Quote from dadge :also the g25 has two types of sequential. the switch on the gear unit (so it's like BTCC sequential) and the flappies (ferrari enzo type)

On a similar subject, it is a bit of a pain to switch between gated-shifter and BTCC mode.

When you switch from shifter to sequential the clutch automation settings change, but the gear "buttons" don't (The shifter registers each gear position as a button press). This means if you try to use the stick for sequential you actually just bounce between third and fourth gears, you have to reset your shift up/down buttons to correct this. Works fine for paddles though as these generate different button numbers to the shifter.

Maybe I should add this to improvement suggestions, unless someone already has.

Quote from dadge :i always thought that if the car had road tyres you would use the H-shifter and their track counterparts (UFR XFR FXR FZR XRR) would use the H in sequential mode (FOX too). and then the flappies would be for the rest (BF1 F08 MRT).

This makes sense to me. Do you still use the clutch pedal with (UFR XFR FXR FZR XRR)? I'm not 100% sure how sequential stick shifts work. I've read on here that cars like the Aussie V8s *can* shift without clutch in higher gears, just by lifting off a little. This suggests that the rest of the time they must use a clutch pedal?

I guess LFS does simulate this because IIRC if you don't press the clutch you can still shift but you have to match revs.

Quote from auch_enne :I guess he is not asking about the options he has within LFS, but what would be used on the track nowadays.. as in real GTR cars, do they use, sequential, paddles or stick? Do they have a clutch pedal or not? Etc.

auch_enne is right, I should have been clearer in my first post, I meant which should I be using if I want to be closest to simulating real-life. Obviously the cars don't have real-life counterparts but I'm sure Scawen will have had a specific shift-type in mind for each car.

In fact he has spoken about how sequential gearboxes aren't currently modelled properly, so I guess we'll find out when he gets on to that.

I can't find a thread on this, but is there a definitive list (for those with G25s or other shifter/clutch setups) of what type of gear shift would be used in each type of car?

I guess it's

Paddles: BF1 (+ FZ5?)

Sequential: GTR cars + MRT5 + Other Formula cars

Shifter: all others

Also should I still be using clutch pedal with sequential stick shift? I know in real life the MRT5 uses a lever on the gear stick for clutching.

Maybe this should be added to the Cars page in the LFS manual.

Quote from MAGGOT :Does anyone else have trouble heel-toeing with a G25?

I still do it though. The most annoying thing I find is I'm tending to lift off the brake more than i want to just to get my foot up to the accellerator.

I also have trouble in 6 gear cars with knocking it out of 6th gear, but that's just because my desk is restrictive.

I wonder if the bolt spacing on the pedals is the same as in a real car? Might be able to replace the pedals with wider ones. Having said that there is a little lip on the accelerator, and it's probably OK in shoes.

I don't really want to wear shoes though, because there's less resistance than in a real car you don't get enough feel in shoes.

I vote for "rev match the clutch/flywheel". The synchros do their work when you push the gear lever into the required gear, before you start lifting the clutch, at which point the dog teeth are engaged.

The main reason for matching being that otherwise the tyres have to do the work of spinning the engine up to speed, in addition to gripping the road, which could push them over their limit of grip.

I may well be wrong though!

I've tried slipping the clutch when the revs drop too low (when using a longer 1st gear). That seems to be amazingly slow. I guess this probably mirrors real life as dumping the clutch seems to be the norm.

1. My current car, 528i. Everything I need for very little money!

2. Previous car, 1.8 MX-5. Fantastic car, I do miss it despite the fact that everyone said I looked stupid in it! Like Donkey Kong from Mario Kart apparently!

3. Before that, E30 325i. Tremendous fun, just a little unpredictable and scary, both in terms of wet-weather handling and reliability!

Good times!

Anyway I'm looking forward to some good racing on this server, but I'm going to need a bit of practice with the G25 shifter etc. before I'm competitive. 2 years out doesn't do great things to your lap-times!

Keep up the good work. GTT FTW [etals:]
