One thing I would really like is an option to shift the map to the right underneath lap, position, etc. Doesn't even have to rotate. The map is covered by chat far too often and at crucial times like when exiting pits. I don't want to have to disable chat.
As for colours theres only three significant classes of racers on the track.
If a racer is,
same lap, yellow
lap(s) behind, orange
lap(s) ahead, red
Being particularly awkward , £12 is worth more now than it will be in 2-3 years time (inflation and such). So I'm going to invest it now and make 4.2% over 3 years and then buy S3. So I'll have a S3 license and an extra £1.50, let the good times roll!
IE might have it now, I don't know. Used both opera and firefox, stuck with firefox as I'd spent so much time getting it just the way I want it. I'm sure I could do the same with opera.
Why not just disqualify anyone that shift-s's? So they can shift-s whenever they like but never be able to win a race. Seems fair to me seeing as shift-s is a convenience feature of lfs. If you've messed up somehow and need to shift-s, in real life you'd be out of the race.
I've got my DFP set to 900 degrees and wheel compensation set to 1 so my DFP turns as much as the wheel ingame regardless of vehicle. It might be easier using a smaller lock but I wanted as much realism as possible. It's all about the experience for me (can't wait for the G25 ), not how competitive I am . I started racing this way from the outset so I wouldn't have to change later.
It really feels like a huge achievement when you catch a slide in a car with 720 lock :P.
n3o claims he was making an app for a friend and he's not part of the lfs community. As he said, what does he care about lfs? To him lfs is just some silly game. If he was an active racer and part of this community and did what he did, then you could hang him from the nearest lampost.
He made this app and found out the trouble it has caused and is making an effort to help repair the damage he unintentionally caused. He could just sit back and think 'screw it, let them sort it out'. So put some thought into the situation before you decide to lynch him.
As he so rightly said, what assurance do we have that this isn't a new cheat and it has been found earlier and used more discreetly?
I agree the learning curve would be much steeper but I was merely saying that lack of sound shouldn't limit your potential.
As for a solution, how about a screech-o-meter of sorts. Basically a visually representation of the sound we hear. We hear the sound and realise things are about to go pearshaped, deaf gamers can look at this meter/bar and realise the same. The bass shakers and kev's idea sound pretty good too.
On a different note; vrooom, how do you feel racing in packs? I don't think I'd be able to without sound.
I was really intrigued by this thread so I had a go. I tested FOX on BLGP. MY PB is 1.09.86 although I lap consistently in the 1.10s(3 seconds off WR pace). I did 15 laps without sound and managed a 1.10.22 and most clean laps were 1.10s. I'm sure with a bit more practice I could do better.
I only had a few late shifts as I do use the little red indicator. I was in the wrong gear a couple of times, found i wasn't getting enough power, looked at the dash and realized. But I also found I was hitting corners more aggressively, I think the screeching unnerves me. I only spun out twice from getting on the gas too early, but I don't think having sound helps much there (just gives auditory feedback confirming you're screwed).
I believe you can be pretty competitive without sound. I'm managing 3s off WR pace with 15 minutes of practice. Although I don't know how I'd fare being stuck in the middle of a pack with no sound (I use cockpit view). I rely on sound there to let me know if cars are nearby. I'd assume at WR level sound is pretty important. Maybe some WR holders will have a go .
It'd be good if some type of aid can be developed for deaf gamers. I'm sure if some idea's were thrown up the dev's would be happy to implement it.
That just says to me you're a better driver (more aware and quicker thinking) than the guy behind. He should've slowed down and drove around him as well. Having said that, it's ridiculous sitting on the track lap after lap. My aversion to shift-s-ing is only right after an incident. Once everyone has gone by, either get back into the race or shift-s.
Maybe we should have Hazard Perception Tests in LFS . If I'm following two cars fighting for position I always have in the back of my head 'one of them is bound to cock it up'. I'm rarely in an accident that I didn't see coming (unless of course I'm hit from behind or swerved into).
As for the early braking and lift off scenarios, I say it's your responsibility to not hit stuff in front of you. There's nothing the guy in front can do to avoid you hitting him, and saying he should keep the gas on or not brake isn't a valid arguement. Perhaps he's lifting off to maintain control of the car, so you're giving him the option of 'lose control and spin out' or 'maintain control and get hit by me (and then lose control)'
I get caught off guard by early brakers and such aswell, but the result is usually just a small tap(brake hard and come to a standstill if I have to) followed by a 'sorry' from me.
I'd rather racers didn't shift-s after crashing. I don't unless the server insists. I love the challenge of trying to avoid stuff on the road (probably too much need for speed :P). I'm not a very fast racer but I really enjoy these split second reaction tests.
But I agree with the first post, if you've crashed and your stranded in the middle of the road(with racers right behind you) just stay there, the other drivers will figure out the best path around you.
A split is an intermediate measuring point of a lap time. In other words a track maybe divided(split?) into two or three sectors/splits, and you measure your time for each split and the aggregate is your lap time.
So now I know I'm locking brakes at some point and flatspotting the tyre. I figured out where I'm doing this, now I gotta figure out how to stop it. Is having a few contact points in the red bad or is it inevitable?
I'm having problems while braking for the sharp left at the end (you can hear the funny ABS like sound). Any pointers on what to do? I've been fiddling with the settings, but no luck so far
One other thing I'm confused about. When racing the tyre display sort of jumps about in the red/yellow, but when I come to a stand still (in a matter of seconds) the temperature is green. Does this fluctuation while rolling mean anything or is it just a glitch in the readout?
As for braking, funnily the set does brake in a straight line it doesn't pull out. One other thing I forgot to mention is I use right-hand drive.
I'll try the toe-in suggestion. I was just going by some of the stuff in Bob's guide, maybe I misunderstood something (so much information!).
I've yet to work on the gear ratio, I'll start that after I get the suspension sorted. Finding a balance between acceleration, top speed and handling is alot harder than it seems .
This isn't anything major, but when I double click a SPR/MPR LFS loads up but all I get is a black screen for about 20 seconds and then everything starts loading up normally.
If I press esc at anytime during the black screen, everything starts loading right away. I'm running U14.
I'm fairly happy with the set as it is, I can manage 59.xx. I'm ok on the first split, I can run 17.xx, it's the last two turns I'm struggling to take with any decent speed. If I don't ease off the car spins, still trying to figure out how to remedy that.
Also the dipping left turn after T1, I've seen people just floor it through there. But when I try the car spins out. I'm assuming that's a suspension problem, but not sure precisely what.
I'm a total beginner when it comes to setups, but i've been having a go trying to make my own. Bob's Setup Guide helped quite a bit but some of it just went over my head.
The main problem I have is due to the track (SO Sprint 1) having more left turns than right I find my leftside tyres remain cold while my rightside are at optimum temperature. I tried to remedy this by lowering tyre pressure on the leftside and putting heavy camber. Now the tyres heat up at the same rate but I'm assuming this is a bad way to go about things.
Suspension settings are just guesswork for me. The set I've attached is pretty drivable for me.
I was wondering if some of the setup guru's here can have a look and give me a few pointers.
I'm relatively new on the LFS scene, but was looking to get into some organised racing. I'm not a really fast driver, so are there any guidelines on what pace you're looking for?
With a month between races getting up to speed on a combo shouldn't be too much of a struggle :P
When racing I refer to the minimap quite alot, only alot of the time its covered by chat and connect/disconnect message. I know I can block chat with - but that doesn't do anything about the connect/disconnect etc messages.
Is there any way to move the minimap to the right hand side, so i can still have chat and all that on but the map will never be covered?
My very first post here (although i browse regularly ), kinda ironic it being giving advice .
Electrik Kar I'm not a very fast driver myself but I can see you let the car slide alot and aren't using the whole width of the road.
I've attached an SPR of me racing using your car (driving on the left feels kinda weird to me) and managed a few 1.36's, although I am using a wheel. But hopefully you'll get a rough idea and it'll help you shave a second or two off.
I'm personally stuck on cracking into 1.34's, so guys expect one of my replays up soon
