Well I guess that might be it...

It happened on the D-R-T server (of which I have no other complaints whatsoever - great folks), but the previous race 'I' caused a DRT member to spin off the track, although I left more than enough space (he was probably surprised by my move and slammed the brakes). Though there were no harsh words, it was obvious he didn't like it.

For single player that may be true (I see a temp.spr), but I can't find a temp.mpr file (nor an *.mpr that's dated yesterday).

Oh well... I have turned on the option to save all multiplayer replays. So if it ever happens again, I'll have the proof and information the developers need.

Quote from tristancliffe :Post the replay, then a) we can see and b) Scawen can fix the bug it there actually is one by interrogating the replay. Never underestimate the power of replays.

I know, but as I said I was so pissed off (was driving a great race) I left the server before thinking about it. Then of course it was too late to save the replay. Dumb, dumb, dumb

I could post this in the bugs section, but without any proof in the form of a replay, I'm afraid Scawen won't be able to do much.

But am I right that's is absolutely not right to get a 45 seconds time penalty in lap 3 of 10?

shim: Time penalties are only given at the end of a race when you might not have enough timle to pit for a penalty. I was in lap 3 of 10 (with the car in first position only about a second in front of me). I really don't understand why I got a time penalty and not a drive through or a stop and go.

Then, after a few laps I suddenly get a stop and go (while driving on the circuit - not pitting). I didn't hit anyone, didn't take shortcuts. Just clean driving (there weren't even other cars near in a few seconds). I guess it was the 45 seconds penalty which wasn't taken up in 3 laps (drive through also turns into a stop and go after 3 laps). But how can I take a time penalty?

Jakg: There was no other car in the pits as far as I recall it. And the AS National pitlane is flat, so no unwanted speedling due to a downhill road or something like that.

But even if I did speed, I should have gotten a drive through. Not a 45 seconds penalty...
What exactly causes a 45 seconds penalty?

I was just racing on a server, AS National, 10 lap race, GTR class cars, mid race pit stop required. Running in second position I came in early in lap 3. My pitlimiter was turned on BEFORE crossing the pitlane and I braked even a bit too hard. I think I crossed the line about 70 km/h. No problem so far. I pit (only picking up a slight bit extra fuel, no new tyres, no repairs) and when I accelerate (staying at 78-79 km/h because of the pit limiter) I suddenly get a 45 seconds penalty. Wtf?

It's not because of pitlane speeding. That would have costed me a drive through or stop and go penalty.

So what might have caused this penalty? What did I do wrong?

Second question is, how do I take this penalty? A few laps later the 45 seconds penalty suddenly turned into a stop and go. I thought the 45 seconds penalty was just a time penalty calculated at the end of your race?

I know I should have saved the replay, but I was a bit frustrated, so I immediatly quit the server...

Quote from AndroidXP :In Paint you cannot even rotate in other than 90° steps

Exactly, so I really don't understand what "sgt.flippy" finds difficult in rotating things in Paint Shop (or any other good graphics application). It's a easier and a lot better than Paint's 90° rotate mode.

Paint may appear easier, but in the long run it becomes a lot more frustrating and slower.

Take for example a stupid diagonal line of about 1 pixel wide. In both Paint and Photoshop this can be done easily. But Paint will give you a jagged line because of the absence of anti-aliasing where Photoshop produces a smooth line.

A few hours later you think; the line would better be about 50 pixels lower. In Photoshop you select the layer the line is on and lower it 50 pixels. In Paint however, the line became one with the background the moment you drew it. If there's a complex pattern (like a photograph or gradient) behind the line, you'll have a hard time removing the line and redrawing it lower. In many cases it will simply be impossible without redoing a lot of work.

And this is just a simple example. Think about more complex situations were you wished you could still grab a part in Paint and edit that. In Photoshop all that is standard behaviour thanks to the layers. Rotating objects, resizing without loss of quality (vector),...

That doesn't mean Paint is useless. In fact, for quick 'n dirty low level bitmap editing I think it's a great program and I still use it quite often. But as soon as you start doing more complex tasks where you may want to change several parts later on in the process or want to have advanced effects (shadows, glows, distortions, bending, resizing, rotating, transparancy,...), programs like Photoshop will prove to be a huge time saver.

I'm talking about Photoshop, but it's similar for PhotoPaint and Paint Shop Pro of course.

It's been mentioned before, but you should really check out Paint .NET. Although far from as advanced as Photoshop, it combines the simple-to-use interface you know from Paint with several badly missing features in Paint. Think about layers, gradients,... And all that for free

Quote from sgt.flippy :I always have a difficulty trying to turn the image.

I don't know about Paint Shop (never used it), but I can't imagine it is more complex than let's say Photshop. But what amazes me is that you seem to think Paint is easy for rotating. Take for example a big stripe on the side of you car at an angle of let's say 15°. That's easy to draw with Paint. Now you want some text in that stripe, of course at the same angle. How will you do that?

The day I first drove the testdemo. Easy to trace back. I just had to look up my registration date on the old RSC forums where this board used to be hosted.

But I've been off the game for a long time. Never played S1 due to lack of time and a broken steering wheel. Last Christmas I got myself a new steering wheel and picked up LFS again.

Because it gets the job done. Not as good as it could be, but more than well enough taking the time you spent on it in account.

If I didn't have the preset scenes, my best shot would have been a screenshot from the CMX viewer. A render looks quite a bit better than the viewer, so I did improve.

Maybe you use 3dsmax for your living, or maybe it's your hobby. I don't know. The point is that some people couldn't care less about 3dsmax, lighting,... but still would like to get great looking renders for their cars. If they really understand nothing of the process, they can ask people like tristan to render their car (I can't remember seeing you offering such a service). If they understand a bit of it, they can use a preset scene and modify it to their needs to the extent of their limited knowledge on the subject (like I did). Is that wrong? I don't think so... Or do you want to say that when you don't want to learn 3dsmax you shouldn't want good looking renders either?

Well, in that case I hope you're an allround DIY man. You want a house, build it yourself because if you can't, you won't get one. You need an application, program it yourself because if you can't, there will be no program.

There's no way one can do everything he would like to do. People have different interests, lack of time, different capabilities,... And you have to respect that because you are just one of these people too.

My latest skin. Basically it's very much like my previous work (based on the same skin). Some may find the car somewhat clean and empty due to the lack of sponsors all over it, but that's just the way I like it. I did experiment a bit with the usual decals (HKS, Recaro, Brembo,...) and adding a car number, but it looked like crap in my opinion.

Still having difficulties with the lighting in 3dsmax/brazil. The sides are somewhat too dark and the top too light (the yellow is a lot darker in reality). I tried lowering the skylight brightness and adding a spotlight on the sides, but that gave even worse results. Tires became grey. By removing the skylight and reflective plane the lighting was quite well with just one spotlight, but due to the absence of the cool highlights (by the reflective plane) it looked like plastic. I did over 50 320x240 (trial user ) renders with different lighting setups, but none were satisfying. Maybe I'll just ask Morrow to do some sweet renders. His scenes have the darkness I like, while still retaining all details and no noise... and those rims, yummie

XCNuse & ORION: I too like dark backgrounds, but you must realize that not everyone is a 3dsmax lighting expert. I'm still far from satisfied with the lighting in my scene (actually I think it sucks), but with over 50 renders of the same scene with different lighting and still not a better result I gave up. I use 3dsmax only for those few Live For Speed car renders. I'm not planning to spend a lot of time in learning the tricks of the trade: I have plenty of other more important things to do.

I just think it's great scenes like Ian.H's ds Autos (which I used) are made available to the public so everyone, not even skilled 3dsmax'ers can get quite well looking results in little time. And true, they don't look as sweet as renders by Morrow for example, but your not gonna tell me Morrow is a 3dsmax newbie

On the other hand I also think it's great people like Morrow, tristan and others are offering their services to everyone wanting a nice looking render.

Spiritik: The blue/white combo is clean, simple, yet effective. However, the bottom side stripe ends a bit awkward at the rear. On the red/black combo the M Power logo is way too large (or placed at the wrong place).

I don't know about the UK, but here in Belgium / The Netherlands you automatically have a copyright on everything you create (literature, art, software,...). You don't need to apply for patents. That's something completely different (and is costly here too). The copyright is yours for whole your life and applies even up to 70 years after your death.

You don't even have to put up a copyright notice on your work, although it's recommended to avoid confusion.

I have quite a few links about this, but all in Dutch. I'll see if I can find excerpts of the law in English.

Personally I think it would be a nice feature to have the area where most skinners put their name, logo, webaddress,... also show up in the LFS garage. Not on the car of course

That way skinners could add PUBLIC USE / NOT FOR PUBLIC USE -like messages to their skins, and people using these skins would immediatly see these messages while browsing through skins in the LFS garage. Most people "stealing" skins don't do it intentionally. They just see there's a bunch of cool skins in the skins_x directory and move them over to their own skins folder. Usually they don't check each skin in a graphics program or previewer, and in the LFS garage you don't get to see the skinner's name, address, copyright notice. If this area would be shown in the LFS garage, even these people would see the NOT FOR PUBLIC USE messages on several skins. Not that this will prevent people from stealing skins, but those who are now unaware of it might stop using it. And for those who don't, there's no more excuse they didn't see it...

danowat: And why should that be so? If I take a picture, I have a copyright on that picture. If I draw a picture, the same goes up. If people view my pictures/drawings on my website, they also download a copy to their harddisk (browser cache - compare it with skins_x). That's ok, nothing illegal. They are allowed to do so for personal use. But it would be wrong for them to use any of my graphics on their own webpage or somewhere else where other people will be able to view it. They should first ask permission.

So if I design a skin, the copyright is also mine. That my skin is also on everyone's computer I raced with doesn't mean I permit them to use it freely. I permit them to view my work, not redistribute it.

People cloning existing skins may be on thin ice since they usually didn't ask the originating racing team (or whoever who did the real car) permission to use their "skin". Of course they still had to do all graphics work by themselves...

Cool, I'm in it several times. You should have cut out the part were I go into the wall (although the crash itself is off screen)

Nice video though, good camera work! But you should work on the deinterlacing.

I do believe we need a better damage model, but I don't think injuries should be part of it. And definitely not a limited field of view. It's already a lot more difficult to see what's going on around you compared to real life. Don't make it even more difficult. Drivers that took damage should take extra care they don't cause more accidents, so don't limit their field of vision.

A crash that would kill you would surely damage the car beyond a drivable state. So what's the point in simulating dying? It's exit race anyways. And smaller crashes that would cause severe injuries that may affect your driving in real life would also damage your car up to a point where driving fast is just impossible and you have a hard time keeping it one the road.

Quote from wheel4hummer :How about a small dialoge would popup asking you if you wanted to kick/ban/spectate the player who hit you? By dialoge I mean it would'nt interfere with the game, just press F1 for kick, F2 for ban, etc.

I don't want a system that makes banning and voting even easier than it already is. Although there are wreckers out there where such a system would be welcome, many people simply abuse the kick/ban system if something happened not to their liking (even if they were wrong themselves).

I just would like to know who hit me. Now I often don't know who bumped me off the road. Similar, when I accidently hit someone, spin off I have to tab through all cars to find that one white car with the black stripe (just an example) to see who that was. If only the name would be displayed of the car you touched, I'd be happy.

Quote from banshee56 :This is available in the "Online Race Results" section on LFS World. You can see the usernames of those with whom you just raced.

I might be a tad blind, but I nowhere see in the "Online Race Results" section what cars hit me and what cars I've hit. And besides, that information is only available on LFS World after the race. I'd like to know it at the moment. Otherwise I can just as well save the replay and watch it.

Maybe you misread my question a bit. I don't mean contact information as in a way to address a user. I mean touching cars with contact. So all I asked was the game to display the name(s) of the drivers my car touched with. I don't need their LFS World profile or a private way of contacting them. The point is that I often don't know who hit me, and I'd like to know that

I've searched through the forum and Suggested Improvements Log but couldn't find something similar, so I'm posting my suggestion in a new thread.

I would find it useful to have the name(s) of the driver(s) you just had contact with shown in the log/history. Sometimes you get bumped, but trying to recover your car you didn't get the chance to see who actually did it. Or otherwise, you hit someone accidently and want to excuse yourself to the other car. But who was it? If the contact was light and without severe impact for both drivers the "Sorry" key is sufficient enough. It doesn't matter to know who the other guy was. A simple sorry will do.

But sometimes you cause a crash where the other driver loses a lot of time or places, or you end up in a crash going off yourselves. In these cases I'd like to excuse myself personally to the other driver or ask for an explanation why the other car hit me. Especially this last case seems useful to me because in close pack racing there are often some over-enthousiastic drivers that force you to go off the track but never apologize.

So all I'd like to see is just the name of the driver you just hit appearing in the log/history.

It may be even useful to have this information shown to all drivers. Especially during starts or t1's crashes are frequently caused by the same drivers. Now you often don't know who actually caused the crash unless you view the replay and this often causes the wrong people accused of being wreckers. For example, someone on my tail brakes to late for t1, smashes into another car which hits me an causes me to hit yet another car (yeah t1's often turn into complete mayhem ). The driver in that car thinks I caused the whole accident and starts a kick vote. If the "contact" information was shown on screen it would be easier for everyone to see which cars made first contact. And while that doesn't necessarely tell which of both was faulty, it gives a good indication if a certain user's name keeps popping up.

A second suggestion I have is the ability to have the tyre temperatures as well as the drivers positions list displayed both at the same time. Now it's either one, but not both. Playing at 1920x1200, with a high FOV I have plenty of room for both (most of the screen is just cockpit without real use), so I'd really love to see an option in the game to have both shown at the same time. I like keeping an eye on my tyre temperatures, but I also like to know who's in front of me or tailing me and at what time.

My first (serious) skinning attempt. I spent quite some time to get the 'finish flag' pattern right on the 3 surfaces (top, left & right). It's of course a fictional skin, hence there's only little advertising over the car. I don't like it when there are tons of sponsors all over the car :P
