OWRL MRT Cup brings joy after Christmas
Krutch
S2 licensed

While many may be in the mood for Christmas, we are looking forward to when that is over, as that means we get to compete in the MRT Cup. This OWRL tradition starts right after Christmas and takes us into the new year. We found three open layouts that look exciting to race on. The season starts at Aston Cup, a combination from Club and Cadet, then moves to Fern Bay Cup which gives the Club layout a bit extra lenght and variety. The winner of the cup will be decided at the infield of Kyoto, as Kyoto North is our first 2012 event.

The OWRL started in 2004 as a MRT only league. Since S2 it has expanded to use all formula cars available in LFS, but the end of year competition remains reserved for the MRT5. The last edition of the MRT Cup was won by Xcite C. Winkler.

To signup, simply go to the upcoming events on the top hand right and register for the events you participate in. Make sure you set a time on our training server before signup deadline (3 hours before the race).

P. Hopkins crowned OWRL F1 2011 champion

P. Hopkins, [SR] Team B earn OWRL F1 championship at Kyoto

Pete Hopkins is crowned champion of the OWRL F1 Series 2011. In the final round of the season the Brit never was far off the lead and sealed it by finishing on the podium. Different strategies and a lot of on track action made for a tense race. With one of his rivals, Adam Wisniewski, leading the race most of the time, Hopkins could not relax until he finally crossed the line in second place, winning the championship by 8 points.

(click for full size)

The race had a tremendous amount of lead changes. Whilst some of the 11 changes may have been due to different strategies, still on track plenty of overtaking was to be seen. Wisniewski just kept the lead starting from pole with Hopkins and Dave Southword following him. Southword was the fastest of the three and got the lead on lap 9 until the was the first to pit. The same routine happened at the second round of pitstops with the difference that Hopkins was mixing it up with Wisniewski as well, before they settled with the Polish driver ahead in second. As for the first position, Southword was leading the race up to two laps to go. His strategic decision not to change tyres made for very difficult final laps as the rubber cooled down. Not without putting up a fight he couldn't prevent Wisniewski grom regaining the lead to finish first. Southword would drop to third after one of his tyres finally gave way, but still finished on the podium.

And with two drivers on the podium, [SR] Team B comfortably took the team championship over Playerzone Italia. A highly competitive season of OWRL F1 comes to a close and the season has been won by the consistent speed that Pete Hopkins showed. To both Pete and the Sonicrealms team, congratulations on an outstanding performance!

Four way championship fight as Wisniewski takes Aston

Adam Wisniewski has won his third race in a row at Aston National reversed despite qualifying on fourth. Polesitter Dave Southword, who had a remarkable pole lap on R3 tyres, dominated early on in the race. Just after his pitstop his race came to an abrupt end. Going into the first chicane for the first time at full speed on cold tyres, he got just a little too wide sending him into a spin ultimately ending in the wall after another car was unable to avoid him. Wisniewski had already used the first ten laps to get to second place and was handed the lead. He never looked back. The spdo driver finished ahead of Stuart Newnham who recovered from a bad start to equal his second starting position at the finish.

The championship battle closed up during the race. At one point, it was looking like Pete Hopkins could grab the title at this round driving around in fourth position. But all his rivals found the way to the podium during the race while he lost a position to finish fifth. Especially Naselli's drive was an excellent performance. After being involved in incident at the start, the Italian did not lose his nerve and trusted his long fuel strategy to gain positions. This worked perfectly for the Playerzone driver, bringing him third position at the finish. Pete Hopkins is still leading the driver standings and will win the title if he finished on the podium. If he doesn't, Naselli, Wisniewski and Newnham all will do everything they can to take the lead away at the final round of the season.

The team championship also will be decided at Kyoto GP Long, but with Playerzone 32,5 points shy from [SR] Team B, the team would need its best performance of the season whilst the Sonicrealms drivers can only score minor points. In any case, it looks like a tense battle between four drivers and two teams making the OWRL F1 championship a lot more exciting than its real world counterpart!

S2 Season 19: the FOX and the V8

The Open Wheel Racing League gets a brand new S2 Season underway on 17 September and this time, the season consists of 6 action packed events using two popular formula cars in Live For Speed. The first three races drivers can get up to speed in the Formula XR. In the second part the high power, no traction control Formula V8 will make the next challenge.

For both parts of the season a seperate driver championship will be held. The overall title goes to the driver who is best in both parts - but includes a worst race dropped rule so drivers who miss an event are not directly out of the race. Also back is the team championship over the full six events.

Race weekends
All races are on saturday evenings in a bi-weekly schedule. The events start with a 15 minute qualifying session at 20:00 CEST. For the FOX races, the event continues with a sprint and main race, with the starting grid of the main race being the result of the sprint race with the top 8 reversed. The FO8 events have only one race, but longer and with a mandatory pitstop.

As for the tracks, the season starts at the classic Blackwood GP and contains two open layouts in the middle of the season, before finishing at the golden combination of the Formula V8 and Fern Bay Gold.

The calendar:
(# date: track (car)
R1 17-09: Blackwood GP (FOX)
R2 01-10: South City Town (FOX)
R3 15-10: Aston Central (AS11, FOX)
R4 29-10: Kyoto Grand Touring (KY32, FO8)
R5 12-11: Aston Grand Prix (FO8)
R6 26-11: Fern Bay Gold (FO8)

FBM Trophy to bring open layouts in OWRL
Krutch
S2 licensed

Before summer started the devs gave us a new patch including the option to use open layouts. And in this summer we are going to race on some of the finest new tracks this update has to offer! The 2011 FBM Trophy starts this sunday and promises close racing on configs that were not used before in the OWRL.

Just like in the two previous editions the FBM Trophy will have three races per event. A qualifying race to determine starting positions, a sprint race for 50% of the points and a main race, also for half the points, with a top 8 starting grid reversed. Races will be held on sunday evenings with the qualifying race starting at 20:00 CEST.

First up will be Aston Chicane Route, a track that combines the tight nature of the Cadet track with some of the flat out racing on Historic rev. The second race is on a track that has long been without pit lane, making it useless for much of league racing, but that has been fixed with South City Sprint Full 1. Another unique feature of that layout is that the starting grid is outside the normal lap. Finally the season ends on Fern Bay Silver, a track that suits the Formula BMW very well and it will allow for an exciting finish to the Trophy.

Participation is open for everyone with the only requirement that you signup for the events at owrl.de and set an online time on our training server before signup deadline. During the event multiple servers will be used if more than 24 drivers sign up.

Times set on the training server will be tracked and decide the server you drive on and the grid for the qualification race.

Calendar (click for track map):

R2 21 Aug - South City Sprint 1 Full
R3 04 Sep - Fern Bay Silver

You may be thinking that the OWRL admins are all taking a summer break, and we hope you think that is well deserved, but that's not entirely true.

Behind the scenes we are already preparing for the FBM Trophy. Not all details have been ironed out, except for the car of course. We also have settled on the date that the season will start: Sunday 7 August.

We are looking at the options for using the open configurations added in the latest patch. One of those, A12 - Aston Chicane Route, has already been installed on our OWRL F1 Train server. Go give it a try and let us know which tracks you say we should race.

The full announcement for this season and exact rules will follow at the end of July.

One week left to sign up for the OWRL F1 2011 season

So far we’ve received eigth applications for the upcoming season. Nine if you count an incomplete one that will materialize shortly. If you are a team of at least two drivers who are searching for a well-organized BF1 league then this is your chance to take part. Just send a mail to [email protected] containing your team name and lfsworld names of the drivers until 15 May. Races are on Sunday evenings and 305km long with a two-part qualifying. More information about the OWRL F1 and the upcoming season can be found on the OWRL F1 info page.

It's important to note that drivers without a team can form one just for this season; you do not have to be in a LFS team to create an OWRL F1 team. Some are already using the chatbox or forum to find possible teammates.

The drivers of teams that have signed so far have been added to the tracker. It's not complete yet as a driver needs to be registered on www.owrl.de before he can be added, so register if you want to compare your times with your fellow competitors.

OWRL F1 2011: Sunday is the new race day

It's time to put the best drivers and teams in the fastest car in LFS once again! OWRL’s BF1 league will start in a months time on Sunday 22 May. Race days have been moved to Sunday for OWRL F1 2011 by request of last years drivers. The calendar is made up out of eight races each over 305 KM, visiting each location at least once.

In OWRL F1, teams of two drivers compete all season long for the driver and team championships. Just like the real deal, qualifying is run in multiple phases with parc ferme conditions for the top 10 qualifying, points are awarded up to P10 and race strategy is vital with multiple pit stops per race, even though in Live For Speed the tires last a little longer than this years Pirellis. The season runs from May until October and has a summer break in July/August.

Applications

Teams consisting of at least two drivers can apply via mail to -email- with the exact team name and LFS world names of the drivers that will take part. Applications are open until Sunday 15 May 23:00 UTC. Teams can change drivers between each race, but for one team only two drivers can race per event. Teamless and interested drivers can form temporary teams for OWRL F1 or start as a guest driver for an invited team that cannot start with two drivers. The invited teams will be announced shortly after the sign-up deadline.

OWRL kicks back into action with S2 Season 18

The Open Wheel Racing League announces its next S2 Season starting this month. S2 Season 18 will bring you the best open wheel racing in Live For Speed using a variety of formula cars. Once more, all drivers take part in the same competition to fight for the championship in one of LFS longest standing leagues. This season will see drivers deal with the Formula XR for the first two races, then get ready for close action in the Formula BMW in the middle section and jumping in the Formula V8 to decide the championship.

All events will be run using the sprint and main race combination, where the top 8 finishers from the sprint race are reversed for the main race. Once more not only a driver championship will be battled out, also teams will fight for the honor of being the best in the first 2011 edition of OWRL's S2 Season series.

Calendar
(# date: track (car) - # laps sprint / main)
R1 26-02: Kyoto National (FOX) - 8 / 27
R2 12-03: Aston Historic rev (FOX) - 6 / 21
R3 26-03: South City Long (FBM) - 9 / 28
R4 09-04: Fern Bay Gold rev (FBM) - 11 / 34
R5 23-04: Blackwood GP (FO8) - 11 / 35
R6 07-05: Kyoto GP Long (layout) (FO8) - 7 / 28

The 'Boothy Chicane' to be used at round 6. Click for full size

For all events, a 15 minute qualifying session decides the start order for the sprint race. The top 8 finishers will be reversed for the main race starting grid, encouraging even more close racing. We will use as many servers as needed for all interested drivers. Servers are limited to 28 drivers per server.

Points
For the sprint race 33,33% of the points will be awarded. For the main this is 66,67% for a total of 100%.

In a season the worst result is dropped. The points are compared on a event basis (sprint/main race combined for phase 1 & 2). This means, if a driver completes and scores points at all six events, the event he scored the least points in is discarded. If a driver misses an event, that automatically will become his worst result. The two drivers scoring the most points for each team will count toward the team championship.

To join, simply register on www.owrl.de and sign up for each event you plan to take part in. For further details on the competition, see the S2 Season info page.

New admin as OWRL's 2011 plans are announced

The Open Wheel Racing League welcomes Y. Laprevotte to the rank of OWRL admin. Yann is no stranger to anyone who competed in OWRL events recently, as he already has been server admin, marshal and reporter in our efforts to bring the best open wheel racing in Live For Speed. With him added the plans for the 2011 season have been finalized. We will continue to put drivers to the test in a combination of cars in multiple S2 seasons and use the F1 car in LFS in OWRL F1 2011. Added to that is our annual summer cup, the FBM Trophy. The following seasons will be run:
  • S2 Season 18: 26 Feb - 7 May (6 races)
  • OWRL F1 2011: 21 May - 8 Okt (8 races with a summer break)
  • FBM Trophy 11: August - Early September (3 races)
  • S2 Season 19: 17 Sep - 29 Nov (6 races)
Each season will run in a bi-weekly schedule. Details for each season will follow on a per season basis. S2 Seasons and OWRL F1 events will be held on saturday evenings.

Y. Laprevotte joins Feuerdrache, K. Egloff (server) and Krutch (head admin) as admin. He was asked why he made this step:
Quote :"The OWRL is one of the most ancient leagues on LFS, with a lot of history. After driving in it for more than 2 years, I am very glad to extend my involvement. I will do my best with my fellow admins to keep the league to its great standards and its strong place in the LFS community, for a long, long time."

Stay tuned for the full announcement of S2 Season 18 next week.
C. Winkler and Xcite grab MRT Cup victory

The last round of the season was held on the classic Blackwood GP configuration, with the tight backstraight chicane back to service after being introduced in the 2009-2010 Cup. With Xcite C.Winkler having almost secured the title at round 2, only the final podium positions were at stake.

v\J.Peace proved to be the fastest man of the season - by far - after snatching his 3rd pole out of 3 events. The whole first row was the same as round 2, as CoRe Feuerdrache once again claimed 2nd, but this time, the German was much closer to his British rival: only 3 hundredths separated the two youngsters.

v\J.Peace also proved once again to be the kind of driver endlessly followed by controversy. The 16 years old had a good start, however, a mistake at the exit of turn 2 put his lead in a possible threat. Peace then weaved in Feuerdrache's direction, and sent the latter into grass. This allowed 5th and 3rd place starters Xcite C.Winkler and Xcite K.Egloff to take the lead. Only a lap later, Peace attempted to pass Egloff, but the two cars contacted, sending Egloff into a spin. Peace then passed Winkler at lap 6 - cleanly, this time - and flied to his 3rd sprint race victory in a row, however, it looks rather likely that he will be penalised for his actions. Winkler would finish in 2nd while championship runner-up just.papax would inherit 3rd place, after both Xcite Chris and Goc/J.Koskinen held it at some point, but went off.

CoRe Feuerdrache climbed to 6th after his incident with Peace, but the German dropped to 8th on purpose in the last lap. The German had a good reason for it: this move would give him pole for main race. The gamble paid off: Feuerdrache would never be worried, and would take the victory after holding the lead from light to flag. The main excitement was the superb scrap for second between Xcite C.Winkler and v\J.Peace. After being nose to gearbox or wheel to wheel for a few laps, it looked like Peace had a definitive advantage at lap 16. However, the British would go off a few laps later, allowing Winkler and team-mate Egloff to go alongside him in the pitstraight. None would yield, and Peace would send Egloff into another spin, while Winkler would spin on his own a few hundred meters later... This meant that Peace would keep his 2nd place, in front of Egloff and Winkler.

In pool B, recently formed Team 6th Gear Racing dominated, taking both sprint(6th|Chrono) and main race(6th|Sonsaku).

Unsurprisingly, XCite C.Winkler took a well deserved drivers title. With 280 points composed of 2 wins, 3 second places and a 4th place, he led the championship from round 1 to 3, and never seemed to be in danger. The chasing group comes 55 points behind, with 5 drivers grouped in 24 points. A very consistent just.papax takes 2nd place, in front of v\J.Peace. B^mx devis takes 4th, in front of 2009/2010 MRT Cup champion Xcite K.Egloff, who had a bitterly disappointing campaign. TEM/L.Chebbi is last of this group, in 6th place.

This edition of the MRT Cup also saw the introduction of a brand new team championship. The title was taken hands down by Xcite Racing, with a 136 points lead over their closest rivals. 2nd and 3rd places are taken by eXtrem Racing and Tiger Express Motorsports, grouped by only 10 points.
