Quote from f1r3b4ll :x264 Installation Walkthrough

(The following workthrough assumes you have a basic knowledge of PC installation and configuration techniques, if in any doubt DO NOT continue, because neither myself or ANY of the OLFSL team are responsible for you not reading these instructions and then whining like little girls.)

Step 1.

Download the following file and install it.
http://mirror01.x264.nl/x264/f ... -gcc4.0.3-sse-x264.nl.exe

(x264 codec and FFDshow - required for the codec to run) - just follow the instructions and leave everything as it is for just now

Step 2.

Save this file and open it.
http://gbstv.info/dev/nsv_x264.zip

(You have to put the file "nsvdec_x264.dll" in your Winamp\plugins folder. - usually C:/program files/winamp/plugins)

Step 3.

Click Start->Program Files->FFDshow->VFW Configuration.

Then click the decoder tab and highlight x264 in the right-hand window - it will either say the codec is disabled or "libavcodec" - Make sure it is set to libavcodec.

You should now be ready to enjoy the brand new stream action.

Thanks for reminding me Mrs Fiendi - REMEMBER TO RESTART WINAMP!!!!

x264 allows much more accurate encoding meaning that you can decrease the streaming bitrate - our target bitrate is 200kbps, which is wildly variable in our current VP6 codec.

x264 is much more consistant and clearer in quality than vp6 at the same bitrate, remember as with all codecs, you can adjust the bitrate of that codec

*IMPORTANT* OLFSLtv Announcement

In our continuing strive to improve the quality of out OLFSLtv coverage, from this weekend we will be trialing a new codec for broadcasting on the stream.

The codec is called x264 and requires a little bit of manual work to get it setup correctly. After showing the improved stream to a number of people over the past few days, the reaction has been a very large thumbs up, it still might not be DVD quality but it is a significant improvement over our old streaming system.

I will be posting a how-to guide later this week describing how-to install the codec and configure the necessary tools. I had one drawn up but later encountered other problems due to a step i had taken in the guide.

The nature of codecs mean that I want to be VERY careful what I'm advising you to do, but as far as im aware the only problem you can get if you do a step wrong is your movies will not play. Again though this can be easily rectified.

More asap

Right sorry about that the explanation is as follows:

Last fortnight we streamed live coverage of the BMW F1 @ Aston. During the live stream a lot of complaints were made about the video stream breaking up and displaying artifacts... so as a precaution, i've reconfigured the layout of the components so that a fan is blowing directly onto the capture card.

As a result of this though. the components such as the capture card - reverted back to their old default drivers, meaning i was unable to change the capture cards settings - hence the blue screen, this was quickly rectified and I sincerely apologise for the delay and any action missed.

Many thanks - Dave

I think it's a bit extreme to blame the software when ( at least to me ) the software has a very simple hosting interface.

For those unfamiliar with hosting, the ingame server is an easy to use and simple start for getting a server running. While the dedicated server is your usually command-line afair...

Now blaming the program is a perfectly normal thing to do, if it is actually the program thats to blame... but considering there are hundreds of LFS servers running at any given moment, this wouldn't see, to be the case.

The reason why the software is "complicated" as you put it is simple. You are in control of how the server is setup, if you are one of those "I want things done in two clicks" gamers, then i seriously suggest a console might be a better option for gaming.
The majority of PC games take this approach to hosting games, because by nature (and in my opinion) PC servers allow you far greater control and say of the setup of the server than console servers that "just work".

There are many people on this forum who (myself included) would be happy to help you set up your own server, after all, there maybe quite a few american racers who would benefit if you started up a server.

Anyways if you need any more help with this - just post and we will help you through whatever bits you are stuck on :-)

Quote from Vagner :Hi Scawen,

1st. of all, nice job

In portuguese translations i have a problem. We speek "Dia Claro" ( Clear Day ), but, in translation say "Claro Dia". In other words, time of day and weather.
The same aplies in lenght of the track, ex "circuito 1.5 km" but is show 1.5 km circuit.

I think is complicated to resolve?

Sorry if I'm not clear enought.

I think if I'm right Vagner is trying to say the translation needs the word order changed round from "Claro Dia" to "Dia Claro" as well as the circuit.

Vagner, your english was pretty good - well done :-) if you want to post a list of what you have found in an order like:

Game Text Actual Text

Claro Dia Dia Claro

This might make things a little easier for you and wouldnt make you struggle with english :-) *edit - i put spacing in there, forgetting its a forum - DOH!*

When you say you can't host a game i presume you mean that no-one can join your game..

We need some more details about what your trying to do - in-game server - dedicated server ?

well anyways, it's running for now... I think legally we're talking along the same lines of casette recording...lol widespread but inferior quality and impossible to do anything about ...

If interest does pick up in this then I will see about moving the jukebox to another server and making enquiries about licensing :-)

Last time i checked on shoutcast.com - 9,644 visitors.

I think perhaps 4 have license's lol.

Afraid not t1ger, apparently internet streaming is one of those loopholes/grey areas that the BMI/RIAA have been trying to shut down, the only CERTAIN legality is that you own the mp3 your playing.
It's also very unlikely that anything would ever be said about a stream like this because of the radio quality stream, and the non-sharing of mp3's files.

Thanks for your concern though, nice to see people interested in the legal aspect of it all

cheers for the comments, this weekend was such a new thing for everyone involved.

Right the breaks, the reason they were so frequent this weekend was because the stream is still in its infancy, and with the lag problems of the previous server, i had to use my dads pc in the other room for MSN to check the status of it...

Also, quite a lot has changed... while im sitting at my pc now i can no longer alt tab out quickly to check the gridlist or qualifying times... this all has to be done on the other pc, but once we get into a proper routine, i'll have made a note of these things so i dont have to worry about it...

As for not know you guys too well... of course i don't, I've only been part of the OLFSL for less than 3 months so its going to take time to get to know 80+ drivers.

Driver interviews is another feature in the pipeline, but this all depends on the racers being present in a ventrilo or shoutcast server to have a private word with them. (again, bearing in mind i cant do it on this pc)

So once more thank you for all the comments - good and constructive :-) but please don't judge OLFSLtv on the past weekend... that was only a little taste
