Quote from tristancliffe :I totally understand that cooler, denser fuel might save a hundredth of a second in refuelling time, or maybe a tenth. But I can't see how it would produce more power. Besides, the fuel will warm up pretty much immediately once in a warm fuel tank. You might get a performance advantage (if there is one) until the end of the pitlane.

I'm basing this on statements by Mike Gascoyne and Eddie Jordan, both have said there is an increase in horsepower due to running cooler fuel - Jordan claims this will last for perhaps 3 laps (a bit longer than the pit lane).

The colder fuel leads to better compression which will increase horsepower - figures of between 5 and 20bhp were quoted at the time by F1 engineers.

The fuel temp in the tank is not the variable they measure, it is the filler temp - this is the documented measurement that all the teams were aware of. The reason the filler was chosen was based on the practicality of obtaining a reading from a vehicle during refuelling.

I think Damon Hill sums up the situation best -

"I think it's very, very unlikely that Lewis will be Champion. We know who the 2007 World Champion is.

"But I think it's worth a shot, having a go, at least just to establish a principle. But I don't think it will change anything."

The principle, ie exactly how the FIA avoid punishing the drivers in this case, is what McLaren (and probably a few of the other constructors) want to find out - presumably so that the next time there's an infringement this case will be cited as precedence.

Jaguar only raced in primarily BRG whilst in Formula One, though their sportscars entered in a variety of schemes depending on sponsors.
I can't remember Toyota running anything other than their red and white livery either.

Why did SniffPetrol have to write this, surely that's just tempting fate with the FIA?

The last Prologue certainly wasn't full price in the UK, I think it retailed at £24.99 when PS2 titles retailed at I think £39.99. Which still wasn't a good price as it was considerably less than half a game.

Quote from Nathan_French_14 :The plate on my brothers subaru makes me laugh, its not a private one, only a personal one (says subaru with a border etc.) but you gotta admit, how cool is the plate for a normal one

M600 BAD

As for private plates, i love the plate on my dads escort cosworth. It says K5SSY, which would read KOSSY, and the plate on his sierra cosworth reads C055Y, which also reads COSSY.

The Sierra plate isn't a valid UK plate, unless it was COS 5Y which is on an Escort, not a Sierra - the other variant C0 SSY isn't listed as a valid plate either.

Back on topic - I've seen P5YCO on a 4x4 (Range Rover Vogue SE I think) which I know was worth quite a bit because it was available 4-ish years ago when I got my plate (just my initials).

Quote from BlueFlame :Well, not only do I know Man Utd fans, but I know the players, I work with Lee Martin

So - knowing Lee Martin gives you some authority on this?

I work with a number of Liverpool supporters, none were born in the city of Liverpool - do I use this as a basis for assuming that Liverpool support must come entirely from outside Liverpool and that most Liverpudlians support Everton? No.

You sit there supporting Manchester United when you don't live anywhere near Manchester, and let me tell you something, every TRUE person that lives in Manchester, supports Manchester City. Thats what British football is all about, supporting the team where you are from, well that is what it USED to be about... That's why I like Liverpool, it is the only team left with TRUE football passion, people who are foreign, support Liverpool because of the passion, not because we are winning.. I sit here talking to other LFC fans, getting a chill down our spine together when we hear our Anthem and the foreigners feel it too.. Manchester United don't have the same passion, Infact most of the MANU supports I know around here, are trying to impress someone else or are a wife-beater.

Lived in Manchester all 31 years of my life, supported United throughout (which included the 80's when we were lucky to win the odd FA cup). You talk complete crap about Mancunians only supporting Citeh, it depends almost entirely which part of Manchester you are from as to who you support, pretty much the same situation between Liverpool and Everton in that city.
I don't deny that 'glory-hunter' supporters followed us through our dominant years, just as Arsenal and Chelsea got them recently and Liverpool did through the 80's - the true fans of any club are as passionate as any other and remain when the success fades.
Is My G25 Dead?

I've read some of the posts here, and I couldn't find anyone who got past this problem. Basically over the weekend my G25 stopped working. I noticed something was up as soon as I powered on the PC and it didn't calibrate, now it just sits there with the power light blinking.
It works ok in profiler - but clearly no FFB because of the power light.

I've checked the connection in the back of the wheel, and the fuse in the plug, is it a fair assumption that the power pack is dead or is there anything else to check?

I've got an RMA ready with the vendor, but I thought it worth a shot here first as so many have them.

Quote from Dajmin :On the PC? Not a clue.

Byut GP'07 on the 360 is pretty good. It's not a sim in the way LFS is, but I think it handles pretty well. One stick is for acceleration and braking, the other is for body weight transfer. I think it works.

You can also control front/rear brakes independantly which really adds fun (and a teeny-tiny bit of realism).

From the article:

"We're sure that players will be as thrilled as we are when they get the chance to put their own driving skills to the test on the Top Gear Test Track in GT5, as well as enjoying classic episodes of Top Gear via GT TV," said Kazunori Yamauchi, president of the game's developers Polyphony Digital, in a statement.

Probably the most useful thing I could think of doing with regards to learning to drive (at least the UK test) would be the maneouvres like parrallel parking, 3-point turn and reversing round a corner.
With LFS you can at least get an idea of the car's reaction to different angles and steering input and understand the concept before you attempt it.

Quote from J_Matrix :Yes, FIA has pushed too much with judgements and now they are paying the price. About Dennis.. I guess McLaren is revolting inside his tomb, he was one of the most correct pilots and managers around, Dennis is damaging his name!

I think the whole of McLaren were being magnanimous in defeat when the result came through, only since then the officials independently found the irregularity in fuel and subsequently decided to take no action.

I think to say that Dennis is doing something to damage the team name by appealing isn't really the case here, and I don't think he even expects to win, but he would be remiss as the manager not to at least try given that it would hand the title to Lewis should the appeal be succesful. Any manager in this position would be doing exactly the same thing.

Quote from ajp71 :TBH Formula BMW is along way bellow F3, which now more than ever is a small single seater formula trying to play top level single seaters

My mistake - I typed equivalent when I meant to say that it provides the entry to F3 (at least in Asia).

What Leprekaun is actually looking at isn't that series though (as it's across the whole of Asia) it's more like a 'trainer' for that series.

I think in reality Leprekaun, without having some family/friends in a position to sponsor some of it, I'd agree that you'd be looking to pay for this then get real sponsorship should you be quick enough to get in the full Asian series.

I was under the impression renewable energy got the tag not because you are re-using some energy from a wasteful process but because you aren't relying upon a 'dirty' process involving fossil fuels or nuclear power.

What I'm saying is that harnessing some small percentage of a jet's wasted energy is no more a renewable source of energy than the 3rd cylinder in a triple-expansion steam engine.

The concept outlined, to me at least, is more akin to some sort of recycling of energy than renewable energy - so I'd be running this by the lecturer to ensure you aren't on to a bad project from the outset. If they are OK with the concept being a renewable energy source then go and do the maths.

This isn't a budget series - that figure is to attend ONE scholarship event. BMW loan you the car, overalls etc. and you go out and lap. The fastest guys (dependant on the event, and the nationalities involved - some events will only take one per nation) will be picked up and offered the $50,000US scholarship to help them get going and also given some sponsor contacts.
As I said they estimate (in the Asia series) that the 50K will account for about 35% of the season's budget.
I can't find details to hand of privateering costs for Asia, the BMW UK-based series' site has entry fee costs and car costs (the car alone is close to £40,000UK which according to xe.net is 450,000 Egyptian pounds).

This is much higher level than karting, it is the equivalent of F3.

Just to clarify, are you intending to try to get a BMW scholarship to get in or actually planning to just enter the Formula BMW Asia series?
If you're going to attempt to get the scholarship I'd focus on that for the moment rather than trying to get a sponsor (or pick a visor colour). Given that scholarship covers around 35% of the season's running costs I would be trying to get that 1st, otherwise you're looking at generating around $150,000US to do the series (based on 2007 figures).
You'll still need around $100,000US with the scholarship, but you'll get help from BMW with acquiring sponsors should you be successful.

Basically Nico Rosberg got help by entering in his dad's team, Mansell's kids are doing the same. Vettel had been karting since he was 8 and BMW probably have an option on him should they want him.

All in all, I wouldn't say this is the easiest, or cheapest formulae to start in for a complete novice, and the rewards seem to go to drivers that have sound backing to start with.

If you do get in then I wish you well, but it sounds a bit more involved than your post makes out.

I think the issue of team orders with this much at stake is irrelevant, neither Alonso or Hamilton would yield to the other without intervention physically.

It makes me wonder exactly what it would take for the FIA to cry foul though. Take the events of the Chinese GP, had Alonso had the shot tyres and slid off the track would they blame the team for not bringing him in early enough? Would a genuine mechanic's error in a pitstop hold up in any court of arbitration other than Mosley's circus?

If they damage Alonso's chances and Hamilton has another DNF for whatever reason that would send the title to Ferrari, and I think Ron would view Alonso the lesser of two evils in these circumstances. I can't see anything other than detonating Alonso's car as he approaches the chequered flag - with Hamilton just behind - as the only way to guarantee the result the Spanish media and the FIA believe he wants to engineer.

All things considered, if Kimi couldn't win the title then 'something' may happen to Alonso that warrants suspicion, but with Kimi still in the running I can't see them doing anything but setting both cars up for maximum performance.

I hope he does sue Mosley.

And as for this -
"Mosley has refused to retract his comments, however, telling autosport.com that Stewart’s views on the spying affair were “ill-informed” and “partisan” and suggesting that unpopularity among sections of the “British motorsport establishment” was a price he was prepared to pay for upholding the governing body’s integrity."

Someone should make it clear that to uphold integrity you have to be capable of displaying some in the first place.

Traded in my RX-8 and got an MX-5 2.0 Sport, which I picked up yesterday. I really like the RX-8 but it was just a bit too thirsty and, as I used the back seats three times in two years, I decided to go smaller.

Will post a pic as soon as it stops raining (so that'll probably be July).

I think (as you seem to be leaning towards the Integrale) you've got to ask why people are asking upwards of £12K for theirs and what the difference is going to be to a £6K example of one.
A few have already covered the pitfalls - especially if it's relied on for your job then you could be asking for trouble, Lancia's were notorious for problems even when new.

Don't know if you've considered the Audi S3? Might not be as 'raw' as the Lancia but build quality and engine durability is massively better. With a good look round you may get one of the early ones inside your £6K.
I was very close to getting an S3 around 2 years back and decided to go with a Civic Type-R in the end - basically 2 year old Audi vs. brand new Civic and I went with the new car.

Quote from dropin_biking :Monkey Mike, I understand what you were saying. That in particular bugged me a little because I had to make a choice of going full-out automotive language, or keep it relatively simple for the normies I really should have spent more time figuring out that situation.

The thing is that if you can capture an audience with the terminology in, then it's no bad thing - you can't write something that pleases everyone (not even the god-awful Harry Potter is universally loved). A couple of people have shown appreciation for your piece, which in my opinion indicates you have made a connection with them.
If you get downgraded for this aspect of the content or the theme (provided there was an open scope when you were handed the assignment) point the teacher here to those comments. Regardless of their academic background they liked it. It won't protect you from the kind of points that Lateralus raised, but it does go some way to justify your choice on the tech-speak.
