Well then maybe you may have to concede that no longer can people make big money in music production. The whole business model needs a re-think.

You also still beleive in 'albums and singles'. If we are to change the business model then even that will need a re-think.

You say "you're still not gaining from it". In the orthodox business model yes, but if you can think (brent cliche alert) outside of the box then profit is still there for bands.

Look at the resturant/cooking industry. You don't the CRS (chef rights society lol) knocking on peoples door everytime they use or share a recipe asking for a fee.

Law is law and piracy is illegal so we mustn't condone illegal behavour, but nor can we ignore the trends that are appearing in the 'music world' that can help us redesign what we do.
Fair point about thinking in terms of albums and singles. The iTunes pay-per-song thing would work too, but then you get into the whole DRM thing. I don't really know enough about iTunes to go into that, I seem to be about the only person in the entire world who has never even touched an iPod

But again, your restaurant example is different. Each chef has a signature dish and they very often don't want people to know their secret ingredient or methods used to cook it. That's not something you can necessarily work out from just buying it, because if you could then you'd be able to do it yourself and theoretically sell it on as your own. I imagine Frenchie LeChefman would be pretty miffed if you stole his trademark dish

But aside from that, as an artist it shouldn't be up to me to think of these things, it should be the record companies! And in case you can't figure it out from that, I have no idea how else to work it. I'm old and set in my ways

Record eveything in Vinyl and it becomes a lot harder for your average Dagenham Dave to turn it into an MP3.

You might end up helping out your local Gramaphone salesman too.
A good alternative to Youtube is We7.

http://www.we7.com

Alot of music there which you can listen to for free and create playlists. The quality is quite good and the load times are non-existant. The option to buy from iTunes and buy off their website is there.

There's no video but whenever I listen to music on Youtube it's always on a hidden tab in firefox anyway.
Oh noes instead of legally listening to music on Youtube I will have to download illegal torrents and other P2P files. What a disapointment.

I know you're being kinda sarcastic, but you make a very valid point about the net effect of the PRS's actions. Music is a core function of society. It's a significant form of social interaction and it's always been an essential form of communication. You'll never stop people talking to each other or sharing their feelings. The best you can hope for is to be a part of the solution rather than, as PRS is showing itself to be, a part of the problem.
It's just that music, an art form, has been capitilzed by money hungry greedy bastards.
Whole europa is blocked now. Youtube desided that whole Europa should suffer, so here in Norway and rest of "northen" we have the same situations as you in UK..

There's also Spotify, which has had a mini-purge but that doesn't mean it is devoid of good stuff. Unless the PRS cartel attacks that one ...
Yep seems to have kicked in already. No problems running through Hotspot Shield though.

Unfortunatly true.

I think that Youtubes userbase will either go elsewhere or yeah, because it's just a joke to be honest..

I believe Youtube will lose more money in the long run, but whatever. They don't care about us (the users)

So **** them. I'll continue to rip music from Youtube, all I need is the URL to the page. I'll do it more often now, just to piss them off even more.
