for 2 minutes and 10 seconds. With 20 seconds over the wr, you can be sure that nobody will complain if they get cut in their lap.

We probably need better damage management if there's ever nascar anyway. The point of nascar races is that racers can try to take a turn 10 wide and crash the whole grid. I mean, we can't even get on fire at the moment... what's the point?

And if you want real nascars, there would be liscense problems, yes. If you want fakes, than it's crap anyway (see, I don't like nascars)

Is there any use to this? Yes, biofuel! Hurrah! We're not environmentalists in a game, get outside and do something instead. Just write 'BIOFUEL' on the side of your car. It would be completly pointless, even if you say a gti is running on biofuel, what's the difference? You feel better that you will not pollute lfs tracks?

If it's about advertising biofuels, it's not even a good idea. You don't advertise biofuels by using it to do a race, which on an environmental POV is an activity totally pointless and certainly bad for the earth. illepall

I'd rather have solar cars and a day/night cycle so we can do 24hours races were all the cars stop dead at night and move only when it's the day.

I don't think LFS will ever have NASCAR style vehicule. I mean... we all agree that what is in the game is there only because developpers mean it to be there, and I don't think Scawen wants LFS to get into nascar. After all, we're talking about a game where most of the cars are not real.

And anyway, there are tons of functions still to implent to make a respectable nascar race. Without rolling start, don't even think about it. Just stay with nascar games.

About the grass. It's true that it CAN be annoying, but I mean... there's a limit between "on track" and "off track" every track you race. There's no curbs at some points? Ya... so what? There are some areas of the track where it doesn't even matter if you hit the grass (like after the chicane, last turn coming on the straight, if you hit the grass, you lose almost no time and the dirt is gone before you get to the left turn.

Hi! I don't know if someone has the same problem or if it's my installation, but commands /track=as6 and /track=as7 don't seem to work in the menu.

I think i'll try the uf1 on the oval to see how much I can gain or lose on my current, 1 lapper time. It'll be great cause it'll give me and the people I will show my stats absolutly no idea of anything serious and/or true and/or accurate.

My expectations? I wish the tires won't blow up and if they do, I wish the rims are of good quality. I'd also L00000000000vvveee to see the tires of the uf1 at a 45 degrees angle on the oval curbs... what a feeling to drive on the sidewall of the tires... ah!

Would be nice with miliseconds and all that stuff so it feels faster and pisses everybody off

That's true. The fo8 would be completly dropped from the oval and the f1 would take all the place everywhere. I personally don't hate the idea of having an f1, as the difference from the fo8 and the f1 would be pretty big, but I don't know... I prefer racing touring cars in LFS.

I don't think you can actually copy an F1 and just rename it like this. Theses are full of copy right and it would be a specific model, the bmw f1 for example. I doubt that BMW would agree with the idea of let the devs copy their car like this without saying anything. Would be good advertising, but still...
