I don't seem to be into heavy modifying no more, yeah I may do it one day but thats part of growing up and doing stupid things lol.
What car would you suggest that would be cheap to insure? I have heard Nova's can be a good laugh with the right suspension on and a little modifying like the manifold. The only thing is, there pointed towards boy racers so much it puts me off getting one lol.
I didn't. It was £1k with a provisional, and then when I passed they wanted an extra £1k - My Dad paid both.
It's £1k next year which I can just about afford to do.
Whats wrong with Protons? (serious question!)
They are based of old Mitsubishi's (mine is an early lancer) which means they are a bit thirsty and unrefined, but not that bad. Compared to my friends cars mine (306 and a Fiesta) mine is the nicest one to drive and my friends all think the same. My car is stupidly designed though - having to take the door cards out to get to speakers is perhaps the worst bit.
I would look out for a Corsa B sport, as this model came with the 1.4 16 valve engine, plus as they are still only a relitively small engined car, the insurance isnt too bad.
A friend of mine had one and it was fairly quick as standard, and after he had fitted a performance exhaust system and an induction kit it would leave most other cars of its size for dead, Fiesta XR2's, saxo's, 106's, Nova's, bye bye!
I also distinctly remember a guy who ended up selling his chavved up nova 1.6 GSi out of shame because my mate beat him in a standard looking 1.4 corsa!
The only thing is that they do seem to be getting rarer now.
I wouldn't mind a stripped out Corsa B. Pointless even doing subtle mods to the exterior on your first car. Your a most likely to at least bump it into something, you make your first mistakes in the car.
A Corsa 1.4 16V on the insurance I think will nearly be £1,800 a year.
Im just wondering, have you tried that adrian flux insurance company i mentioned earlier in the thread, as from everyone else i tried, they were waaaaay cheaper!
All these car threads and talk about insurance and your weak little cars are really starting to make me feel sorry for you all.
With the cars you guys are talking about, you wouldn't have to worry about being laughed off the road over here. You'd be run off the road far sooner while you struggle to hold half the speed limit up the hills and everyone else runs you over at 70 mph.
It's stupid in America as if I remember correctly, it's your choice whether you have insurance or not.
One good example with how bad it is in America, the kid who got a M5 for his first car, took it to a runway and killed himself and 4 others I think it was.
I hate that fact that we have to start off in crappy cars but it helps us to learn car control and not step into something that has a lot of power and kill ourselves.
Guys:
Stripped out Corsa B or stripped out Nova or stripped out 205?
I am thinking of any of the cars I get, getting a full exhaust system fitted, including Manifold. What is a derestricted Manifold?
focus 1.4 is truly terrible, but check for a bog standard zetec focus 1.6. insurance is well cheaper than a 1.2 fiesta focus's make brilliant cars. also, a bog standard astra 1.6 is what ive got, 18 with a fault claim and im paying a grand FC. both are insurance group 4.
A good part of working out insurance is how much the particular car has been crashed, so for example clios, saxos and the like have cost the insurance company a fair whack, whereas focuss and astras generally havent as much, so are cheaper to insure. my astra was well cheaper to insure than some hairdryer.
Mine is a 2003/53 astra club 1.6 which i picked up for a shade over 2 grand, and is a great example. Not particularly quick or good handling, but realistically nothing really is at your age/budget.
a 1.4 Fiesta will do about a 110mph, thing is though is may not be fast in a straight line, it will piss all over a American car in the corners as their cars can't do corners well lol.
