Div A spots to be won by hotlap competition

Do you want to drive in Div A, but haven't been able to crack through the ranks just yet? This might be your get-in-Div-A card! As the new season approaches, some places on the 24-driver grid are still free. And we are going to fill them by giving the spots to the drivers who can post the fastest hotlap at Aston North. This track features the second race of our upcoming season and a driver has to be able to find the balance of his Formula V8 in the slow and fast corners to get to a quick time.

So if you want to drive in the OWRL Div A, what do you need to do?
- Register an account at www.owrl.de
- Drive a hotlap and upload it to LFS World before the end of Friday 6 February, 24:00 CET.
- Drop us a line at [email protected] or send a private message to Krutch.

We will announce the winning drivers on saturday morning, the day our new Div A/B season kicks off at Blackwood GP! Once the first participants are in we will open a tracker for this hotlap competition.

Pre-qualified Div A Drivers

The OWRL admins may deny a top six qualifier entry to Div A if he does not have any relevant league experience.

Open Wheel Racing League reveals plans for 2009
Krutch
S2 licensed

The OWRL, the league dedicated to bring the best open wheel racing in LFS, continues to evolve its schedule as we now prepare for this year's seasons. First to start is our 14th season using our famed division system, in which Div A will race Formula V8 and Div B will alternate between the Formula XR and the Formula BMW. It will start in February. Next up is the 2009 running of our OWRL F1 Series. The season will start in April, but the first of the test events already have been held. Later this year the community can expect a Formula BMW trophy and a second Div A/B season before we finish the year with our traditional MRT Cup. Are you in?

Division A/B

Div A/B competitions consist of 6 events, in which pre-qualified drivers get to race in Division A using the FO8. How to qualify for Div A? Through Division B of course! Drivers can expect close battles in the two smaller formula cars, leading to a championship that almost always is decided at the last event of the season. The top 7 of each season will get the status of Division A driver for next season. Qualification is also possible through pre-qualification races, and sometimes by hotlap competition. In 2009 two Div A/B seasons will be held.

2009 Seasons:
  • S2 Season 14 - 7 February -> 18 April (More details here)
  • Pre-season S2 season 15 - August
  • S2 Season 15 - 19 September -> 28 November
Signup: On a per-race basis. Once a season is fully planned, the races can be found under 'Upcoming events' at our site. Register there. It is required that you post an online pb and/or submit a hotlap before the signup deadline.

OWRL F1

The OWRL F1 Series started in 2007 to make optimal use of the BMW Sauber F1.06 that was added to LFS. Entries are made by (at least) two drivers, qualifying uses a top 10 qualifying system in which drivers have to use race fuel and setup and the races are run over the full length. Right now we are discussing whether to add a ban on traction control. A first test race has been run which turned out to be a good event, but no final decision has been made. We like to hear your opinion on this matter, so let us know what you prefer!

2009 season:
  • OWRL F1 2009 - April -> October/November
Signup: Before the season teams can send in their application. It has to consist of two drivers and if possible some backup drivers. It may, but does not have to be, a LFS team. Two drivers without a team may also join forces and create a team for OWRL F1 2009 only. More details on the season and the exact application procedure will follow.

Other competitions

In 2009, two seasons will be run outside the Div A/B and OWRL F1 formats. As you can expect from us, we will end the year with the MRT Cup. This short cup starts right after christmas and bridges into the new year. As we have our tradition at the end of the year, we decided to add a new competition that runs about half-way through 2009, the Formula BMW Trophy. This FBM Trophy consists of four races and is open to everyone. We are hoping this will be just as much fun as the MRT Cup!

2009 Seasons:
  • FBM Trophy - 30 May -> 11 July
  • MRT Cup - 27/28 December -> 2 January 2010
Signup: On a per-race basis. Once a season is fully planned, the races can be found under 'Upcoming events' at our site. Register there. It is required that you post an online pb and/or submit a hotlap before the signup deadline.

Hi Gonchi,

For the Div B races, you can sign up for any of the races as soon as they are in our agenda. Unlike F1, you do not need to signup for the season. But of course if you take part in any of the races, it also counts towards the season!

At the moment no Div B race is planned, but if you go to www.owrl.de you can see the upcoming events on the right hand side. Later this month we will add the races for the next season, which will probably start in February.

Hope this helps

Paddi brings home OWRL's MRT Cup 2008/09

spdoPaddi has won the MRT Cup. In the final round at Fern Bay Gold Paddi dominated the event by winning the first race, then scoring another podium finish despite starting 8th with the reversed grid. Even by winning the second race, SpeedCore.GTR_PT trails Paddi in the standings by 49 points, almost a race win. Speedcore's young talent gapped Xcite | Fireball in the standings with his victory.

Paddi laid the basis of his first MRT Cup win by dominating qualifying and Race 1 at all three events. In race 2 he stayed out of trouble where possible, gaining enough ground to still finish on the podium in two of those races. Paddi continues to demonstrate the strength of the spdo team by becoming the third different spdo-driver to win an OWRL championship. Congratulations!

FPR | Matze wins the OWRL F1 Championship with a win at Kyoto

Everyone was looking for a close fight between the two championship contenders and the qualifying showed that everyone was right. Only three hundredths of a second. But there was still a driver who was faster. Newcomer Milos, driving for DoKu Racing took the pole-position with a one second gap and had the best position for the upcoming 42 laps of the final race.

(click for full size)

Milos was able to keep the lead on front of ^P^Storm, who overtook FPR|Matze at the beginning of this race. Both were followed by spdo FiredUp. The race was five laps old, when DoKu.Milos spun at Turn 1After a very long recovery he had to give up. Storm took over at the front, followed by Matze and FiredUp. But Matze led the race a few laps later when Storm made a mistake. OMC Jet could keep up with a little distance, the rest of the field was dropping back.

It was all about the pit stops. FiredUp was the first to pit, which left the two championship contenders alone at the front. Storm did a mistake right before his pit stop that took him every chance to get in front of Matze. Both are driving consistent lap times, behind them was FiredUp who has to give up once again. 1stBFA|haelje reaches the third place way behind Matze and Storm. At the second and last pit stop Storm needs to fix mechanical damage and loses more time behind Matze until he gets stuck in the gravel at Turn 5. At this point, FPR | Matze is the new champion 2008. He is leading with more than a minute in front of 1stBFA|haelje and wins his third race in this season. DoKu.sermi almost took the second place away from haelje, but after a few contacts he has to back up.

The third place in the championship goes to spdo KiLl3r who finishes sixth after a start crash and a great race after that and in addition driving the fastest lap of the race. And we have with D. Klein on 5th for AGM Racing and davke for Team LT on 7th two drivers who scored the first points for their teams.

The second place in the constructors championship was saved by the North West Racing Team in front of spdo Racing and 1stBFA, who overtook Peregrinus in the final race. Both trophies of the season 2008 are going to Factory Phantom Racing!

IRT | Andy drives home first Innovate Racing Team Victory in OWRL F1

38 laps through fast corners and challenging chicanes, that was the race last weekend on one of the longest tracks, Aston Grand Touring reversed. The results from the practice sessions hinted at a close race, and the fight for the championship is still wide open with only 4 points distance between FPR | Matze and ^P^ Storm. At the end of the race IRT Andy proved to have the strongest nerves and took a well-deserved victory from pole, but not after falling back out of the top 3 and recovering. The fight for second position was between both championship rivals. In the exciting final stage of the race it was Matze who took the position and extended his lead over Storm with 2 points. With the distances between the top drivers never growing over 5 seconds, the spectators were offered a close and exciting race.

In the first qualifying it was all about driving one clean lap to proceed to the second session for the top 10 drivers. Because of the length of the track, not that many laps could be driven. In his first and final lap, Cyber|Rudy put in a 2:03.63. No other driver could make a lap in that time. With only 0.05 distance, IRT Andy showed that he should not be counted out at this track. With both championship rivals in the top 10 the final line-up for the second qualifying did not show much surprises, except for Cyber|Misko missing out. The one time OWRL Div A champion drove 2:05.38, only bringing him to P13. 1stBFA haelje was unlucky. His time was exactly the same as the driver in P10, but driven later so that he missed out on the top 10 qualifying. The only consolidation for the team was that it was the other driver, 1stBFA dislo, who was on P10 and proceeded to the second qualifying. The full results of Q1 can be found here

Going into Q2, Cyber|Rudy was the favourite for taking pole. But technical problems forced him to retire from the session before he could drive a single lap. Not being able to repair the problems in time, the Cyber team was down to one car for the race, leaving the unlucky Rudy sidelined. This meant that the fight for pole was wide open. IRT Andy stepped up and took the lead from early on in the session. In the end he took pole with a laptime of 2:05.44, just one tenth ahead of spdoFiredUp. ^P^ Storm got the upper hand over his championship rival FPR|Matze by qualifying 3rd. whereas Matze only managed to qualify on the 7th starting position. The statistics for the second qualifying session can be found here.

On to the race! No startcrash in the first corners, but the first incidents happened at the end of the long straight, resulting in a pit stop for SF|Damon and IRT 2slow4u. The other IRT driver, Andy, kept the lead after the start and lead the field for the full first stint, closely followed by spdoFiredup. OMC Jet and spdoKiLl3r both put a lot of pressure on ^P^ Storm and even though he did not let go of his position without a fight, Storm finally had to concede. This gave him his direct opponent Matze on his tail. At the end of lap 10, the first drivers went to the box. The two leaders were among those with the lightest fuel load and were in first. After the different tactics sorted them out by lap 15, the field was back in order. FiredUp overtook Andy in the pit lane and was now leading the race. In between them were KiLl3r and Storm. The top five, finalized by FPR|Matze, was close together. KiLl3r showed that making a mistake in such a close group was fatal for your own race. In lap 18 he failed to keep his car on track in one of the fast corners, got some damage and had to make an extra pitstop. He was able to finish the race, but outside of the points and in P10. His teammate did had a similar fate in this race. Whilst leading, FiredUp was too fast entering pit lane for his second pitstop and the resulting Drive Through penalty brought him out of contention for the podium.

The top three after the last series of pitstops was ^P^ Storm ahead of IRT Andy and FRP|Matze. But Storm could not block the faster IRT driver and lost the lead 8 laps before the end. Andy hold on to his lead and won his first OWRL F1 race, just a few races after IRT entered the championship mid-season. Storm now had Matze on his tail. Matze, not wanting to let Storm close him down in the championship, was determined to get past. And he did so, with only five laps to go. The gap is now 6 points. Just outside the podium finished OMC Jet. spdoFiredUp still drove home a fifth place finish but left wondering what could have been. P6 went to 1stBFA haelje, with the final two point scoring positions going to OWRL F1-debutant NWRT Asman and Cyber|Misko. The final results are posted online here. Also take a look at the championship standings and the replays.

OWRL F1 - spdo KiLl3r takes debut OWRL F1 victory at FE Black
Krutch
S2 licensed

OWRL F1 continued this weekend at Fern Bay Black, a very demanding and long track. The expectation, based on last years race, that this would be a race full of incidents and accidents came true. Twelve out of twenty drivers withstood the challenges of the track and finished the one and a half hour race. #15-spdoKilL3r took the victory, but he only got that after an eventful day.

But as usual everything started with the 1st qualifying. Due to the sheer length of the track not as many flying laps could be done as at other tracks. Taking the chance when the drivers could have a good lap was essential. World record holder Rudy van Buren, participating in the #24 Cyber Racing entry this weekend, fulfilled the expectations and took fastest time im Q1 with 1:49.42. Both FPR-drivers did make the jump in the top 10 qualifying, just as both 1stBFA-drivers. Also in the top 10 were #27-FRO|Hibex, 18–DoKu|dcToro, #15–spdo|KiLl3r, #3-^P^|Storm and #5–OMC|Jet. The full Q1 results can be found here.

For the second qualifying was expected that most drivers would bet on a 3-stop strategy in the race for the purpose of a high starting position. With overtaking being very difficult at this track, a good starting position is key. #24-cyber|Rudy immediatly drove to pole in his first lap, and his 1:51.48 would not be beaten. The fight was on for the rest of the top ten. The leader in the championship #1-FPR|Matze was beaten by his teammate #2-FPR|Aldi. Unlucky was #3-^P^Storm. The second placed driver in the championship got involved in an incident with #18-DoKu|dcToro and landed his car on the top. As he had token R2-tyres for his fastest lap, he had to use shift-p to change back to racing tyres. As the rules stated that made him start from the box, not mkaing his chase for the tile easier. #27-FRO|Hibex took fourth starting place ahead of #8-1stBFA|filo, who just liked Storm landed upside down during on of his qualifying laps. Unlike Storm he still had R3 fitted so he did not need to pit and could take his starting position. Tthe full results of the second qualifying session can be found here.

One thing was common for all drivers in the race: none of the 20 drivers would overcome the 1h30 minute race without making a mistake. At the start all drivers came through the first corners with nothing except a few small bits of contact. But after that the first off track excursions – often resulting in contact with a wall – happened and some drivers needed to stop for repairs in the first few laps of the race. At the front #24-cyber|Rudy put down an amazing pace, which only could be somewhat followed by #2-FPR|Aldi. But in lap 3 Rudy’s made his first mistake, a 180°-spin, allowing Aldi to overtake him for the lead. #1-FRP|Matze was handed a Drive Through-penalty for avoidable contact with Filo in the first few laps, handed out after investigation of the replay of the start by the OWRL marshals. #14-spdo|FiredUp was also penalized with a DT for contact with Schum and Misko. But he got his penalty exactly in the lap in which he planned his first pit stop. Without having the fuel for an extra lap and not being able to stop for fuel he was forced to retire. #8-1stBFA|Filo turned his car upside down and almost took Misko with him. #24-cyber|Rudy also retired shortly before his first stop as he had to avoid a collision with a backmacker by stranding in the gravel trap. #2-FPR|Aldi had build up a decent lead but also was the first driver who had to make a regular pitstop.

The time diagrams of the three podium finishers showed that even those drivers had their difficulties and incidents during the race:Most drivers opted for a 3 stop strategy, but often had to make their stops earlier due to damage inflicted by incidents and the high curbs of the chicanes at FE Black. #1-FPR|Matze was a victim of the fast right hander in the 2nd split and had to end his race. It looked like #3-^P^Storm would take important points out of this race despite his start from pitlane. He drove up to P5. But in lap 37 he had a big moment in the fast chicane just after the first split. Barely being able to keep his car on track, he drove back to the pits for repairs and fresh tyres only to have to retire later on due to a disconnect. With both championship contenders failing to score points it remaind a close race to the 2008 title.

At the end of the race the top three of the race were bunching up together to fight it out for the race win. #2-FPR|Aldi, #15-spdo|KiLl3r and #29-IRT|Andy were in fighting distance from eachother and the final lap would decide the victor. Andy tried to go for the win but ended up upside down after an incident in the first sector chicane. He still finished seventh as the first driver one lap down. One driver especially took profit from Andy’s misfortune. #27-FRO|Hibex took his and his teams’ first podium in just his second race. Up front Aldi tried to keep the pressure up on race leader KilL3r but found it quite hard to do that in the last couple of meters without fuel in his tank. He still coasted to a second place finish. After a tense couple of laps #15-spdo|KiLl 3r could finally relax and take the finish line in a celebratory style. It was his first victory in OWRL F1. Behind the podium KilL3r, Aldi and Hibex, fourth place went to #28-IRT|2slow4u, taking important points for his team in their second race. #7-1stBFA|haelje took a fifth place finish after an eventful first half of the race. The rest of the points went to #21-NWRT|VeTeR, Andy as described and #10-SF|Damon. The Race results, the actual championship standings and the Replays are available.

It was an eventful race which in the end did not change the top of the championship table. KiLl3r jumped to third, but still is 14 points behind Matze. Unless he can go for a repeat victory at the next race, Aston Grand Touring reverse, the title hunt looks to be between Matze and Storm!

I'd be interested as well so you can put me down on the list.

You guys certainly want to post this on www.simracing.nl as well as that is were the Dutch league is hosted. Also, there is a meeting of that community in SimWorld in Haarlem this month. There are only a few places left and up to now, not many 'LFS'ers' have signed up. Simworld only has rFactor (except for the Force Dynamics 301 of course!) but sim racing with 30 at the same location is great fun regardless of the sim.

And don't forget to sign up for the dutch league starting on 11th September here.

For this meeting, the location of the track ist mir egal.

As OWRL F1 gets in the closing stages of the season, the Open Wheel Racing League starts its next endeavour with S2 Season 13. Using its praised Div A/B league system, the pre-qualified Div A drivers fight on the ferocious LFS tracks in the Formula V8. Div B alternates between the Formula BMW and Formula XR. Starting on 20th September, 6 races will decide who will be crowned the next two OWRL champions!

The previous Div A season was dominated by Storm Cloud, but with an influx of new drivers and him in a championship battle in OWRL F1, this season is up for grabs. Drivers can qualify for Div A by finishing in the top 7 of the Div B standings. After three races in this season, the top 3 of the Div B drivers also have the option to move up to Div A for the remainder of the season.

(image by IvRT~Timurrrr, click for larger version)

With the addition of the Formula BMW, there are now two low-powered formula cars that both allow for close racing and have proven to be a good training ground for the Formula V8 and F1 car. After one season with the FBM and one with the FOX, OWRL will now use both in the same season by alternating between both cars. Div A will continue to use the FO8.

Calendar for S2 Season 13 below, including the car that will be used for the Div B races.

R1 20-09: Fern Bay Gold (FBM)
R2 04-10: Westhill Int (FOX)

OWRL F1 - FPR|Matze continues his winning streak

Superior restart after summer break

After the two month summer break the next round was a fight for the points on the well-known Blackwood GP track. Despite the long break only 14 drivers showed up to the event, nevertheless great skill was needed on track to gain points. With the pole position in Top10-qualy #1 - FPR|Matze laid the foundation for his terrific lights-to-flag victory, although he was challenged strongly at the end. So #1 - FPR|Matze's strong performance gives hima second consecutive victory and also the lead in the championship.

The first qualy session was the fight to get into the Top Ten. With 0:54.11 #15 - spdo|KiLl3r set the best time in this session, with a gap of 0.04 seconds to #24 - cyber|scipy. Here you can find the overview with the times for all drivers.

In the Top10-qualy session the drivers must use race fuel so the first hints of their strategy can be seen. Blackwood GP is a track where both 2-stop or 3-stop stategies can be good for the victory. All drivers proceeded as normal and changed to R2 tyres to nail down their fastest laps with the race set. Close to the end #1 - FPR|Matze overhauled #21 - NWRT|VeTeR with a time of 0:55.41 and took the pole position. The second row was filled with #24 - cyber|scipy followed by #15 - spdo|KiLl3r with a gap of only 0.01 seconds. Here you can find the overview of the Top10-qualy session.

At the beginning of the race #1 - FPR|Matze was able to hold his first place and with a fast pace he was able to increase the gap together with #24 - cyber|scipy. Unfortunately a spin in lap 4 caused #24 - cyber|scipy to fall to 11th place. Also #15 - spdo|KiLl3r recovered after a small mistake to resume the fight. Thus there was a hard fight for position 3 with #3 - ^P^|Storm, #5 - OMC|Jet and #21 - NWRT|VeTeR involved, with a sad end for #21 - NWRT|VeTeR spinning after contact in lap 11.

After half of the race you could able to see the strategies take shapeand without mistakes both 2-stop or 3-stop seemed to be good for victory. In the last third #25 - cyber|Misko with his 2-stop strategy was able to put a lot of pressure on the leader #1 - FPR|Matze, closing the gap to 0.39 seconds at the finish line, but he was just short of his first victory of the season.

Third place goes to #21 - NWRT|VeTeR showing up a clean performance and together with his team mate, they got 7 points for the team championship. Factory Phantom Racing gained 10 points through #1 - FPR|Matze and they lead the teams' championship. #3 - ^P^|Storm dropped to 2nd place in the drivers' championship with his 6th place here. #1 - FPR|Matze gains the lead of the drivers' championship and leads by 6 points. This race was set up because we had no LFS races so far this year on Simracing.NL and as a fundraiser for a project in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in Africa. Participants are asked to make a donation for this project which involves, among others, oprhan care.

SimWorld, the Dutch Simracing centre, decided to sponsor this event with two sessions in their G-Driver Experience (with the Force Dynamics 301) as prizes!

With this event being on July 1st in under a week from the LFS World Series race, one of the races involve the FBM @ Aston Club. The Dutch drivers will be better prepared than anyone else trying to make up a two points deficit to the Germans for the lead in the championship!
