Funnybear, do not put Steve McQueen in one line/sentence/paragraph with console jocks or whatever you call them

this is highly insultive for a man who was trully dedicted to motorsport...

this kind of info could lead to endless "logical" speculations like:
1. the devs work with WV over Scirocco in LFS -> Audi is in the same group -> lots of us want Le Mans prototypes -> so Audi R10 for LFS is just around the corner
2. quie a lot of BMW in LFS, right? -> BMW runs in WTCC -> lots of drivers in LFS like WTCC cars -> voila, the WTCC BMW is almost certain
or...
3. Rockingham is coming to LFS -> there are V8 Supercars for hire there -> we like V8 Supercars here -> they announce new car with Rockingham -> then it must be a V8 Supercar

you could speculate like that almost with any kind of info about any kind of cooperation beteween LFS devs and any company, and in the end it would not mean anything at all

first of all don't be intimidated, I am not, never

I do race from time to time only, most of the time with my well known friends, but when I go on public server I just drive and learn my speed... a good idea, like some said before is to choose a car you drive most, FOX is a good choice as quite a lot of people drive it on-line, and once you are comfortable with the car learning the tracks is much easier

unless you are expecting wins only, in this case LFS is indeed very, very intimidating, and that's the best thing about it

and all of this just because Flavio has told one of his drivers to do what he does best... so he did

the Rockingham thing is kind of taking all the attention... but let's put it this way:

you can now vote, for the t-shirts, that you can actually wear one day while visiting Rockingham for a drive, so don't miss that opportunity

the textures look great, wonder if the old tracks will get some update on texture quality also...

yes, yes, yes

it could go minimized even all by itself, after let's say 15 seconds

the nice place to display it (as a small 'P' letter icon) would be the drivers list, so everyone can see it next to the gap times.. quite a usefull information

there was also an idea once of putting pit stops information in there, all this together would make a very, very nice add-on, especially for longer races

the full info about drivers in the race could be:
gap | penalty notification | name | number of pit stops done
0:20 | P | drivername | 0
0:14 | drivername | 1

if only the interior of the car stayed normal and the blur was on the moving objects, than it would give much better and much real effect, could be really nice with some proper, not to agressive settings...

I do know that it's a trick and that's why it is working like it is for LFS, but will never understand why they did it like that in NFS... but as I don't play NFS I don't have to worry about it

Quote from zeugnimod :This won't be representative anyway if ALL PBs are included since some people drove just one lap on a combo and have a PB of 60 minutes which will drag the average down.

this has nothing to do with average values, it's about distribution, range, deviation...

made a small "example" of what I had in mind, because I realized it's quite hard to get the idea without any statistics background

so there is a sample chart in the attachment, the red colour is your PB on a combo

I think it would be most interesting for newer and "average fast" drivers

well it doesn't really matter if someone did 1000 of laps with a restricted car or on a cruise server.. because we are talking about PBs only here... and if someone really did his PB with a restricted car? than this is his proper PB and it should be counted as one

this is only statistics, and that's how it works

Quote from Victor :PB times can be cheated, or influenced by wind / shortcutting / bumping / drafting / etc so charts are useless, but plain comparisons with other racers of your own choice might be nice to have again.

hmmm, the question is if the amount of the all the types of "illegal" PBs is so big to influence the overall result? will it really matter in showing if you are within 5%, 20% or 50% of the fastest drivers on a combo? if so, and you should know the best how big the error would be, than it is really not worth it, but if it could still give some kind of image, to see it on the median chart then maybe?

comparisons with other racers also would be great, but IMO, even more affected by the problems you mentioned, when you compare to "illegal" lap one to one then it is 100% of your data, if you compare with the whole database, then the "illegals" are only a certain percent of your data...

just thought of a new charts for LFSWorld

a chart that will show you how does your PB on certain combo stand in comparison with all other racers, so:

x: lap times
y: number of drivers
(both data with some clever aggregation of course)

the graphical outcome would be similiar to the History charts in Racers&Hosts online section with, for example, a red line in the place where you laptime is, the chart itself could be opened by a small button next to your PB

there was quite a similiar suggestion for hotlaps once (yes did the search ) but: hotlaps are not representative, only a small fraction of drivers upload them, they are selected, and so on... and PBs are a huge database, it would give you the info not only how far are you from the WR, but how do you compare with the average laptime achieved online on that combo

the SQL performace issues could also be solved quite easily by preparing the global data let's say weekly instead of performing a full search for every chart call, but that's a complete different story...

the real question is if anyone, except me, wolud like to compare his PB not only with the WR, but also with the whole PBs data, on a single chart

Quote from Darkkness :I run my ASUS M50SA on vista, over a Linksys WRT160N and don't have any lag issues at all.

The truth is there will never be a total agrement in this thread, because the number of variations of hardware/software/network providers/other factors makes it simply impossible...

But IMO there is one thing we could agree on: if you are on WiFi, and you experience some lagging from time to time, chcek it with the cable first, before blaming others. And if it solves the problem stay with the cable, even if it was from time to time only. Nothing more.

Quote from Degats :If some but not all seem to be lagging, it's generally an idication that their connection to the server is worse than yours. If everyone else seems to be lagging, then it's almost certainly you, not them.

The server was my machine, so my connection was kind of... perfect We wanted to check if there is any difference betwen WiFi and LAN cable by hosting two games on the same machine with different connections. It was everybody else lagging while trying to connect to a WiFi machine.

the result was simply devastating for WiFi... I did not expect such a difference myself...

I know that hosting a game is quite an extreme example, but if there was no difference between WiFi and cable, than why shouldn't a host with WiFi work?

Quote from skstibi :I suppose you have a 30 meter cable you can send me?

30 meter cable? You are having quite a long distances to anywhere over there in New Zealand

for me quite an interesting info would be if the new tyre physics was developed with future wet weather driving support in mind...

that would mean that introducing wet weather in the future would not require any unwanted changes in car's behaviour on dry surface, just extending the model not changing it again...

but thats pure wishfull thinking combined with speculation

Quote from dutchshogun :Lags which have occured, were 90% not me, so, i'd say:if you have a decent connection, it's ok.

You are never sure who is causing the lag during a race, you almost always see it as it's the other guy's fault... during my check it looked like everyone else was lagging but it all changed when I changed my connection...

the cable is cheap and plugging it in takes about 1 second, and using WiFi does not make the racing experience any more modern or cool... it causes it to lag...

I did some comparison between WiFi and LAN by hosting 2 games on my machine
the conditions for WiFi where: ASUS N50Vn, D-Link Di-524, only this one computer in the network at the time, distance from laptop to router: 1,5 m, system Vista. so in general perfect conditions with new hardware and software
6 cars in the race, all of them on cables, all players in the same city

the result: LAGGGGGGGGING like hell, people crashing...

the same people and hardware except for LAN instead of WiFi... smooth and clean session, no lagging for anyone... not a single lag

of course I should repeat it a few times to make it statistically correct but... I don't care, I will simply plug the cable and enjoy smooth racing

didn't try with other version so far
the insim should not be an issue, using LFSRelax with no problems, port opened for 100%
runnig hosted games on the same machine and no problems with firewall so far
and the system is.. Vista , already tried runnig it in compablility modes but nothing changed

I'm runnig a home network with 2 comps, that is where the ip: 192.168.0.120 comes from, from the router.. if it can have any meaning..

sure it wolud be nice if they were better, just like with everything.. but all the improvements related to driving itself are more important to me

but if we are talking about the acuraccy of the driver model I think that improving the arms, legs and hands would have much more positive impact on the game looks

I can't make it work.. must be doing something wrong...

I get two types off error instead of connecting to LFS, dependig on IP i use in the config file:
1. if I use the ip: 192.168.0.120 (from my ipconfig output) i get an error from attachment 1
2. if I use the ip: 127.0.0.1 (the standard for localhost...) i get attachment 2
config file edited with notepad, saved as Unicode, other settings (except for admin password of course) untouched

Is there any step by step guide how to set it up properly that I missed?

LFSRelax for example is running perfectly so it sholudn't be any poblem connected to InSim/ports themself

99,9% sure it's the resolution issue, just like mhartma5 wrote before

start the computer
connect to TV
then start LFS in Windowed mode (set "Start Windowed 1" in cfg.txt)
and when it starts go to screen options and set the res you have on your TV

would be nice if LFS could recognize if the display res is to low for it's internal settings, and change it automatically instead of just showing an error, but it doesn't so you have to get in there through windowed mode and change the res manually

if I was so serious about racing, and was to spend sooo much money on equipment to get this "real" experience I wolud not go for fancy hardware + LFS but for a real second-hand racing car and some entry level racing series

and this is the difference between a sim and reality...

some kind of pit box notification would made pitting much easier and real, and that would be a plus
it coud be done in a quite simple way, when you enter the pit lane the server picks a first free pit box for you and shows a big sign with your helmet design and name in front of it, so that you simply stop at it, and you get the message with the pit box number assigned to you
