My mistake - I read the OP as the icon appeared after he'd played and hadn't gone away since. Re-reading it sounds more like it appears every time he plays for a while, and given that the HD only has a few GB left, if the widget is updating, pagefile would be the likely cause.

Could actually be anything from a genuine Windows warning to some spyware really. Have you checked the processes for anything unusual? Does it appear as soon as you startup, and if so does it do it for all users and in safe-mode?

Congrats to all the people happy with their GCSE's. I can't even remember what mine were because it's been so long since I've needed to refer to them... it was 15 years ago

Quote from JTbo :
I certainly am not friend of hot food, my tasting sensitivity is so high that often I can't eat pizza from those pizza places as those are too hot.

These I like, are good for pizza, but anything hotter than that starts to burn

I feel sorry for you, especially tomorrow then...

Quote from sgt.flippy :Dude, it's leaking

Nah, just the joys of a rotary unit - perhaps I did exaggerate a little, but its fuel use in traffic is horrible I can get close to 250 miles on a tank if the roads are relatively clear, with some traffic I'm lucky to get 200.

Currently driving an '05 RX-8 (230PS version).
This won't be around much longer though because of it's drinking habit, which I could live with if it didn't seem to use as much fuel stuck in traffic at 10mph as it does at 70mph

Thanks for all the replies - I agree that not actively thinking about a corner is the best way to drive in LFS or real life, in this case the conscious thinking about that approach is what's undoing me. What I wasn't able to decide was whether there is a better or recommended way to correct a bad line on a corner (this isn't so much an LFS question as general racecraft).
Should I practice being in the correct position on entry and work on my turn-in, or gradually move from my current line to the wider one? Should I consider changing the setup of the car while I'm dealing with this corner?
My concern is that if I spend time doing it one way this may be a waste of effort as it's not going to work out no matter how many laps I put in.

I've had LFS a week or so, and tried an online race for the 1st time earlier this week. I was way off the pace, so decided to go back and focus more on my technique.
I've been trying Aston Cadet reverse in the FOX, and have been gradually increasing the speed, but I'm having difficulty translating what I can see on the replay analyser to my actual driving.
I've compared my laps to a couple on the WR (not the ultimate fastest) and the particular corner I'm struggling with is T1, the right hander. My normal line takes me not enough over to the left to square the corner off and this is costing me a good bit of speed for the run uphill.
If I focus too much on positioning for that turn I usually end up braking late and missing the apex, or turning early and clipping the inside both of which usually end in a spin.
I've noticed I can take it OK at a slower speed, but the characteristics change quite a bit as I increase speed leading to one of the two things I mentioned happening.
Any suggestions as to how to correct my misguided brain, would it be worth running lots of downforce to help take it, or is it better to run my current setup and scrub some speed and build back to racing speed?

If anyone is on the fence and thinking of Vista one word of warning, as it's not exactly in big glowing letters. The OEM version is much cheaper (as usual) but any significant hardware change will result in a call to MS to get it re-activated. I had an OEM copy and simply changing the power supply resulted in it de-activating itself.
If you plan on doing regular upgrades I'd avoid OEM unless you don't mind the hassle. If you have the OEM on a pre-built box I'd imagine you'll be in the same boat.

ps. I have to say they didn't complain when I did re-activate, but it's something I couldn't be bothered with every time I changed something.

Quote from pb32000 :Not quite sure how you worked that one out. System ram limit isn't affected by graphics card ram, and furthermore Vista 32bit can support more than 4GB ram anyway so there's not really an issue.

I have tried 4GB in 32-bit Vista -

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929605/en-us

That should answer questions you raise - note the description of the 1st 4GB of memory space being used for all system devices as well as the actual system memory, so with an 8800GTX and an x-fi I was down to 2.5GB reported RAM with 4GB fitted.

Quote from anik360 :And finally its about choosing the right flavour. Get ultimate if you can and get x64 btw its no difference if you get x86 or x86-64 because if you dont have 64 bit apps; it's useless to have 64 bt for that. im hearing jakg's typing with his kb right about now.

64-bit has one big advantage in either XP or Vista (particularly helps Vista though) and that is the ability to go beyond 4GB system RAM. Wth video cards approaching, if not, 1GB that leaves you around a 3GB max on a 32-bit OS. With Vista 64 you can assume 2GB will be eaten rather quickly, so this is a big plus.

I've got Vista ultimate (installed in x64 flavour) but, due to not having a copy of x64 XP and running a dual-boot for some apps, I'm unable to get the best out of it because I can't put the extra RAM in.

I got a home hub (mainly because it came with package) and it's OK I guess.
The phones work reasonably well, the router is ok, though it only has 2 ethernet ports.

Does anyone use one? is it good or bad?

It's OK

Do they work with media streamers properly? (my dad has a Netgear MP101 streamer)

Never tried, can't see why it wouldn't

Does it have a built-in firewall?

Yes

Can I forward ports easily if needed?

Yes (including a DMZ option)

Does the phone through the internet take up much bandwidth? (ie. will it lag me out of online games when my mum uses the phone?)

I can't tell when they are being used - so not much.

Does it have UPnP abilities?

Yes, though I haven't tried them.

All in all I would say if it's a freebie, then go for it, but don't spend if you already have, or can pick up a decent modem/router. The 3com I had before I got the home hub worked just as well, albeit without the phone, and had more ethernet ports.

For me ATI always seem to run into driver issues with key bits of software (I think they used to cut corners when they developed drivers/hardware). Nvidia and ATI were both caught out with Vista, but ATI have a legacy of this. I've run Nvidia since they made the GeForce 2 and I've been very satisified with performance and reliability. I do know people who swear by ATI though.

Probably would be with the rest of the system - I'd say it just depends on A) whatever else you use the system for and B) what resolution you intend to run at. From what I've seen so far the GFX in my system isn't getting overly taxed on LFS (it's an 8800GTX) but in games like FPS's it does, especially at 1680x1050 which is my monitors native.
The new ATI's offer a much more competitive price-point for performance IMO - but I have a dislike for ATI personally.

Looks a little bit like a BT23C, but without seeing the engine detail it's hard to be sure.

There's a lot to pick from in that era, so could be a few from http://www.race-cars.com/utility/brabhamr.htm

EDIT: it's not the 23 because of the age, but it's a similar style

Case: Thermaltake Tai-Chi (with watercooling for CPU)
O/S: Windows XP SP2 (I have Vista on another drive it doesn't get anything serious run on it - just work )

Monitor: Philips 220W 20" Widescreen
Controllers: Logitech - G5, G15 & G25

I run at 1680x1050 and it seems to do OK .

I think the performance is still very relative at this stage . I can actually lap better with the sequential and auto-clutch because there's less to go wrong, but it feels a bit less like I'm in control. Maybe I can understand why Clarkson hates 'flappy-paddles' now...

I'll go with my plan of learning tracks with the sequential then moving over - thanks for the reply.
Controls and effect on the cars

I got hold of LFS last night and started to take a few of the cars out to get used to them. I have a Logitech G25 and I tried using sequential and the regular shifter, and also with and without the clutch aid.

I spent a little time in the XFGTR and, one thing I noticed was that I seemed to be capable of better splits with manual clutch and gears than the sequential box with auto-clutch. Is this by design (I mean is there built-in performance loss from using the assisted clutch and/or sequential) or was it that I just drove better or more naturally with manual 'box and clutch?

The thing I found, and expected, was that I had more control manually shifting - with the penalty of it also being easier to get it all wrong - but the fact that I could do a relatively easy, in terms of not much braking, section of track quicker this way was a surprise (at least for very early attempts).
I'd like to know because if there is no performance penalty for using various aids then I'll probably try to learn tracks with them on, then move to manual shifting once I'm comfortable. If there is a loss then I'll try to learn in manual as it will just make improvement harder to determine.

Any comments/suggestions appreciated.
Apologies if this is covered in another thread, but searching seemed to get lots of hits for things like traction control, ABS etc.

Hi, I got the licence last night. I'm looking forward to getting some practice in to get my laptimes less than 6 seconds off the pace so I can go online!
