Both will have its fanboys...

I think technically the PS3 is newer, and a tiny bit more "up to date"

TBH I would go with what the majority of your friends have. Me and my friends have always had PlayStation.

Haven't played but all the reports on multiplayer is that free roam is free roam same as single player. So from that I would imagine yes you can pull over at a bar.

All the other ones came to PC almost a year later....so I would expect that. But yeah, you should get it eventually.

Quote from DragonCommando :Engine braking is caused by the vacuum of the intake system, because the engine needs to speed up and the throttle is closed, vacuum increases, this increases resistance on the piston face when it lowers on the intake stroke.

Its not really having anything to do with the engine needing to speed up. The engine only is speeding up while you rev matchout.

Engine/compression braking comes from atmospheric pressure in the crank case acting on the back of a piston as it tries to pull a vacuum against the closed throttle plate. The engine isn't speeding up, its trying to keep its speed, not accelerate but doing work against the pressure outside of the cylinder draws energy from the rotation of the engine and it slows.

Also, race cars generally do engage each gear going down into a corner, thats why you hear a rev to match each gear as they shift into it. If they weren't putting it into gear and letting the vacuum slow the engine through each gear they wouldn't have to keep rev matching each gear.

Also "Brake balance on a race car is set up to get the most out of both the rear and front wheel's traction at all times, adding a braking force to the rear wheels isn't going to magicaly give them more grip."
Optimal tuning takes this into consideration, thats part of what optimal is.

Quote from Michel 4AGE :Wow that F1 car looks like it's glued to the track lol. I don't even see a little bit of understeer/oversteer, it's like planted on the track lol.
It looks.. clinical (?)

Have you watched ANY of 2008?
And yes, even in years before that the cars over and understeered, though computer gizmos kept it to a minimum if you watch you could still see the cars twitch.

Quote from lalathegreat :oversteer = realistic?

In a car with over 900hp and down around 1k LBS that is driving on grass....well yeah.
Did you watch Malaysia? Massa set out to prove rFactors snap oversteer is real.

LOL! I like that xaotik.

Reading all this I run a real low FOV. It is hard to tell whats going on around you, but I am a casual player...so I usually just go for some laps around the race track rather then a full on race. My ping usually keeps me from being on a server with too many others also.

I have it at about 60 something and I think Bobs calculator program said I should go even lower! I usually try and keep it so I can at least see my mirrors, but 80-90 just looks weird.

People tend to point out reposts and what not because its almost an internet joke at this point.

Its a prime example of taking the internet to seriously. I'm not saying its proper to disregard everyone feelings on the internet, but seriously:
" I'm not the biggest poster in this forum, but I am simply afraid......
If u post a thread that already been asked about you get pwn so bad."

You would not post because your afraid of getting "pwnt" so bad? What is the worst they can do to you? What weight do any of their criticism have being that they do not even know you? How could you take that to heart?

This has to be one of the nicer forums Ive seen. Most you will get is the endless train of "this is a repost" and even then...So? Is it unessisary? yeah a little but it entertains us. What harm comes from a repost? We know that, we don't care its a little joke.

Making a repost, or asking a common question is such an insignificant mistake, how could you place any more importance on the criticisms for it.

So they tell you to search, oh well shoulda done that, I will next time... and move right along.

Ive seen him live at Longbeach gran prix a few times and was always impressed I'll be rooting for him this season. I don't know that he will get too close to a podium, but he is a good diver and I was impressed with how will he held off Alonso, Would be cool to See him do well this season.

Quote from AlienT. :Jarmenia,

Just go online and do not worry about causing accidents, the very fact you are concerned about this shows that you are a thoughtfull driver. Just pick low populated server to begin with and let people know you are new to online. You will never be branded a wrecker unless you are intentionally wrecking people.

Get online! it's were the fun is

Another option is to try a drift server.

People on drift servers typically don't seem to mind/notice if your grip racing. They also wreck constantly, and can just pick up where they left off...So they tend to worry less about a wreck. You will also get some good practice avoiding OTHER peoples wrecks.

Or join an empty server. I find some one else usually joins up after a bit, and if its just the two of you messing around...and the guy knows your new they won't mind and will likely offer help.

The AI can will let you practice driving around other cars...but if they are on your tail they will run you off the road every time.

Quote from SamH :Have they considered losing some fat off those things?? Are they a bit backward in that championship?? If brake fade really is a genuine issue in V8 supercar, then okay.. but it really ISN'T supposed to be an issue these days. There's got to be something wrong with the make-up of that series, surely? Not being funny or anything, but have they tried alternatives to wrought iron chassis?

[ed] posted primarily in jest.. I've enjoyed the V8s when I've seen them screened over here.

Its also a complaint in rally racing.

Ive heard modern F1 drivers complain of "long pedals" too. I don't think its as non existent as you make it sound.

Sure we have the technology...but race cars aren't built above and beyond what they have to be. Expense, complexity and weight have to be taken into consideration so not every race car is strapped with all the brake cooling possible.

You may not see people flying down runoffs with no brakes...but braking performance is effected through a race, The drivers just have to compensate. And Ive still seen plenty of races where one team or another is complaining about brake temps.

Its close...

But if you have never driven a car, and hop in after playing years of LFS I think you still have no experience driving.

You WILL be a leg up...Having studied and drilled on the stuff like what a racing line is, balancing the car, ect...and you do get to practice things and see a good enough approximation of the consequences of your actions behind the wheel...But I think with no real life experiance behind the wheel its gonna take more then a couple races to get up to you speed in the game.

You could probably pick up and be driving fast enough to not draw attention in a couple races but you wont be winning for a long while.

I think once you have done it a bit in real life, you can more easily equate one to the other. With experience in both you can more easily anticipate the differences with out even noticing.

I think smooth shifting especially down shifting is more demanding in real life, or at least more noticeably affects the car (at least with my car).
More finesse with the clutch is required in real life, and if you have never actually driven stick before thats still going to take you a while to pick up, especially to pick up to the point where you can race quickly.

I've also heard that at least the DFP has a special mode for handicap people where if the pedals are not connected the paddles are assigned an axis and can be used as gas/brake.

Never actually tried it though.

Quote from Stang70Fastback :Are you kidding? I overclocked my hard-drive to 42,000 RPM and it practically doubled my framerate!!!

Just because its irrelevant in LFS doesn't mean its a bad thing to list.

Games with significant load times will depend on hard drive as well as ones that have to write/read disk during play.

A sound card that pulls its own weight so to speak can help in other games as well. In BF2 when I got my new soundcard I went from medium settings to ultra high(only talking about the sound settings here), and saw a noticeable increase in frame rate because it can help share the load.

your right on the mouse though, but its at least nice seeing someone provide detail when asking for tech help, don't discourage him

The game is DX7 or 8...it doesn't take much to max it out, I think looking really good is more of an artistic touch with your nVidia control panel.

People spend so much time trying to prove or disprove these racing sims are realistic based on assumptions of assumptions.

It so strange, people want to tell if a game is realistic so they compair it to some other game, or what inputs can be used.

A steering wheel in most cases is simply moving your rack back and forth, why couldn't you move anything back and forth to represent that? it may be strange and take getting used to...but that doesn't make a game unrealistic...Hell some monster trucks have their rear steering operated by levers...

Has no one driven a car before? does it feel like that? You don't have to own a F1 car, or have sponsors to go racing. Find your local club(just because they don't advertise in the sunday paper doesn't mean its not there) and go auto cross. Does the game feel like that?

I will say LFS cars feel the most like my car (race springs, upgraded shocks, HLSD, sways, ect...), and that rFactor feels NOTHING like my car.

Ive never driven high down force open wheel car but I think rFactor does a better job of relating loss of grip/down force with higher slip angles...

I seems really strange that steam would delete LFS with it....especially since LFS doesn't really seem to register itself on your system at all (I.E. no references to it outside the LFS folder)

outside of this one strange event I LOVE steam. No need to worry about game disks or registration codes. Even if my hard drive crashes I can just d/l steam, type in my password and download my games...no losing or scratching anything and I get really good transfer speeds. I also install my games on as many computers as I want and don't need any disks in my computer to play.

Patch Y inspired me to break my old driving force (not driving force pro) open with a pry bar and move the chip into its pedals so I have a wheelless pedal set to use with my DFP.

So no, no more auto clutch

yup, set your wheel to match the game 720 is honestly better anyways 900 is too much.

In RL like they said you need to match the RPMs pretty close, and if you let the clutch out fast with out doing so you can feel it pretty good.

The game is pretty forgiving though, Id imagine part of it being me not being fast enough for it to be critical but as long as you just give the throttle a good tap your usually fine.

Quote from Misko :Yes, deffinitely new Blackwood is much better in that middle sector, closer to the original one in tightness and best ever in runoffs. Previous S2 one was too fast and too much runoff areas had to be used to be fast which was not obvious to anyone that tries it the first time. It was especially evident when we put LFS in Belgrade Motorshow, and we saw how many people drive BL1 XFG. Even Miloš Pavlović, Formula Renault driver, had troubles with that middle section, of course never even thinking to drive on green stuff. (and he was by 1s fastest among first timers )

I even heard comments from people watching our online races in Blackwood how we "lack racing culture" because we drove far out of white lines.

I wish Blackwood is even slower in the final section, there's still too much runoffs, specially on entry to final corner which we take wide on tarmac off the curb completely. It's not intuitive and it doesn't look nice either.

I wanted to upload a great S1 racing video for comparison (looked and sounded so amazingly realistic. Some of you probably have it, it's called something like "HaRDCoRe - Last S1 Movie" and it was on LFS Movies Pit).... but it would take way too long, and you can find yourself anyway how old Blackwood looked like.

lol a buddy of mine when watching me run it for the first time was like "Hey your cheating!"...I could only say "You kinda have to..."

I think its nicer now that the you don't have the huge strip to use on the out side of the race track....You can't complain that people are getting pushed off track because no one will relent, that is racing.

At the same time I don't think its that unrealistic for us to use these portions of the track when they are there...Ive seen F1 drivers practically on the other side of the rumble strip if there is tarmac there, can't blame a racer for being creative and using the whole road...thats what it is about. Its like race teams using things that aren't expressly forbidden (yet ) Its the nature of racing.

Doesn't bother me that they keep it, but I wouldn't mind and would understand if they removed it.

I for one can't come close to driving like that...I can barely drive down the middle of the road in 3rd person view let alone try and race a proper line.

Quote from ghost racer :You can only do one LFS S2 sign in each month.

Naw, it works on unlock tickets...
You may want to review the purchase agreement that explains it, but its something along the lines of you get 2 unlock tickets per week with a max of 2 (you can unlock twice in a week)

You can have it installed an playable on two computers at the same time (I know this for a fact, I'm doing it now) but your account can only be log in on one computer at a time.

when you install it on a new computer it just uses one of the installs, but it doesn't affect other computers you already have it installed on.

I'm not sure however if that mean you could technically install it on a 3rd and 4th after a week.

Quote from orange_boy_uk :Wow ure big? How is that crying? only because he doesn't want to use a wheel, i don't.. does that make me a baby or wanna cry? I use mouse and keyboard. I too hate the new clutch thing and also the car set problem. Plus that new 1.2 bmw F1 car is rubbish. I mean why do we need more F1 cars and why for demo's.
I will never use a wheel as i choose to use mouse and keyboard, it's like me using mouse over controller for first person shooters, i prefer to use mouse.

While his post was rude I have to say I agree on some level...

No one is saying you can't use what ever controller you want, but its a driving simulator...and driving a F1 car with a keyboard and mouse in real life would probably be trickier then with its steering wheel.

I would completely support your argument if they removed mouse and/or keyboard as an input option, but improving the physics engine to the point where it highlights the inefficiencies of your inputs isn't the games fault...its your controllers.

(not directed at OP, I recognize he isn't complaining)
