I remember a similar thread about pitting from the line. I'd like to see a serverside option to disable shift-s and reset. Disabling it for a time period would also work.
EDIT: Quick fix, issue a 45 sec time penalty for shift-s/resetting.
In addition to custom banners how about having your pit crew waiting around your pitbox as you come in (F1 style). It'll be an easy way of identifying your box (unless 10 others are pitting with you, in which case you'll have to look at the banner) and would feel a little more immersive than having some floating text. Might be more hassle than it's worth though, what do you guys think?
The major problem I can think of is what to do when someone decides to run their pit crew over
I'd actually like to have a go on oval racing but not in the BF1, any car that can withstand a bit of bumping and rubbing will do. Needs to be a populated server as well. I'd like to see racing with 20 cars packed into 10 car lengths, that's the only thing that looks appealing to me when it comes to oval racing (I don't have a clue about NASCAR but 'Days of Thunder' looked fun ).
I'm openly stating that I've never read the rules on the redline server. But I'll have a go at guessing what they are,
1) If you're blueflagged get out of the way at the next safe opportunity
2) Maintain a reasonable degree of control over your vehicle and dont slam into other cars at turn 1.
3) Allow space to cars with significant overlap in corners
4) Don't weave about trying to block an overtaking car.
5) If you've spun out get off the track onto the grass(unless theres a stream of cars right behind you, in that case stay put)
6) When rejoining after a crash or from the pits dont just jump out blindly. Make sure there is a suitable gap for you to merge in to.
7) Don't crash into anyone intentionally at any time.
8) Don't use abusive language.
Have I missed anything? All common sense really, you shouldn't have to be told to race like this. If you do break any of these rules and cause an accident I'm sure an apology would fix it.
This is getting unbelievably out of hand. It seems there's a trend where slagging off Redline is 'cool' or something.
The Redline guys don't have to justify anything. You guys are wasting your breath trying to do so. I've raced on the server many times before all this fuss kicked up and still do. To be honest I've never read the rules, I just race and act sensibly and seems to have served me well. I've never had any problems. I will continue racing there until I am unjustly banned/kicked as I inevitably will be according to many people in this thread. After which I will move to another server and continue racing there without making another useless whining thread like this.
I think it's perfectly fine to ban/kick someone for having an attitude problem. It doesn't cost you anything to be civil.
As for thinking your server will get a bad name, the ones that whine about being banned are noobs (not the stupidly fast LFS team the other one) that don't belong there. Anyone that listens to them and believes blindly without verifying for themselves is also a noob that doesn't belong there. So you're not losing out.
I say just don't respond to threads like these and the whiners will just wear themselves out.
Slightly off topic, can anyone explain how yellow flags work? I mean how does the system recognize a yellow flag and the driver that has lost control and caused it (I've seen some servers giving messages like 'RacerX has lost control' etc).
I have an idea about black flagging, but it depends on how yellow flags work.
My idea is,
If you're not causing a yellow flag
and you hit a guy who's not causing a yellow flag (infront of you)
which results in him causing a yellow flag
you get a black flag
I've raced with you several times on that server, you seem a decent enough racer. But being perfectly honest I hate people crashing into me after the race, mainly because my wheel goes nuts. So I'd support the admin's decision. I could always shift-s, or drive round the back of the pits, but why should I have to?
If someone expects you to pull over and let them pass because they're faster, they obviously have no idea about the concept of racing. The most fun part is overtaking. If they can't overtake, maybe racing isn't for them .
As dumpy said, faster doesn't mean better. I'd rather be slower and in control than faster and in the wall.
'Days of Thunder' is the closest I've been to NASCAR
It looked like great fun, I'd love to give it a try in LFS. I had a go on NASCAR 2003, but I've been playing LFS so much I don't feel comfortable in other racers.
I cant remember ever using reset. Normally I just shift-s. It's annoying enough seeing a car just dissapear in front of you but a hell lot more annoying seeing one materialize.
I don't see the usefulness of reset considering we have shift-s. I'm all for disabling resetting altogether. If you've screwed up, go back to the pits.
All valid points there tweaker, but I don't understand why you're so strongly against it? It was merely a suggestion. A few others on this thread agree with me so it's not totally absurd.
I wasn't suggesting something that would take months of work to implement. A simple toggle would take what? all of 5 lines of code probably. And it's not of the utmost importance, just a suggestion that you can feel free to ignore.
People prefer to display their racename, I prefer to see their username, it's all about preference isn't it?
a)Yellow
b)Yellow if his lap count is the same, Red if his lap count is higher.
c)As above.
d)Red.
e)Yellow.
f)Yellow if his lap count is the same, Orange if his lap count is lower.
g)As above.
h)Orange.
A little confused about % lap ahead/behind. So my colouring may be off.
I was suggesting colouring the dots based on the lap count of the driver. If I'm on lap 5, everyone else on lap 5 will be yellow, regardless of whether they're ahead of or behind me. Everyone on lap 6 or higher is red. Everyone on lap 4 or lower is orange.
The only problem I can see is people's colour changing from yellow to red as they cross the line and then back to yellow as you cross the line (because of the lap difference). Same goes for people behind you, yellow to orange as you cross the line and back to yellow as they cross the line. So maybe a delay after crossing the line before the colours change will help, or maybe it'll look ok as it is. Only one way to find out.
Harder than if you just read his username above his car . Then, even if he disconnects, you still have his username.
But that's not why I suggested it. Say I want to contact a racer after a race, but I only have his racename, it is quite difficult to work out who he is. You're not always thinking 'oh, I better ctrl-shift to find out who he really is'. This option would just make finding people and identifying people easier.
As said in a post above, I could program the profiler and tape a button down, so why not just have an option.
Annoying as hell waiting around after a race trying to get everyone to shift-r at the same time. Although I'd be content with my shift-r vote not expiring.
As for sleepers, I say leave them. As some posts say, it could happen IRL. Another 'Oh shit!' moment to deal with.
How about a clientside option to toggle the name displayed above cars (and the user list) between the race name and the username of the drivers? I know you can open up the userlist, hold ctrl-shift and see the usernames, but would this be a bad idea?
That's exactly what I was thinking. I thought my description was clear enough , guess not.
The only real difference between the current system and this is you can tell if someone ahead is a lap (or more) ahead so you won't do anything silly.
The other difference would be a car wouldn't change from yellow to orange once you overtake it, so if you see a yellow car closing on you you know you're fighting to retain position. If it's red, let it through. In the rare case that it's orange just be a bit careful, either pick up the pace or let them through and avoid a crash.
That's what I was joking about. The saving is somewhat insignificant as I pointed out, it's just human nature to not pay for stuff until you absolutely have to :P . As tristan said, paying in advance is just showing that extra bit of support for the devs.
@greboth: I'll be using inflation beating savings (the ones Alan Sugar keeps going on about )
One thing I would really like is an option to shift the map to the right underneath lap, position, etc. Doesn't even have to rotate. The map is covered by chat far too often and at crucial times like when exiting pits. I don't want to have to disable chat.
As for colours theres only three significant classes of racers on the track.
If a racer is,
same lap, yellow
lap(s) behind, orange
lap(s) ahead, red
