If its been assembled as a half arse job, then the derailleur probably won't even be configured correctly, so it'll just jump. If you know what you're doing, a few minutes with a screwdriver does the trick, or if you aren't comfortable doing that, just take it to a bike shop.

Also, if you're in the inner chainring and the outer cog, it'll make the chain so bent it'll hop back over. Try changing into the middle/outer ring and a middle cog.

So you'll hack both sides up, and have to buy two new ones for twice the price?

I agree, it would help and stop posts like these (nothing wrong with them, just theres so many relatively simple ones that could be automatically cured) and make the LFS experience better, and more professional if it can diagnose itself.

I got this problem with my sound drivers. It was through Windows Update, so I went directly to the speaker manufacturer and downloaded clean drivers there, and all is good.

I suggest you try the same.

Well a £500 should be pretty good, and a nice build too, and seeing as its £100 off, even better.

Also, show models are usually built properly to show them off and make them more desirable, rather than slight half-assed jobs round the back of the shop, and any small dings or scratches that are there now, you'll just add to them in 6 months and it won't make a slight bit of difference. In fact, less paint = lighter = faster!
